We stayed on Ile St. Louis, which is the smaller of the two main islands on the Seine on Paris. It contains very few hotels, but a large number of restaurants. The larger Ile de la Cite is home to both Notre Dame and St. Chapelle. Attached are some pictures walking around the island. I had planned night time photos of the island streets, as well as Notre Dame, but it was rainy each night we were there.... read more

I decided to head out to my favorite museum in Paris, while J took care of business. The Musee Marmottan houses a collection of Monet’s works donated by his family as well as other Impressionist paintings. It is located on the West end of town, several blocks walk from the Metro through a lovely park. The museum is in what looks to be an old mansion with 3 levels and various odd shaped rooms complete with creaky wood floors. I just love the ambiance of it and the way the light shines in the windows. It was here 3 years ago that I discovered my favorite painting of all time - Cloudless Morning at Quimperle by Henri Le Sidaner. Upon my return, I searched for it with great zeal. To my dismay, although part of the ... read more

...not much, really, but here are some pictures to enjoy. I played volleyball with a bunch of teachers at my school, and I was really nervous about it. As my dad said, "That sounds like it would be embarassing." But actually, for the first time in my life, I felt kind of athletic. I have a week and a half off of work starting Friday for All Saints' vacation. I will be going to more tourist sites in Paris, then heading off to Germany and Vienna with Chase Richards. Hopefully then the blog will pick up!... read more

We slept a full 12 hours so were ready to go! We picked up a few goodies at our neighborhood patisserie and headed out. Our last trip to Paris was a week long so we got a Carte Musee and spent a lot of time at museums. I highly recommend this. Fair warning though - the Louvre is closed Tuesdays, and most other museums at least 1 day a week so plan your time carefully! However, this time around we decided not to repeat too much and opted for churches and gardens instead. Our first stop was Saint Sulpice - anyone, anyone?? It’s mentioned in the Da Vinci Code if you’re into that. There is an amazing sundial on one side with a line of brass that bisects the church floor. The sun shines in through ... read more

Now, I woudn't want you to think that we're jet setters or anything, but last night The White Stripes rocked Paris, and we were there... We found out about the show online and purchased our tickets via the internet using something akin to French Ticketmaster, without the extra charges! ; ) Anyway, we arrived yesterday evening in Paris and with a bit of detective work, helped by good 'net research ahead of time, we a) found our hotel, b) found the ticket office branch conveniently located on same block of our hotel, c) found the ticketmaster-like desk at the music-books-electronics store, d) picked up our prepaid tickets using combination of credit card/passport/secret confirmation code, e) found our way to the venue 'Le Zenith', f) found a seat (general admission for all 6,000 of us), and g) ... read more

Here we are in the South of France. Having picked up Cousin Carol qt St Exupéry airport at Lyon (She flew in from Vancouver; we were enroute from Annecy to St Gervais). Now we are all 5 staying in a converted coach house from the 16th or 17th century in the small town of St Gervais near Bagnols (just across the river Rhone from Orange). There is no access to internet there so today I grabbed the opportunity at Uzès, little Medieval town near Pont du Gard which we just visited. Robin and I had been there in 1992, but it is such a thrill to see this magnificent aqueduct 2000 years old! 50 netres high, it carried fresh water from Uzès to Nimes (15km). Food, wine, and coffee all continue to be excellent. I will ... read more

Got here yesterday to great weather. Took 235 photos, will try to post some tonight. At Bryan's suggestion took 3mg melatonin and it seems to work fine. Probably all in my head though. Went to the top of Notre Dame. Walked around and went to cafes. Berthillion is closed Mon and Tues, so we'll save that for tomorrow! You know we love it. Been struggling finding Wi-Fi (or Wee-Fee as someone here said). And web cafe wouldn't let me plug in laptop. Hey - I'm paranoid about key sniffing attacks, what can I say? We're outside a cafe now, but it's actually kind of cold today. Probably will just sack up and pay the 5euro/15min in-hotel access tonight to get some photos up. On to Luxembourg Gardens...... read more

In Paris there are not many street performers, but one of the popular activities is rollerblading around cups in a slalom. The cups are quite close together and there are all these different styles of traversing them; some fast and some slow. I was experimenting with the camera here a bit to try and capture the motion with blur. These guys all had iPods. I estimate over 75% of people in Paris with music players had iPod. They love it. These were taken on the South bridge to Notre Dame. We've added some more pictures to yesterday's post, so take a look at it again!... read more

Arrived in Paris at 10AM. Decided to take the RER (train) into town from the airport to save a little $$. Unfortunately we stood in a long line at the ticket machine before discovering 1) it didn’t take US credit cards and 2) it didn’t sell the kind of tickets we wanted. We got a 3 day Paris Visite pass which gives you unlimited usage of the Metro and RER. It’s nice to have a pass so that you don’t have to stop to buy a ticket each time you get on and calculate the exact ticket price for each destination. We headed for the hotel on the Ile de St. Louis first. We had walked by this hotel the last time we were in Paris (Feb. 2002) and decided we would stay there on our ... read more
