A few years ago, I started my first job as a teacher at a college in Swindon and I was lucky enough to have a fantastic German assistant called Andrea to help me out in class. Not only was she great fun to work with but she was as bonkers as me so it was inevitable we would quickly become firm friends. Alas, aside from a bit of a chat at our wedding last year (may I add that I was chuffed to bits that she flew over especially), we haven't seen each other since. Until today.... My father had an appointment in the nearby city of Freiburg this afternoon so Glynn and I hitched a ride. We last visited Freiburg in winter when the Christmas market was in full swing and a fresh layer ... read more

Tommy’s roommate is a woman named Julianna. She is German, originally from a small town about an hour outside of Freiburg. Julianna is also a performer/actor/dancer/singer. While I was staying with Tommy, Julianna was working on atleast four or five different shows/performances, all at once. One of her performance jobs was playing the role of a tap-dancing Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in a holiday show for kids at EuropaPark, a sort of European Disney World (not to be confused with EuroDisney). It is actually more akin to Epcot Center, in that each section of the park is meant to represent/replicate different countries and regions in Europe. I say ‘countries and regions’ because not every country was represented. Lithuania was one country not represented in Europa Park. And there was ‘ScandinaviaLand,’ which was to represent all of ... read more

My time so far here in Freiburg has been very fun and interesting. Meeting lots of interesting people, hanging out in coffee shops, working on some dance performances, going running, walking around the city. Some exploring of the Black Forest, which surrounds Freiburg. My ‘savings’ from working in France has been disappearing much faster than I had anticipated, and as a result I have a very low budget right now. About a week ago it occurred to me that I might need to make some extra money somehow, so I began looking for work. Monday I got up early and hit the streets with the intention of getting a job. I had heard from friends who live here in Freiburg of an office that connects students in need of short-term or part-time employment to employers who ... read more

I have now been in Germany for a bit over a week. Two Saturdays ago I took a train from the South of France to Paris, where I caught a flight to Basel Airport, which is just over the border in Switzerland. When you are exiting the baggage claim you have two choices: there is a Customs desk for ‘Germany/France’ which is stationed in front of the ‘Germany/France’ door, and there is the ‘Switzerland’ Customs desk in front of the Swiss Exit. Outside the exits there is a metal fence separating the two pickup areas, which are mirror images of each other. It had the feel of a sort of postmodern Alice in Wonderland, where each door enters you into a different country…… After a one-hour bus ride, I was in Freiburg. Freiburg is a really ... read more

Μετά αναχωρήσαμε για Freiburg/Germany. Αφήστε ... read more

It’s so weird today I woke up and realized that I have been here for a full week. This time last week I found myself sitting in between a German-Indian man and an obese Italian on my way to Frankfurt. And now? Now I have a true blue German beer gut. Ask me if I care. I am studying in a medium-sized city called Freiburg (yes, the residents are considered Freiburgers) in the very southwest tip of Germany. The city is fast-paced, not too touristy, and the southern Germans seem to find American students amusing. It’s also been about 85 degrees everyday. Awesome that I packed just about all winter clothes but, hey, I’m not complaining. I am living in a dorm for the Albert-Ludwigs University of Freiburg. I live on a flat with six other ... read more

I'm home now, I got out of London two days before all that mess, I'm very lucky. But I figured I should update the rest of the blog, I'm about one week behind! Freiburg is in southwest Germany, right next to Basel, Switzerland. It was one of our favorite cities- people rode bikes everywhere, full of anarchists and hippies, there was a protest against police brutality the day we left and some protests against Israe by the local Lebanese community as well. But the reason why people go there is mainly to see the Black Forest, which was really nice. We just relaxed for two days, riding our rented bikes around. Except for one day I had a really bad fever and couldn't think straight and left a poster tube on the train full of people's ... read more

We are back in Germany and on the last leg of our trip. Had a great 3 days in Lausanne just relaxing and biking along Lake Geneva. Weather great, but decided to move on to Germany. Easy to tell we are back in Germany because there are bicycles and bicycle paths everywhere. We are in Freiberg in soutwestern Germany just north of Basel, Switzerland and just a little souteast of Strasbourg, France. Small university town of about 200,000 in a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains and on the edge of the Black Forest. Weather is great - 90's in the day, but onlz about 35% humidity and in the 60's at night. This is probably not listed as one of the main tourist stops, but should be. On Sunday we biked about 24 kilometers through the ... read more

So after a 5 hour journey with more beautiful scenary we made it to our campsite called camping Oase 40km north of Frieburg. Its a lovely friendly camp site that supplies fresh rolls & OJ every morning and they even do your washing for you (if you can catch reception while its open)...what more can you ask for. Well, actually theres a swimming pool just next door too with loads of sunbathing area which is useful for all the hot weather we're still having. Its quite nice in the evenings coz we get to watch a thunder storm and cool down then its nice again by the morning. Except yesterday when it was a bit over cast so we went to Europa Park. Its a big theme park about 7km from the campsite, we had a ... read more
