A Note from Strasbourg and Errands in Frankfurt French Hospitality After writing our final blog entry from Strasbourg we headed out to dinner. A lady who worked in our hotel suggested a restaurant a little off the beaten path called Le Cloud. While very close to our hotel (about a ten minute walk) it was on a side street we never would have found on our own. When we arrived at the restaurant it was pretty booked up with the exception of a long table in the middle of the room which was open to walk-ins. As it was pretty early there was no one at the table yet so we were seated one chair in from the end of the table, sitting opposite each other. As more people showed up they were seated next ... read more

The soft lights from the corners of the plane seep softly into my vision and I awake to the quiet rustlings of attendants preparing breakfast while others sit quietly letting the rest of us move about dreamland. Consumed by a dark tunnel, the sun has yet to bare its face to this side of the ocean as the pilot pushes full speed ahead to keep up with the schedule. It has been a comfortable night, my mind is still foggy but I have had time to rest enough to make sense of my surroundings, although thoughts of reading have long been given up over to the exhaustion of hopping planes and time zones. It was by pure accident I ended up in this section of the plane, a smile from an attendee on the east coast ... read more

Cheri says to me "let's go shopping", groan says I. "There's wine..." says she and I was sold. We have been told that the Christmas markets in Frankfurt are something to behold. So we went with every intention of beholding. However, really the story starts a little earlier, around about the time that we were selecting our method of arrival and subsequantly learnt a very very important lesson. We could either get there using a standard airline or using a budget airline. We're fairly poor travellers, what do you think we chose? Perhaps though it is a false saving. The problem with a budget airline is that they tend to fly out of airports which are not on the beaten track. Heck, they don't even have an unbeaten track sometimes, just a sort of parting in ... read more

Frankfurt is probably one of the most boring cities I have ever been to. It is the financial capital of Germany, and it did not help that we went on a Sunday because (it would appear that) most people leave the city on weekends. The hotel I booked online ended up being in the Red Light District, one of the main streets near the main train station that was littered with strip clubs, sex shops, peep shows, etc. That could explain why it was so cheap. The final day of our stay in Frankfurt we did manage to find a more tourist-friendly area with lots of holiday shops and vendors, some old architecture, street performers, etc. ... read more

From Madrid to Frankfurt Our Final Day in Madrid Our last day in Madrid did not start out so great! I woke up with a minor case of vertigo. The world would spin every time I moved at all, which was more than a little disconcerting. Thanks to Kel’s quick internet skills she was able to put me on the mend by getting me on some Benadryl. Within an hour I was back to normal. We sent the day walking around town since the weather was good and the sun was out. After walking through the streets for about an hour we found our way back to Retiro Park and found a nice sunny spot to sit in the sun. We were treated to one of the funnier street performers I’ve ever seen. This guy ... read more

My last visit to Germany was a lot of fun, but ridiculously short as I only went there for 22hours, so as soon as I got back to London I booked another flight for the 1st weekend available, which happened to be Maggie's bday...perfect timing! Anyways...went there last Thursday and was gonna hang out in Frankfut for a bit before going to good old Alsbach to meet the girls and go to the pub, but my flight was completely delayed!! It wasn't very nice to hear the lady saying our flight was gonna be at least 2 hours delayed because of a problem with the plane...ended up it was 3:15hr delayed, so I didn't get into the centre of Frankfurt til 7 or something... so I took myself to dinner at the aussie bar (I ... read more

This morning we had a delicious, leisurely breakfast at the hotel (it was a marvelous buffet including my favorite, smoked salmon), then we headed out to the banking district to look at Frankfurt from the top of Main Tower. The weather cooperated, and we had fun showing June Bug the train station, river, and Romerburg. Afterwards, we decided to walk back to the Christmas Market, which was slightly less crowded than the night before, and we did some fabulous gift shopping and ridiculous Santa hat purchasing. We went back to the hotel for nap time followed by dinner and a swim in the pool. Tomorrow we get up bright and early to fly to Chicago, and then Memphis. Frankfurt is known for its apfelwein (apple wine), and I had a chance to try some today. It ... read more

Today we got up early, ate breakfast, finalized our packing, and set out for Frankfurt. At 9:00 we called a taxi to take us to the bus station. We weren’t expecting the taxi to show up so soon. (I guess they don’t get much business at 9:00 a.m. on Saturdays.) The taxi driver got us and our luggage to the bus stop by 9:05 which meant we had a long, cold wait until the bus arrived at 9:59. The two-day Christmas market in Baumholder meant that main street and the regular bus stop were closed to traffic, so we were at a bus stop with no benches and no protection from the elements. It rained a little, but not much. It was, however, very cold. We got on the bus and took a 35-minute ride to ... read more

Geo: 50.0442, 8.40606Today being a Monday in Europe meant that all museums are closed. So I had a sleep in and walked towards the zoo- the only attraction open on a Monday. Decided to go to the zoo, as I haven't been to one for a long time. Soon changed my mind about the zoo, today's weather was terrible- windy and rainy, so instead I spent some time writing emails and the rest of the day shopping and tasting the Christmas market foods. That evening I spent a bit of time trying to fit my new clothes in my backpack!... read more
