So it is raining outside (not the nice cold rain i like, but the humid hurricane kind) and i am sick so i decided to stay inside sipping tea and emailing. I am trying to defeat a cold before it lays claim to my life. In Nice, i've met such a great group of people from my hostel room. there are 8 beds in the room and the first night 4 people actually paid to stay in the room, but i'm pretty sure about 10 people total were in with us. We cooked dinner, drank about a million bottles of whatnot, and went out dancing. the fun group consisted of some great bay area Cal Poly girls, a candian, some New Zealanders and two Philly boys whose accents make me miss my east coast friends, and ... read more

Just dowloading pics for now....places to go...Marleen and I went to the supermarche to buy groceries The cheeses are superb and we eat a lot. I will remark on her cooking later. Gourmet. Helena arrived home from school for the holiday last evening and we had a great time. She is as beautiful as Niels is handsome. She is off on her horse today. Ivo came into town and took me on a tour. Just behind the shop is the castle of Foix and many of the oldest houses in town are there bult into the side of the mountain. The houses are really in caves: There is a discoteque there also that is called, "LaCave". It is under the ground. I think I cqn tqlk Marleen into tqking me dancing! We also went to the ... read more

As of the late date of October 10 I began “real” school. Whereas before I only had 3 consecutive hours a day of “Intensive Language Program,” I know have ~ 5 classes which are unfortunately spread all across my days in very awkward ways. Let’s have a look at what exactly Winnie is studying here in France. First of all, the program I am studying in is called “The Parisian Center for Critical Studies” mmhmm, excellent, but what exactly does that mean? Well as far as I understand this means looking at art history, film, and literature under a “critical eye,” ie, by studying different French philosophy. So for example there is a class (which is very good, but which I am not taking) on American Cinema seen through French Criticism. I am taking four classes ... read more

21/10/05 - Big rest day required today after too much driving. We strolled around Saint-Nectaire and its surroundings. The autumn colours are lovely, the trees are full of red, brown and orange leaves, the weather is also great, about 19 degrees. Autumn is also good from the point of view that the summer crowds have long gone and we virtually have the place to ourselves and the locals. This is a very interesting area, old volcanoes, lakes, beautiful farmland and old villages. We visited the 12th century church, plus the limestone Petrification Fountains (Fontaines Pétrifiantes des Saint-Nectaire, where artwork is created over a period of about 12 months by placing moulds on a ladder in a fountain of water which contains limestone deposits. 12 months later you have a limestone artwork or perhaps a limestone statue ... read more

For those of you just 'skimming' the blog text, I know you're out there, today's entry relies heavily on photos. In a departure from pretty much every norm, i'll look into my 'did not make the cut' folder here, and tell you a quick few stories about the photos that I did _not_ post. * I walked around 'The Marais' neighborhood in Paris by myself while Sherry took a nap. I snapped a few photos, had a beer, saw some art in a museum, saw pretty little square near Victor Hugo's home. * Sherry and I saw Sacre Couer as our first sight in Paris. It's a basillica, not sure how that's different from a cathedral, but it's white, and I think the name mean's White Heart. * We saw the Seine, that's the river through ... read more

I posted some more pictures on yesterdays blog. Marleen and I are figuring this out. The Cathare drive was beautiful yesterday: So many castles and history: Not many tourists, which made it nice: We enountered a few europeans wherever we went and Ivo always had a nice chat: Me also, as I tried to follow and listen: Ha! I bought grapes and apples. Also Marleen made us great sandwiches with cheese and baguettes: So we picniced in a couple of areas and just enjoyed the scenery: Ivo is a great travel guide: He has a head full of history and also just good stories: I felt the most touched at the old Roman church: So ancient. It was added onto in the 1100 century: The statues and art on the ceiling are not so clear in ... read more

All right, so I miraculously have developed a schedule that leaves me with Tuesdays and Thursdays off! This gives me two days off to explore this city without the crowds that gather on the weekends! Yippee. This does make my Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedules a bit long but it is definitely worth it! My first course is a writing workshop that is four hours a week where we focus on writing different types of essays in the French style and continue to learn the nuances we started to pick up in the Intensive Language Program. The professor for this course is a short blond woman who reminds me of Bette Midler, or my fairy godmother as it seems like she is going to wave her magic wand and everything is going to be better. She is ... read more

19/10/05 - Lorenza’s plan “drive as far as we can from Menaigo toward France as possible”. Sounded like a good plan at 11pm last night. This morning we took our planned route, which according to the Michelin map was a major highway, but not an Autostrada. Yeah, right! It took us three hours to travel about fifty kms, through so many industrial towns I lost count. Trucks, trucks, trucks and more bloody trucks! We decided the minor highway was a total joke and consulted our map, deciding to head for the nearest Autostrada to cover as much distance as possible. Now, I thought the Italians, being the descendants of the Romans who invented roads and highways, would have their act in order when it came to roads and signage. No way! There were road works everywhere, ... read more

This morning we returned to our favorite café (the correct one this time) for breakfast. We then took a stroll through the Place de Vogues (home to Victor Hugo) where we met a couple from Poland and took photos for one another. We had planned to pick up some sandwiches and treats for the train ride to Geneva at our favorite bakery on the island but found it to be closed at 12:15 PM! What?? There was no sign posting hours either. With only 10 minutes until the taxi to the station we weren’t sure what to do. I asked the shopkeeper next door what time the bakery would re-open and she explained they are closed on Thursdays and Fridays. However, she did direct us to another bakery around the corner where we were able to ... read more
