It was sad to say "Auf Wiedersehen" to Hamburg and Fanny and Kolja, but off to Berlin. The ride was short and fast with and ICE train, hour and a half. The train was surprisingly full. The trainstation here is also amazing so big! After confusion of trying to get to the hostel it turned out the stop I needed was around the corner from the stop I was at. My goal for today was to see the Public Viewing in Berlin and I accomplished that! Besides being frisked twice to get in it was really fun, there were around 500,000 people I heard, I got to Berlin, to hostel then left right away to public viewing, I got there 2 hrs early and it paid off! I got right up close to the front, about ... read more

After meeting a girl from Mexico that resides in the same hostel as I, she and a couple more people from my hostel decided that it would be better if we explored the vast city to see what there was of interest to us. Although we could’ve easily booked a guided tour, we thought it would be more enjoyable if we got lost in between the neighborhood streets of Berlin. After continuos walking and using the U-Bahn, we came across the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, which is located on Cora-Berliner-Strabe, Just a couple minutes away from the Brandenburg Gate.as we were walking towards the memorial it seemed as if the floor was even and every gray concrete slab was the same height. It was to everyone surprise that when we walked in between ... read more

Ah, I love this song, “Art School Girlfriend” by Stone Temple Pilots. Perhaps it also helped that I was hanging out with a Scottish bloke who is the number 1 Pearl Jam fan. He literally feels god for days after he goes to a concert. You know, Pearl Jam, STP, they are the same genre. Ok, so I am not a girlfriend or going to art school but this tour evoked this song in my head (Kopf). Alternative tours alternative art tour was the company and name of the tour. The tour guide is a street artist himself and seemed quite knowledgeable and nice, both good qualities in a tour guide. We started outside of the infamous Starbucks at Alexanderplatz. We rode to the art district, Kreuzberg. Our Kiwi guide taught up about how in Germany ... read more

Ok, so picking up where I left off, Malmo was nice though it took us a while to find a spot to camp and our spot didn't compare to any of our previous beautiful locations. It was about 30-40mins walk to get back to the station in the morning, so we really felt the packs on our backs! The train strike in Sweden was still going on (naturally it finished the day after we did the route!) so it was a bus over to Copenhagen then a train to hamburg (of course this train had to stop and get extremely overcrowded due to another train breaking down and us taking on its passengers) and finally onto the train to berlin. Due to the delays on the trains we arrived in the middle of the night and ... read more

Berlin has been quite beautiful so far. The weather reminds me of San Francisco, overcast with a breeze. So far I have been enjoying the amount of graffiti art that is on the walls. The past several days I have enjoyed this pub called Parkplatz. The building is recycled from old big rig shipment containers. They used the outside of their walls for artist to come and add on their own flair. It’s one of my favorite places right now to hangout and drink cider and enjoy the company of the local people. At night time they create their own food truck festival and the locals come and enjoy watching fussball on the huge television that they have. I am also getting the hang of the walking terrain, and the bike lanes that are on the ... read more

Free walking tour of Historic Berlin: The Mitte Included Checkpoint Charlie, The berlin Wall, The Holocaust Memorial and much more. There is so much to do here in Berlin it is a challenge to figure out what to do. This is definitely a tourist city and there are tours of practically everything that charge about 15 Euros each. Taking a tour of everything can break the bank in a heartbeat and… from speaking with other people it seems unnecessary. At the hostel I am at, St. Christopher’s Inn, they have a free walking tour of the historic part of berlin on a daily basis. Before getting too excited, this is put on by a big company in Berlin in order to get you to sign up for their other tours. It’s ok…free is free! The tour ... read more

Instead of visiting the popular historical sites that Berlin has to offer, I decided to walk around the city and see what I could find. Ultimately I ended up in Charlottenburg in one of the most beautiful gardens I have ever seen, it is called Schlossgarten Charlottenburg, with its nicely decorated trees and greenery made it a very peaceful and scenic walk. It had an amazing landscape; little streams of water covered with green algae made it seem as if it was a never ending green road. Parks in the U.S are nothing compared to these.. In the U.S almost every park has a baseball field and a jungle gym for kids to play, where as here in Germany, parks are often referred to as Gartens and they have a more "nature-like" feeling. Also, people ... read more

One of the many great things about Berlin is the Fernsehterm also known as the TV Tower. It’s among the world’s greatest towers including the Eiffel, Cairo Tower, and of course the Space needle in Seattle-holla. A fact that I found interesting was that , it was built by the GDR to make the people in the west jealous so shout out GDR. The GDR was not all bad which is the topic of another blog. Everywhere you go in Berlin, you can see the TV tower which is quite comforting and also amazing considering how big Berlin is. I decided to treat myself to going up into this 147 floors icon. It is well worth the 12$. You have a panoramic 360 degree view of Berlin as far as the eye can see. You can ... read more

Upon arrival in Berlin I stayed at St. Christopher's Inn Hostel. This hostel is quite a happening place and a wonderful way to meet fellow travelers here in Germany. The Hostel itself is clean. I stayed in a 6 bed all female dorm. Really it is like a mini apartment- there are two bedrooms, one has the 6-bed dorm and the other a 2-bed dorm, a kitchen fully stocked with dishes and pots and pans, and a bathroom with shower. It is pretty plush really. Unfortunately the beds are not very comfortable-but with jet lag that really isn't an issue because I could sleep almost anywhere. The first few days my schedule was way off! This allowed for some very early mornings where I was able to explore Alexanderplatz- a very happening center for shopping tourists ... read more

It’s un debatable that Berlin is the most cosmopolitan city in Germany. Just ask a Berliner when you are out and about. If you want to experience a more traditional place then you can take a day or weekend trip to Leipzig. I took an early am bus to Leipzig for about 7 Euro’s and a 2.5 hour journey. It is quite beautiful and easy to get around on the trams and/or bus. My personal favorite part was the Coffe Baum-the oldest coffee house in Germany. It is a 4-story coffee shop and museum. The coffee was great and they had a wide variety of delicious looking desserts. Plus….the history…..oldest coffee house in Germany. There are a lot of other historical places like Bach’s grave, the world famous St. Thomas Choir that performs in the same ... read more
