Jatkoin junalta Weimarin keskustaan bussilla. Kiersin keskustassa kävellen. Tarkeni t-paidassa. En käynyt museoissa. Pikkukujalta löytyi ravintola jossa söin lounaan, kun salaattipöytä sisältyi hintaan. Otin toisessa paikassa kahvin ja pullaa terassilla. Ohi meni ryhmä opiskelijoita, joilla oli erikoista ohjelmaa. He muodostivat kuvioita. Myöhemmin ... read more

Wednesday 1 July 2015 After a peaceful night and a rare hotel breakfast we packed the car and took the road to Buchenwald. What an enjoyable drive through thick forest. The road in takes several forms, cobbles, concrete and smooth hot-mix asphalt. What a contrast. The concrete had been laid by the inmates of Buchenwald and was nicknamed "Blood Road". We wondered about the cobbles. It took us back four years to a time when we drove on a Polish cobbled highway. On reaching the camp we noticed most of the buildings have long since disappeared. Standing there looking over the site we had mixed feelings. If a holiday camp had been built on the sight it would have been perfect, such were the views across the open countryside. This camp was a work camp, strange ... read more

Tuesday 30 June 2015 What a great stay in Dresden. Great hotel, great weather and great sights. What more could we want. But today we have to move on. This time we have a 2 o'clock appointment in Weimar with the sister-in-law of our daughter. Our GPS friend says we'll get there in plenty of time so we will have time for a coffee break and lunch. After a quick stop at a Netto supermarket for some fresh bread rolls and drinks we head off for another fast and furious drive. We drive at a sedate pace and our arrival time doesn't alter too much. At a McCafe near Munich we received two €1 coffee vouchers so why not use them. "Sorry sir these are not for this region". Oh well, perhaps we might need them ... read more

So waking up early this morning I figured I would check out Buchenwald, it is only 8 Km from the ccentral station. There was an hourly bus that ran there so if you were late by 5 minutes you had to wait an extra hour. But arriving to the camp you go into the information center and they send you first to a short 30 minute movie showing hourly. It was very interesting and my school actually a few months ago had a survivor from Buchenwald come speak, he was a Polish Jew sent to multiple work camps and survived the death marches too. What surprised me about Buchenwald was how isolated it was, the Nazis chose this location because of that reason and to keep things away from the public. The camp started small but ... read more

It seemes everytime I get oriented with a city I have to leave, Dresden was fun but off from the ruins of the 3rd Reich to the start of democracy of the short lived Weimar Republic. The city is very quaint and quite fun to travel, my hostel is near the Goethe Platz and everything is right by me which is nice! I find myself getting lost in the downtown area here, though small the streets are windey and around each corner seems to be a small market square, beer garden, statuee or museum. My goal was to get acquainted to the city, see Goethes and Schillers house and watch Germany move on in the world cup. I ended up watching the world cup at a bier garden with an Irish lady who was also a ... read more

After visiting Erfurt, we made a quick stop in Weimar on the way to Dessau. Weimar was the former intellectual center of Germany, the home of many famous German writers, philosophers, etc. Dessau, in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, is the home of the Bauhaus architecture style and a city that clearly exemplifies its (grubby) East German past.... read more

A nice straightforward drive today and a lovely suprise when we entered the hotel - it was fantastic. The cheapest so far but with a swimming pool and sauna. The perfect relaxation after quite a lot of driving. The hotel was just off the motorway so easy to find in a nice rural setting and it also had bikes to hire for free so me and Sam went for a spin this evening but didn't quite make it into the town centre. Another gorgeous sunny day but at some point during the night we had a huge downpour. Feeling like we have made good progress and had a buzz when we saw signs for Berlin.... Lovely to know we will be there tomorrow and will be meeting Paul at the airport. ... read more

Buchenwald concentration camp near the town of Weimar. Being the 3rd largest camp under the 3rd Reich it was set up in 1938 to deal with the problems of non workers and other dissedents who did not want to be part of the new Germany. Over 56,000 died there from 1938 to 1945 with adults and children being sent there from all over Europe. Gypsies, homosexuals, handicapped, Jews, Jehovah Witnesesses, and political dissedents were among the people from 57 nations who were starved, beaten, tortured, medically experiementated on, forced into work parties and cremated in this place. It is a large site with many of the exisiting buildings still remaining. An audio guide is a must and it explains all the details sensitvely and takes you from point to point. It is not gruesome or depressing ... read more
