2/10/05 - 7/10/05 Encore à Alsace Arriving in Strasbourg was a relief in many ways. Paris is a wonderful city, but after seven days we are in need of some relative peace. We were only in Strasbourg one afternoon, night and morning, before collecting our lease car. Our hotel had huge rooms, which was a surprise, but unfortunately next morning we found out there was no hot water. So, you can imagine how impressed we were (especially Lorenza). We collected our brand, spanking new, Renault Scenic and made it to Niedermorschwihr without causing any major traffic incidents. Although I am sure the red coloured, tourist plates on the car scream a warning to keep well clear of our vehicle! And so begins another blog at London Gatwick airport where we spent 8 hours sleeping and lying on the seats before getting a bus to Heathrow airport to catch our plane to Paris. We get to Paris and ask how to find our hotel and everyone says 'I dont know' whichis not what you really want to hear on 3 hours sleep over 2 days and youre in a different country and cant speak the language and its dark outside as well - i was so not impressed. So we ended up catching the shuttle bus to Disneyland bus station and taxied from there which wasnt cheap but we didnt really have much choice. We got to the hostel and checked in at bout 830/9pm and slept till bout 10am the next morning before asking how ... read more

Life has been far too complicated and difficult to write about this week, so I have created two lists to keep you all abreast of what I am feeling right now. Sorry, I haven't taken any pictures either! I need to go sightseeing soon...I think I will be in Montmartre this weekend. Believe it or not, I still haven't been there since I arrived in Paris! Things I like about living in Paris: 1. The architecture. 2. Living on the Seine. 3. Cheese/Bread/Pastries. 4. Farmers' Markets everyday in many places. 5. Museums galore. 6. Helping lost or angry Americans on the streets. 7. the Metro 8. the nice girls in my dorm. 9. Getting fluent! 10. German classes are starting soon! Things I don't really care for: 1. Paperwork - more than you can ever imagine ... read more

Bonjour. Oui. Merci. And that was about the extent of it a week ago. Thumbing down a car near the french border I say, "Bonjour ah Annecy?" before receiving a barrage of french (none of which I understood) to which I enthusiastically responded, "Oui". I decided to take the opportunity to visit France while my friend Guillaume (or Wiremu in NZ) was home for a couple of weeks... With a native guide who is also a french teacher I was well set up for a week of 'the french experience'. The old town of Briancon is surrounded by fortified walls and nestled beneath the mountains where 3 valleys intersect. The oddly painted buildings and narrow cobbled streets hold many tales of the years that have passed, and hide the network of tunnels that lie dormant beneath ... read more

So it turns out that since France is so fabulously supportive of the arts, the first Sunday of every month almost all museums are open to the public for no entrance fee. So this past Sunday, after a fabulous meal at the restaurant Parc aux Cerfs thanks to the program, I decided to go to the Musee Orsay with a couple of friends. On the way we passed a fabulous street band playing "jazz traditonnel" and going by the name of "La Planche a Dixie" as I learned from their card. I especially loved the guy playing the washboard with what looked like thimbles on all his fingers. They were the first of many delights we fell upon that day contributing to a joy that seemed to be coming from nowhere as most of the city ... read more

... read more

Friday I went to Versailles, a huge palace built outside of Paris by Louis XIV and that was captured during the French Revolution. The size of the palace itself, with hundreds of rooms, is impressive enough, but when you actually see the way these people lived, it’s amazing! A majority of the rooms have very little furniture, but everything inside is trimmed with velvet or ermine and gold is laced through all the tapestries. The walls and even the bedspreads and pillows are covered in velvet and gold! Some rooms are so rich in color and texture already and the ceiling has been painted with murals of mythological stories or exploits of the French kings. And just remember, this was not their permanent home, only a vacation home! We saw the Hall of Mirrors where the ... read more

Voiaj in Peru - geneza Aici incepe jurnalul si calatoria noastra in scris. Speram sa va facem sa calatoriti cu noi si sa va transmitem o mica particica din emotiile noastre. Totul a inceput in urma cu exact .. 347 de zile. Cum ne-a venit idea?
