Today, we said goodbye not only to Ulf, Andrea and Lars, but also to Barbara, Laura and Joe, who will be flying to Bristol tomorrow, and starting their British tour off in Bath. But, first Döner! We got up much earlier this morning, showered, finished our last minute packing, ate Früstück (breakfast) together one last time, and headed to the bus stop for the trip to the Hauptbahnhof to catch our train. Our train didn't leave until 13:16, so we had planned to get to the station and then find a nearby Döner, because I still had not had not had any good Döner. As expected, it was quite tasty, and when we were done, our server dude offered us Turkish tea, which was very strong, but with enough Zucker, was also very tasty. Finally, it ... read more

After settling into our hotel and watching a bit of Le Tour, we decided we needed 1) some Eis, and 2) to see some things since it was still early and light out and we were restless. So, we set out for Kant Eiscafé, which was not too far from our Pension, and looked interesting on the walk from the S-bahn station to the hotel. On the way there, I joked with Cheryl that I was sure it was going to end up terrible, and that she'd be able to blame me. (In case you missed it, this is foreshadowing). We took a couple of seats on the sidewalk, and proceeded to wait. We had plenty to talk about, but it soon became clear that nobody was going to come ask us if we wanted anything, ... read more

An alarm woke us for the second day running although this one we'd set ourselves. We packed our now significantly heavier bags with all our Monty Python merch, walked to Bethnal Green Station and bought tickets to Gatwick. We had a small walk of a few blocks to transfer to the right line in London central but made it to the airport with what we thought was plenty of time to spare, only to be caught in a huge check in queue at Easy Jet. We made our flight but it was a little too close for comfort. Nik and Emil greeted us in Berlin where they were dropping the rental car off and we caught a cab into the city where we checked in to the Hollywood Media Hotel - our home for two of ... read more

Elven Spree renner gjennom Berlin. ... read more

There’s nothing like a day where American culture and German culture blend together. Once a week about 15 German’s and 1 American get together and play basketball. I look forward to this one day because it reminds me of home. The Germans’ play a little bit different, similar to the Spurs. The like to slow the ball down and play a half court game. I on the other hand, like to play a game a little bit more fast pace and full court. It was something they weren’t use to and it was coming from a women on the court. That part was the best. So far I’m undefeated on the court and to come up with different strategies to beat my team. It’s not going to work. During the basketball game traditions are slightly different. ... read more

Maybe you recall that a little more than three months ago I submitted my PhD manuscript. For becoming Dr Katha, however, there were two more steps to be taken: defending my PhD and publishing the manuscript. My defence was on the 27th of June in Berlin. You might also recall that I am based in Singapore at the moment, so there was some planning involved for me to make sure everything would work out fine. I left for Germany in the early morning of the 25th and arrived in Hamburg on the afternoon of that day. A wonderful surprise was awaiting me at the airport: my colleagues Anja and Richard were there to welcome me and had brought a sunflower for me – one of my favourite flowers! It was great to see them and of ... read more

Berlin was such a fun city, today my goal was to cover 2000 years of German history at the German History Museum and I did. It was simply fascinating all the artifacts they had there. So far, this had been my favourite museum, really big as well. There was even a wall of Pickelhauben! Germany verse Algeria was intense, no scores till over 90 minutes into the game, it was rediculous when the Germans scored that first goal even with the on and off rain. I was surprised with all the police at the event that this man, who dressed up like Hitler (picture attached) ran around with guys and a camera arresting fans for not wearing German jersies. It was funny, they took the fan of the match, who had to compete for the role ... read more

Today I got to wake up nice and early and check out the Reichstag, really cool inside, an elevator takes you right up and there is even a cafe, the cool thing was going up the dome and you can see right into the parliment when they are in session. I decided to also check out Check Point Charlie today and it was also amazing, an older woman walking by stopped and told me her story about the wall, it turns out her aparment was in East Berlin and her window opened to West Berlin and she talked about how the Russians blocked off her window. It was a really interesting museum, very long, it turns out a lot of these places do not allow photography sadly, I did not realize that until halfway through haha. ... read more

Today I had more time to breath and see the city. I spent most of my day in the large city park, this city has such history its amazing, I got a closer look at the Soviet Memorial to fallen soldiers, it was interesting to see, they had two tanks and two cannons! Sadly, reservations are needed to go in the Reichstag, but I got some made for tomorrow luckily! I figured I would check out the "underground" of Berlin too, it takes you into bunkers and air raid shelters from WW2. I can say too, the scariest thing that I have done on this trip is to go up the Siegeseele, it is rediculously high. What is odd, is the effect the war had on Germany today, therer are still bullet holes littering monuments and ... read more

So, I was riding the subway, U Bahn more accurately, home from somewhere with Jimmy the Aussie and we strike up a conversation with a true Berliner on the train. He tells me that next weekend is a music festival called Fete de la Musique. He goes on to say that Fete de la Musique has klein and gross venues all over the city with every type of music imaginable. Cool I think, something to do next weekend. Well, the next day I ride the s Bahn with Billy Goodman and his 1964 guitar to Spandea in the rain. He plays for the first time in his life on the train and he is quite good, a sort of blue grass sound. All the people on the train clap. Of course, I love carrying the guitar ... read more
