Hello Reader. Only thirty-five minutes after being dropped off by Claude at a gas station in France did the fifth patron of said station approach me. He had long, blonde hair, blue eyes and looked to be about twenty-four. He said in a thick French accent that he, too, was a traveler and would be more than happy to bring me to Lyon. Didier, which I had him spell and could not pronounce, informed me along the way that he was of Islamic faith, prefered black women, and only had three points left on his licence. As we moved closer to the city center, a voyage that took about an hour, my exposure to French swear words increased. Rough around the edges is the perfect way to describe him. He let me out at the main ... read more

This is where Niels went to college!! College is for the 1st degree, whichis diff than U.S. So Niels, this if for you. It was a lovely drive into the mountains. It's a ski area. Niels, you didn' t tell me you could ski!! One of the buildings is the dorm where the students stay. They come home on weekends. It's like a boarding school for middle school or high school students. Niels, I saw the big mountain that your fitness prof used to make you all climb every Monday morning. No wonder you have grande musculation! It was good for you, no? A lot of school kids were outside and heard us talking English. They said, "Allo!" and giggled. When I said, "Hi! How are you?" they burst into laughter and said, "Fine thank you" ... read more

Paris, "the city of love". It conjours images of wonderful and romantic goings-on... I don't know much about Paris. I went there to get some new climbing shoes and maybe have a bit of a look around. I will outline Paris in a nutshell and give a few key lessons to go with it. My arrival in Paris was a first introduction to an underground transport system. First Lesson: Keep hold of your ticket. If you don't have a ticket to leave at your end station, you may be unlucky enough to receive a 45 Euro fine! (Fortunately, it is a common enough error for first timers and if you go to the 'secret' underground office on Ligne 4 at the Les Halles station, they will happily refund your money...) Out of the underground and into ... read more

Half a day of warfare 15/11/05 - The Invalides Hospital in Paris was originally built at the request of Napoleon to ensure his injured troops were taken care of. On the same site are the Musée l’Armée and the Tomb of Napoleon. The Musée l’Armée consumed most of my day; it has an incredible display of everything to do with warfare, arms, uniforms and armour. You can imagine, it is definitely the kind of museum that I could spend most of my day in, but perhaps not Lorenza (so a few days alone in Paris have a positive side). There was a section dealing with WWII that I found incredibly interesting, mainly because as a resident of the southern hemisphere I know a fair amount about the dealings Australia had with Japan during that war, but ... read more

I looked back on my travel blog. It was fun and easy and captured the basics of my trip. Thanks for all the good feedback. I noticed something, so... To all my family, friends, students, and fellow Methodists: The culture in France is very different. They have what they refer to as "Table Wine". This is an inexpensive bottle that is opened and should be finished off with that meal. That is because it's not good to recork it. They serve several courses of food with each meal and refill their glass as they go. Sometimes the apertif is served with a sweeter wine than the main course or the cheese. I learned all of this as I was invited to share a table the French way. Marleen and Ivo are Belgique at heart and don't ... read more

This farmer and I ran into each other while I was out walking. He kept talking about George Bush. He wanted me to come home with him to do his dishes. I called Helena over to translate! I told her to tell him that in America, the men do the dishes. He gave me a great toothless laugh. Jean-Marie was doing funny things after an evening of dinner and a lot of wine. Okay Mark, I took this pic so you could make me a prayer stool. I put my foot in there so you could get a context. This is too cool. On the 1st day at Beatitudes, I told Erica that I wanted to wear a table cloth to the chapel. More private for prayer etc: She cracked up and said basically NO WAY! ... read more

Just pics here of our trip to castel ruins from 1100. The walk was really steep and we had to rest on when we got up there. Cool to imagine what it was like to live there. You could see the old windows, fireplaces, etc. Of course Ivo knew all the history! It was a great sunny day. We lay down near the top for a while and just enjoyed the afternoon. Marleen and I went runnin around the castle together while Ivo sat on the mountainside. What a great girlfriend she is. We've had too too much fun.... read more

What an amzing city this was. A beautiful spot with buildings from the middle ages. Im having the photos developed right now so I can post them. Also more from castles, Niels school nearby, snow in the Pyrenees, Andorra and a ton of other things. Basically Ive been too busy to post. Its like a mad dash to finish out my 5th (and final) week in France. The week in Cordes Sur Ciel was a week that will go down as one of the best weeks of my life. No competition. It was like something from a well written book. I think I knew that when I felt drawn to go there. In other news, dinner in Chris apartment was an absolute blast! "Allo! Bon!" She is a bundle of energy and an excellent cook. Plus ... read more

OK so Evi and I flew from Basel to Nice on EasyJet, 100 Swiss Francs round trip per person ($75), a 50 minute flight (compared with 250 Francs and 8 hours by train). We went to visit Howie's high school friend, Terri Isaacman from Harrisburg, who lives with her husband Brian in a house in Trans-En-Provence, which serves also as a bed and breakfast, about 30 miles north of San Tropez. The weather was pleasant and warm, around 21 degrees centigrade each day (70 Fahrenheit). We spent one day in Nice, had a bus tour to see the beautiful city, then met Terri and Brian at the world famous Hotel Negresco before driving one hour west to their home. We visited small and old towns, drove to the Gorge du Verdun, France's version of the Grand ... read more

My second last evening in Niedermorschwihr was an enjoyable occasion. Bernard (Jean & Beatrice’s friend), his wife Eliane, daughter Miriam (plus her boyfriend, who’s name escapes me - could be Franz?), joined Jean, Beatrice, Ella-Pauline, Nellie and myself for dinner. It was good to share a meal and drinks with them before I departed Niedermorschwihr as they have all been so friendly to Lorenza and me on our two visits to Alsace. Miriam is the president of the local organization responsible for raising funds to maintain and restore the church tower. She is very passionate about her role and cause. She spoke for sometime about the different fund raising projects they had and were trying. It is good to see that someone young is interested in maintaining the history of her birthplace. Bernard got scolded a ... read more
