so i went to a place called ecsholzplatz to watch the game, it's basically a massive park filled with picnic tables (about 800) and beer stands. I met two other australians on the way there and we were probably the most depressed people in all of germany for 80 odd minutes. then we scored, and of course sam went crazy, i jumped around knocking over a bench, and threw someones tennis ball straight into the crowd...... THEN we scored again, more similar celebrations but the best was yet to come. I made everybody stand up so we could make fools of ourselves when the final whistle went, BUT we scored AGAIN!!! this time, i decided to jump on a picnic table, and run down the length of them (about 50) giving everybody in my way high ... read more

today is mittwoch (wednesday) and I am making curry!!!! nothing extraordinary has occured since my last post thing. I watched the socceroos V holland, arjen robben is a cheating bastard, and sterjovski is crap but other than that the game was good. We went to a theme park on monday which was absolutely awesome aside from the fact that i had consumed ridiculous amounts of alcohol and other things the night before which meant i didnt eat all day from fear of sharing it with everybody on the rollercoaster later on... we've done some more bike riding, my bum is getting used to it. if i ever had to go to prison i'd be a-ok Germany is green, really really green, and really cold, my shoes are pretty much ruined from the snow so im wearing ... read more

today is sunday. On thursday it snowed here so we went hiking in the mountains and built a snowman and threw snowballs. I tried many times to cause an avalanche but failed miserably. my clothes arent quite adequate for snow, rain.. or anything really On friday morning i woke up and felt like going to france. so i did. I roed Ingas bike across the rhine and into france, everybody speaks french and i didnt see any berets or croissants. my bum was really sore from the bike. so much so that yesterday when i felt like going to france again i had to turn back because it was so sore. i#ve been drinking lots of beer. last night i went to a place that served various fruit flavours, i felt it my duty to sample ... read more

Dear everybody I’m in germany now, my german is not as good as i thought it was, everybody speaks so fast here and it’s quite difficult to understand (and they dont serve beer at mcdonalds) The plane ride’s were uneventful, I read some books, magazines.. basically everything I could get my hands on… checked my watch, and we´d been flying for about an hour.. long time to go. I also managed to spill curried fish all over myself during turbulence, although I certainly didn’t allow my beer to spill. Japan was beautiful. Japanese people are too polite, but I could get used to it I guess. It took me about an hour to order my meal, everything was in japanese ?!!? it was impressively easy to order a beer however. The airport was beautiful but it ... read more

I just got back from 5 days in the SW corner of Germany. Basically I had my "spring break"...the temperature there was 10 or 11 degrees celsius, instead of zero, and a couple days we had some lovely sun. My friend Laura studies at the University there, which is super-old. It's in a mostly-catholic, wine-drinking part of Germany, with low unemployment...very different from Berlin. Anyway, Laura had been at UNC for a year, studying English. She's very fluent! I met her and a bunch of her friends. (I also went on a side-trip into France, to the city of Colmar, but that will get a separate entry.) The quirkiest thing I experienced was the Basel airport, into which I flew. The airport straddles the national boundary between France and Switzerland (and Germany is just a few ... read more

Guten Tag! back in Germany. It's very cold here in Freiburg. It's in the black forest, which is in the south of Germany. Tonight we went into the city to get some food and were trapped in a snowstorm! It was so cool! in a very cold way. We were pelted with small snow balls. We visited Neuschwannstein today (mad king ludwig's castle). We took a horse and carriage up to the castle. it was beautiful in the snow. Tscüß (pronouned chewss, meaning, see ya later dude!)... read more

A quick trip across the Rhine 10/10/05 - we took a drive across the Rhine into Germany and visited the city of Freiburg. The cathedral there is a stunning Gothic affair and surveyed the flattening of the city by the Americans during WWII. The rest of the city was leveled by an onslaught of bombing and was rebuilt largely by women. It was hard to find male workers at the time as most were dead or in prison. I would not describe it as a lovely city. It was interesting, but a shame that the town clock tower has a McDonalds advertising sign just under it and the eatery is so close to the clock tower. I found it amazing the Freiburgians would allow them to do such a thing. Chocolate sardines We noticed in a ... read more

061805 My riding partner for the flight was delightful Brigitte. She lives in CLT with her husband. Both moved from Germany awhile ago. They've lived in Charlotte for four years, but return to their house near Ramstein often. Brigitte has worked in environmental sciences, and her husband is an engineer working in coal scubbing technologies. Brigitte is currently starting up a business on German produced furniture based in Charlotte. Arrived in Frankfurt after a trip of seven hours. It felt shorter than I expected and I got little sleep. Took me too long to figure out to ask the Information booth staff where the neaest Deusche Bank ATM was located. Five hundred euro was the max, so loaded up, I found my way to the DB () station and found the office to validate my SelectPass. ... read more

I have traveled to Freiburg, on the edge of the black forest. It was a very cozy town. The streets are lined with a running water way where children have taken off their shoes and wade in it and bikes appear to be a major mode of transportation. I arrived on what was apperently market day and to my delight I was able to aquire good bread, sausage, cheese, honey and fruit. The market was just like the Farmers market back home with one notable exception, this one took place just outside the Freiburg Münster, a towering late-Gothic cathedral with stunning stain glass windows. I took the cable car trip to the top of the Schauinsland peak and hiked all over the area. It was beautiful scenery, especially when you could see a town in the ... read more
