I got back at a reasonable hour on Saturday and Chantal my roommate asked me if I wanted to go hiking on Sunday. She said it wouldn’t be too long and was supposed to be a beautiful day so I of course agreed. Chantal had said it was going to be 30 kilometers but since she said it was going to be short I figured that my math skills were slipping because 18+ miles wasn’t a light hike in my opinion. She is a part of a hiking club that goes every Sunday and they meet at some train station in Paris at a specific time and then hikes for the day and comes back before too late in the evening. It turns out she was right the hike was 30 km (18.6 miles!!) and so ... read more

"Oh shit! Sorry mate!" I mean "Pardon monsieur!" This is me on the metro in rush hour in Paris with my huge pack on my back knocking French lads left right & center! We stayed 3 nights in Pari (the french don't like to say the letters at the end of words) and it was great, so many famous things to see. Mum booked a heap of stuff back in AUS before she came, which was great. So for 2 days we had a bus tour but u could get on & off when ever you want and catch the next bus when your done lookin. The buses went everywhere & there where heaps of them (if your in Pari do it for sure, only 25€). Day 1 was Notre Dame, we climbed 20 million stairs ... read more

Family Snaps Beatrice showed us copies of the collection of family photos she has, which relate to Rob’s family which originated in Alsace. We also visited the cemetery where Rob’s Great, Great Grandfathers brothers family are buried, along with their children. 10/10/05 - Maison Trois Epis We visited what was the family holiday home at Trois Epis. It is now a convent and was sold by the family back in 1950 to the Sisters of Charity (you know the flying nun variety of nuns). It is a grand maison and must have been a very elegant place in it’s time to spend a vacation. From the house there are wonderful views back to Colmar and beyond. On a good day you can see a long way into Germany. Trois Epis is the starting point of many ... read more

Tuesday we were “stuck” in their house because the train and busses were on strike so we took the day to catch up on reading and went for a walk down to the beach and wandered about the area. Actually it was really nice to just take a forced breather. The transportation issue was counterbalanced on Wednesday when we were really spoiled rotten because Cindy said she was willing to drive us some place we couldn’t get by train so we went to St. Paul de Vence to see the Foundation Maeght which is a museum that has a very small permanent collection of works but when we were there the focus was on prints, it was really interesting and some of the works were fantastic. We then walked around the perched city, which is really ... read more

I have so much to update you on that I am going to divide it into three blogs so that way if you have time to read one you know where to go back to when you have time again. Please forgive me if they are a bit long or disjoint, or even full of errors, fatigue has settled in but I want to share my adventures with you all! Enjoy! A week ago on Wednesday a friend of Winnie’s invited her to come see her band play here in Pairs and set aside two tickets so off we went to explore that scene. It is really amazing to get to say: “there are two tickets under this name, I’m a friend of the drummer,” so cool. The venue was really fun and the concert was ... read more

8/10/05 - Fête anniversaire - 30 ans mon petite cousine Caroline and her family invited a wonderful group of friends to celebrate her 30th birthday. Lucky for us, most could speak very good English and they were also very mindful that we could understand some french if they spoke “lentement” (slowly) and did not go beyond kindergarten level! Again, Beatrice excelled herself with the preparations and the food. Jean did what he is very good at, which is entertaining people in his cellar. It is a wonderful place to have a drink and talk. In fact, it is a magnet for the men; much like standing around the BBQ is for men in Australia. We gave Caroline the first installment of the Australian sponsorship for her Savate World Championship bid, a pair of 8oz boxing gloves. ... read more

Disney Land here we come....... The day started off fantastically, First we actually had a taxi come to the hotel so we were pretty relieved about that. Then she eats the whole way and wouldnt listen to us and then gets annoyed with us because we cant understand her and she couldnt understand us and it ended up being a really expensive taxi ride!!!! So not cool!!! Get to Disneyland and buy tickets for 2 days across 2 parks. We head into Disneyland itself and the first ride we go into is called Phantom Manor and so not that scary. It wouldve been way better if they had things grabbing you or spiderwebs falling on you but nothing really so i took photos on the way round. Then the Indiana Jones ride was good but took ... read more

Europe » France » Champagne-Ardenne » Reims October 9th 2005

This weekend was one of the excursions sponsored by CEA, who arranged my housing and enrollment in Paris. The trip was to the Champagne region, with main stops in the cities of Reims, Épernay, and Meaux with a night being spent in the small town of Montmort. First we visited Reims. The Cathedral at Reims (Notre-Dame de Reims) is where the Clovis was baptized on Christmas Eve in the year 496 by Saint Remi, thus establishing a Christian tradition for the Kingdom of the Franks. Clovis wanted to be baptized and a huge crowd had gathered because it was a huge deal for the monarch to become Christian. The story goes that there were so many people present and it was so crowded that the person bringing the chrism (holy oil) to Saint Remi couldn’t get ... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Lyon October 8th 2005

Having spent a couple of days in the small town of Beaugency (Near Blois) we got the train back into Paris and then into Lyon. Beaugency was nice though and we saw a big chateau on our day trip to Blois. Whilst we enjoyed our stay out in the country we are glad to be back in a place with more modern facilities and english speaking people. Lyon looks good from what we have seen, we will upload some photos when we find an internet cafe. Our hostel is on a very steep hill overlooking the main city and the view is great! On monday we head to Nice and then Frejus 2 days later. ... read more
