Two days in Berlin - too little but it was all we could take off from work this time Leonard Cohen once wrote the lines "First we take Manhattan then we take Berlin". We took his lyrics literally and, having visited Manhattan earlier this year, we headed off to Berlin for a weekend. We have been to Berlin before, five years ago, and that was not the first visit to Berlin for neither of us. Considering how much we like Berlin and how easy it is for us to go there it is surprising how rarely we visit the German capital. We only had two days to spend in Berlin this time so with limited time on our hands we could only squeeze in a limited amount of sightseeing. First we went to Bernauer Strasse to ... read more

Once off the bus, finally in Berlin, all we wanted to do was get to our hotel. So we jumped in a cab (instead of taking the train) and were there in a few short minutes. Had dinner at a nearby Italian restaurant and were both in bed pretty early - exhausted after our crazy day of lost adventure!! Tried to beat the breakfast crowds, but so was everyone else it seemed - a packed house!! Got ourselves a good feed though, so we were ready to seize the day. Lucked out again with the weather - sunny and 23!! Our friends in Berlin (Elizabeth and Trevor) recommended we hire a couple of bikes to get around and see the sights. This was a particularly attractive option, given that one of the local metro train companies ... read more

To get to Berlin we trained up to Warsaw and spent the night there in a Soviet-built apartment building which had been converted into a half-assed hotel. The reception area consisted of a small room holding two conference tables, two uniformed women and a large key/ message box leaning against a wall. It was cold that night and we had no Gazprom heat so we hunkered under the covers and watched episodes of NYPD Blue on the laptop. The 'Start Aramis Hotel'. $60 a night. Don't miss it if you find yourself in Warsaw. The next morning we high-tailed it back to the train station for our ride to Berlin. We killed a couple of hours at MacDonald's sipping coffee and bandwidth. It was a crisp, cold, sunny Polish morning. A Communist monolith of a building ... read more

Berlin capital of Germany 17 to 19 September 2014 We arrived in Berlin at about 11.00am booking into the City Camping Platz which is about 10 kms from the centre of the city. We caught up with emails etc and then caught the bus then metro into the city. This all took about 40 minutes. We were really looking forward to visiting Berlin again as it was pouring with rain almost constantly when we were here in May last year. Today was absolutely magnificent with not a cloud in the sky. We had remember the Metro system but once that was done, we got in the mode again. It was made more simple by buying a 24 hour bus/metro ticket as we caught a few metros because it is such a big city. The sights were ... read more

Esimerkiksi lähellä oleva suuri ruokakauppa on auki yötä päivää maanantaiaamusta klo 7 lauantai-iltaan klo 23.30. Mutta sunnuntain se on suljettuna. Kävin katsomassa Leviksen kauppaa Kudammilla, mutta jatkoin Jukan suosittelemalle kävelykadulle Wilmersdorfer Strasse. Ensimmäisessä kaupassa sovitin seitsemiä farkkuja ja päädyin ostamaan yhdet 50 eurolla. Sitten poikkesin kirjakauppaan ostamaan Himmelsjahr 2015:n. Metrolla jatkoin Kreuzbergiin. Nautin yhden siiderin, ja jatkoin metrolla ja ratikalla Prenzlauer Bergiin. Itä viehätti silmää. Kävin syömässä argentiinalaisen pihvin 11 eurolla – lännessä olisi ma... read more

Perjantaiksi olin suunnitellut auringonottoa puistossa. Mutta kun satoi, tuli suunnitelmiin muutos. Olin lisäksi jättänyt osan vaatteista kuivumaan parvekkeelle, jotta aamuaurinko kuivattaisi ne. No ei auttanut muuta kuin kaivaa esiin silitystarvikkeet. Tyttäreni oli pyytänyt ostamaan pienoismalliruohoa Kreuzbergista Moritzplatzilta, joten lähdin sinne. Kauppa löytyi. Palasin bussilla takaisin asunnolle. Illalla menin käymään Jukka Sakarin luona Grunewaldissa. Mennessä poikkesin syömässä Kudammilla pitsan. Parvekkeella juotiin olutta.

Olin sopinut bridgepelin klo 18:ksi Wilmersdorfiin Albert-Achillesstrasselle. Partnerini oli kilpailunjohtaja. Pelaajakunta oli koh... read more

So we are already finishing our second day and we are exhausted! Step count over the last few days? 39,000! But we have had an incredible time! Berlin is not a city I would have put at the top of my To Do list but with your best friend living there, I suppose it was inevitable! However I have found it to be an incredible city with a hard hitting, relatively young history! Tuesday was spent relaxing by the lake with a picnic lunch before heading back to Louise's to hang out with her lovely housemates! Yesterday morning we were invited to breakfast with Louise's landlord/lady which really set us up for the day! I am embarrassed to say I knew next to nothing about the history of Berlin but after a 2.5 hour walking tour ... read more

Hi all, Louise here. I wanted to just update you on a traumatic experience I had yesterday (13.08.14) So here we were this afternoon, enjoying a lovely picnic beside a pretty lake called Schlachtensee (in the south west of Berlin, famous for man - eating catfish) , when I realised that I desperately needed to pee. Now as many seasoned lake goers may know, this can be one of the most tricky situations you may come across, as these wildernesses rarely have mains electricity, let alone mod cons like flushing toilets. Never the less I ventured bravely forth in search of relief, leaving my fellow travellers vulnerable and scared amongst beer - drinking, shisha smoking berlin youths in little more than speedos. I searched for little more than a few minutes before I saw a sign ... read more
