Yesterday I managed to get out and I wanted to get lost in one of the local parks so i did I went to the nearest Tiergarten which was only around five minutes away on the S-Bahn. The garden was quite impressive its size was breathtaking, as I didn’t know where exactly I was. There were lots of maps to indicate your general location but once you are in the garden there are many trails a person can take which made it more enjoyable. The garden I went to was called Grober Tiergarten which hold many symbols and landmarks is over 500 acres large I was impresses and tired by the end of my day but not to worry I was reenergized with Currywurst, which made me a happy camper. One of the most notable landmarks ... read more

Today I decided to finally make my way across to the other side of the city and see what I was most excited about for in my visit to Berlin. The Berlin was hold tremendous history and I was really excited to get a look at all the murals it had to offer. Living here in Berlin has become a quite easy task for me as I discover and explore different place to eat and get entertainment. To get to the Berlin Wall I had to get the train for what seem to be a really short ride. Once I arrived to the East Side Gallery the wall was immense and very impressive. Knowing that I was standing at the site that separated and divided the city for over 25 years was a remarkable feeling. Since ... read more

On my 3rdday in Berlin we hopped back on the coach to travel to Potsdam. Less than an hour later we arrived at Sanssouci… wow! We entered from the side, which makes it look like just a one-story yellow building. But as you walk around to the back you are able to marvel at its beauty. It is painted a lush golden shade that glows in the sunlight. It is rowed with windows that are elegantly decorated. I turned my head to my head to the left I noticed terraces cascading down to a huge and beautiful garden. The palace was built in the mid-18th century and was the summer palace to the King of Prussia, Fredrick the Great. It is done in a Rococo style and it is named after a French phrase meaning “without ... read more

A huge day, am posting photos without captions but will hopefully get back to it tomorrow. We did a great walking tour of Berlin, but it was a really exhausting walking for 4 hours, the kids were great, tired but no complaints. schnitzel and pork knuckle for dinner, traditional food and beer (still not as good as Karen's schnitzel!, feedback from cooper). The city has so much to see and do, three days doesn't do it justice. Amazing buildings and history.... read more

I waved goodbye to Poland as I caught a flight from Krakow to Berlin. Are accommodation was located very close to the Berlin Hauptbahnhof (Berlin Central Station). So handy! Our accommodation has terrible food so after dinner every night we would sneak over to the train station to buy pizza or ice-cream… The first full day consisted of a coach tour of the key sights of the city. I was bombarded by beautiful sights such as the stunning Reichstag building, huge Berlin Cathedral, gleaming Berlin Victory Column, Altes Museum and elegant French Cathedral. Luckily we got off the bus to truly see parts of the Berlin Wall, Brandenburg Gate, Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. The memorial is rows upon rows of freestanding pillars concrete pillars. Before your enter it, it looks as if ... read more

There is already a lot of information about Tierpark Berlin on line so I’ll just give my thoughts and opinions here. Overall, I liked it. Of course there are sub-standard bits, namely some of the enclosures in the Alfred-Brehm Haus and the sun bear enclosures – which are awful, but there are lots of good bits too. I liked the highland area because of the layout and the range of species and I thought the crocodile house was very well done. The vulture aviary and the gull aviary were really good too. There were lots of very nice birds in the pheasantry and I would have loved more time than I had to watch them. The free-roaming pelicans were another nice feature, as was the huge open area with camel paddocks, the nice wooded enclosures with ... read more

Saturday 4 July 2015 This Is to be a day of celebration. Having waited 70 years for a birthday spent in Berlin, today's the day. It's going to be another scorcher with 35 degrees predicted, so pacing ourselves, plenty of fluids, keeping out of the sun and treating air conditioned buildings as our friends are all going to be important. There are some treats in store. First, a visit to the East Side Gallery, the name given to a 100 metre stretch of the Berlin Wall which has been transformed by many artistic expressions, opinions and ideas into a giant work of street art. This visit needed to be short because of the extreme heat, but showed how important that wall Is for remembering, and also for its expressions of hope for the future. Time for ... read more

Friday 3 July 2015 After a very hot day yesterday and experiencing Berlin public transport at its worst we were now ready for anything. One thing we were not ready for was an even hotter day. Yesterday's 30 degrees was mild compared to the 35 degrees today. As brave Kiwis say, "The show must go on". The Intrepid Duo dressed appropriately and headed off into the heat of the day. Yesterday was quite a learning curve when it came to understanding the public transport system of Berlin. The purchase of the day ticket was a breeze. Working out the U-bahn, S-bahn, tram and bus takes some sorting out. What direction are we going? Where is the station? What exit do we take? Today will be better. Our first destination is Alexanderplatz. That's easy, just one train ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! This morning, after a really good and healthy sleep, me and Andreas said our goodbyes to Sebastien for his short but very kind and generous hospitality. I wish we had more time here with him, it was a genuine pleasure talking with him over a few beers last night. Following his tip from yesterday we made our way over towards the East Gallery. We jumped off a couple of stations early though as I spotted a church that looked interesting. It turned out to be closed and actually looked kind of abandoned, but I guess that is a logical effect of the spreading secularism in this part of the world. It all has positives and negatives as so much else has. The church was named the Emmaus Church and at least from ... read more

Thursday 2 July 2015 With three days to see Berlin, we decided to make a little list which soon turned into quite a big list. Berlin has a lot to see. Next step, group the sights according to location then find out how to use the public transport system to get there. We have enjoyed using the integrated tram, train and bus systems in several European cities and plan to do the same in Berlin . The extreme heat being experienced in much of Europe has arrived in Berlin too. Fingers crossed the transport will all be air conditioned in the 30+ degree temperatures. With a list for the day and plenty of water we emerged from our comfortable hotel in what was East Berlin and set off for the nearest underground station, ten minutes walk ... read more
