Saturday 4 July 2015 This Is to be a day of celebration. Having waited 70 years for a birthday spent in Berlin, today's the day. It's going to be another scorcher with 35 degrees predicted, so pacing ourselves, plenty of fluids, keeping out of the sun and treating air conditioned buildings as our friends are all going to be important. There are some treats in store. First, a visit to the East Side Gallery, the name given to a 100 metre stretch of the Berlin Wall which has been transformed by many artistic expressions, opinions and ideas into a giant work of street art. This visit needed to be short because of the extreme heat, but showed how important that wall Is for remembering, and also for its expressions of hope for the future. Time for ... read more

Friday 3 July 2015 After a very hot day yesterday and experiencing Berlin public transport at its worst we were now ready for anything. One thing we were not ready for was an even hotter day. Yesterday's 30 degrees was mild compared to the 35 degrees today. As brave Kiwis say, "The show must go on". The Intrepid Duo dressed appropriately and headed off into the heat of the day. Yesterday was quite a learning curve when it came to understanding the public transport system of Berlin. The purchase of the day ticket was a breeze. Working out the U-bahn, S-bahn, tram and bus takes some sorting out. What direction are we going? Where is the station? What exit do we take? Today will be better. Our first destination is Alexanderplatz. That's easy, just one train ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! This morning, after a really good and healthy sleep, me and Andreas said our goodbyes to Sebastien for his short but very kind and generous hospitality. I wish we had more time here with him, it was a genuine pleasure talking with him over a few beers last night. Following his tip from yesterday we made our way over towards the East Gallery. We jumped off a couple of stations early though as I spotted a church that looked interesting. It turned out to be closed and actually looked kind of abandoned, but I guess that is a logical effect of the spreading secularism in this part of the world. It all has positives and negatives as so much else has. The church was named the Emmaus Church and at least from ... read more

Thursday 2 July 2015 With three days to see Berlin, we decided to make a little list which soon turned into quite a big list. Berlin has a lot to see. Next step, group the sights according to location then find out how to use the public transport system to get there. We have enjoyed using the integrated tram, train and bus systems in several European cities and plan to do the same in Berlin . The extreme heat being experienced in much of Europe has arrived in Berlin too. Fingers crossed the transport will all be air conditioned in the 30+ degree temperatures. With a list for the day and plenty of water we emerged from our comfortable hotel in what was East Berlin and set off for the nearest underground station, ten minutes walk ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! I slept far better tonight (most likely due to complete exhaustion) but even so we kept a very leisure pace today. Mostly because we kind of managed to see most of what Berlin has to offer (in terms of sights at least) yesterday and we still have two days here so no point in rushing around today. Following the tip we got from Lina yesterday we made our way to the former Tempelhof Airfield, nowadays the Tempelhof Park. I'll be honest, neither me nor Andreas really felt anything about this place. It is pretty much what it sounds like, a big airfield turned into a public place. So, suffice to say we weren't impressed and we continued on. We decided to go to the Holocaust Memorial and laid out the best way ... read more

After a few days of settling down I wanted to discover the city and explore the different methods of transportation in Berlin. I utilized Google to find the best way to arrive to the Museum Island, I am currently residing in Aletto Kudamm, which is by the Zoo so there are various method of transportation that make stop around my area. Google told me that I would have to take the train to arrive to the Musuem Island. I went to the train station and went on the platform for the S-Bahn which is the train that goes above ground. The City of Berlin also has buses, taxis, ubers, S- Bahn, as well as U-Bahn which are similar to the S-Bahn, however, they routes and platforms are underground in comparison to the s-Bahn. When I arrived ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! Well, I can't exactly claim to have been in tip top shape today, seeing as how I didn't sleep at all tonight. Between people slamming doors, talking loudly, having sex and Andreas snoring like a dinosaur with severe asthma I didn't manage to fall asleep. I did my best to keep up but I sure was tired today, I still feel like we managed to cover a lot of ground today though. Our day started with a speedy breakfast together with our host Tim. He was going to a job interview though so he really just rushed down a few sandwiches and then he was off after providing us with a key. Since we had a key now we decided to take it a bit calmer and laid out a preliminary itinerary ... read more

Hi Everyone, This past weekend was Berlin. First impression is that it is very much a German city - extremely clean and organized, but lacking the flair of Rome/Barcelona/Paris. I can't put a definite finger on it, but I think it's mainly down to how much newer everything is. The monuments are scattered amongst bright new buildings instead of through crowded alleyways and corner shops. That being said, it was a lot of fun. While exploring Brandenburg gate on Saturday, we ran into the annual gay pride parade. Beer, currywurst, and costumes everywhere :D As always, many pictures. Cheers, Joel... read more

Monday, June 22, 2015 It was raining fairly heavily for a majority of the day, and I wanted to do something so I just walked around. I walked to the Tiergartens and saw and Sinti and Roma memorial. It was... I can't really describe how I felt. Maybe mournful, but that can't exactly describe it fully. I saw an accident with a police car and a taxi driver and that was pretty scary. I've never heard one before, but I won't forget it. Luckily people helped them get out of the car as soon as possible, which was nice. I was too far away to be an immediate helper. Tuesday, June 23, 2015 I did a lot today even though I woke up late and it was still raining. I visited checkpoint Charlie and the ... read more

The flight across the United States and over the Atlantic Ocean was excruciating almost unbearable, however, the arrival onto Frankfort and then Berlin made it all worth the wait. Once I arrived at Frankfort my emotions became enthusiastic about all the differences between America and Germany. The airports in Los Angeles and Frankfort were very similar; they both had malls inside of the terminals, which I thought was very modern and luxurious. Once I arrived in Berlin nerves began to settle in. I was out of my comfort zone not being able to communicate with people in the manner in which I am so accustomed to. Also being a tourist I didn’t want to be victim of people taking advantage of my inability to understand my surroundings. The first place I need to find was a ... read more
