Paris....endless views, history, art...talk and more talk... Exhibit; Renoir and Renoir....The side by side display of the paintings of the the father and the films of the son. What a contrast. A continuous loop of the movie Moulon Rouge next to an oil painting of the same scene: the movie boring after two replays; the painting something you could look at for a lifetime without the slightest fatigue...so much vitality in what the paint reveals:: At night. After a brief visit with Jeff at qn opening of two landscqpe painters we went to the Mabou Mimes version of The Doll's House castwith dwarves in the male roles. This framed and made the comment that the male power is invested in the very puffed up egos of very small personages. The scene was already part of what ... read more

Over the last three days we have seen a lot of famous sights; Eiffel Tower, Arc De Triumph, Notre Dame, and the Paris bike show, where we met the Vario Boys. We are having a lot of fun trying to decipher french and also find our way on the metro system(not so hard once your used to it) Our hostel is cheap, with cheap comes noise and bad breakfasts though we have been cooking our own meals at night to save $ and eat better. Take a look at the photos and we'll update soon!... read more

So i am sitting on the train which was supposed to leave Paris at 10 19, but left at 11 36 instead. Aside from the actual delay of the train, there was also a security scare which resulted in the terminal being evacuated and dogs sniffing everyone’s butts. Usually, I am not one to panick about things like that, but when I started to see security personnel running through our terminal and telling us to evacuate in French, it did speed up my hear rate a bit. Anyway, so I just got served champagne on the train (thanks to my grandmother who loves me enough to get first class for me). Time for my four thoughts on Paris: 1. Overall, Paris is a great city to visit with loads of things to do, and if you ... read more

30/9/05 - The RER Affair Right this minute I am exhausted - I have just spent about 4 and a half hours trying to get from Paris Gare de l’Est (rail station) to CDG Airport and back, just to drop some bloody suitcases off - who had that bright idea? We met my sister Marg, husband Rob (lots of Rob’s in this blog) and their two children, Thomas and Courtney, at Gare de l’Est. They had taken the train from Strasbourg and it would be our only chance to meet up while we are all in France. So, Rob (the husband) decided it would be a great idea if Rob (the blogger) helped him take most of the luggage to their hotel. Meanwhile the others would wait for our return in a café. Well, it was ... read more

I know that I still haven't posted pictures of my dorm, but it is because every time I try the computers here for some reason just can't do it. So today I brought my laptop down to the computer room and plugged it in (wireless internet access is still a new thing in france, i can't get any from where i live). Hopefully more pictures will come with this post... Well, things are finally starting to work out here in la France. I received my teaching schedule - All day Monday, Tuesday, and two hours Friday afternoon. It's really not so bad. Now I am beginning the arduous process of finding another job, and since I don't have my residence card yet, it seems that finding a job will be even trickier. I spent all day ... read more

The last night in Munich was spent at the theater (just me--Alan's German isn't quite up to it) and it was another amazing experience. Most of you have heard me comment on the German's peculiarities in adopting everything classical (thank God, not the Rosenkavalier) to a modern mise-a-scene. This time it was an 1895 Hauptman play 'Before the dawn'--about very rich German capitalist's family's exploitation of the Silesian coal workers. Well, would you believe it, they changed it to a German family in Bali, quite conscientiously and beautifully, and the exploitation of the seamstresses (Nike, outsourcing, etc). and it really worked! The alcoholic, incestuous clan was contrasted with a dear, articulate and ineffective radical, a friendship left over from student days. Sad, that the comment was so prescient and so useless, at least in practical terms--I ... read more

So it turns out my program headquarters (where I'll be taking 2 classes each semester) is only a couple blocks from the Luxembourg garden! Of course, there are gardens all over the place, but I still think this is especially nice. On warm days (which are becoming more and more rare) I've been going into the garden to have my lunch and have derived much joy from the experience. One day, I went and sat by the petanque courts and watched a game. That was of course fascinating. The oldest man on the court appeared to be both respected patriarch as well as the butt of some joking. He had a magnet on a string to pick up his petanque balls so that he wouldn't have to bend over to get them (who knows what ... read more

Well we got the train to dover and visited the castle and cliffs there. lovely. This morningwe got the ferry to Calais and then two trains and two metro's to Paris. After getting lost on the metro we arrived safe and sound in our hostel. We stay here four nights and have a room to ourselves so Amanda and i are happy! Amanda says congrats to Laura & Tom on their baby. Having no english around us makes things much more interesting but we have managed to get bread, water and a pizza with bad French. Tomorrow we head to the Louvre to see stuff. We'll add some photos and stuff when we get to a computer that we can upload from. untill then, Au Reviour (i think) ... read more

27/9/05 Tuesday - I now have the grand distinction of having succeeded in having my Uncle and myself ejected from the Basilique du Sacre Cour! I am sure this is a world first, which I am very proud of. We went to Montmartre and took a browse through some shops, then a coffee below Sacre Cour. Lorenza decided to look at more shops, while Uncle Robert and I took a look at Sacre Cour. There was a Mass in progress and very obvious signs indicating that photos were not permitted. I discreetly took the cap off the lens of my camera and snapped off a pic, but alas the security folks are very vigilant and they spotted the movement of my zoom lens from many metres away. So, the security guard obviously did not recognise Uncle ... read more
