Matt: Bonjour! One of the more annoying things about living and working in London is working in London - it really gets in the way of the living! With just six weeks of annual leave, seven public holidays and ten “sick days”, any time away work cannot be wasted! And so it was that just ten hours after finishing work, Ed and I lumbered into a cab at 5.30 in the morning bound for Heathrow and Paris… The night before, we had taken my dad (who had been staying with us for a few days on the way back to Oz from Ireland) out for Indian and a couple of drinks which meant that we hadn’t had a chance to pack. This meant that our 5.30am departure was preceded by a 4.30am alarm, three presses of ... read more

We made the most of the European winter by spending Christmas and our 3rd wedding anniversary snowboarding in Bernex, France. A great little resort. And in February Dave headed back into the Alps for a "Men's Quest for Greatness" weekend in St Moritz, Switzerland. ... read more

We got up early to leave our cottage and head to Paris and again to find some snow falling. It made for a treacherous first 45 minutes of our drive, but then we left the snow. We were happy to reach the Marriott vacation club near Disneyland Paris and able to get into our room. The modern unit was a marked change from the quaint cottage! Our unit is a two bedroom townhome on two floors with two and a half baths. They look new and although more "American" have French furnishings. We regrouped and headed to the Disney property and the train station to go into Paris. After parking at the Disney village, we couldn’t pass up lunch at Planet Hollywood before taking the train. After lunch and a 40 min train ride, we exited ... read more

Today the schedule was shorter so we slept in a bit to discover a dusting of snow at the cottage. It was very pretty. There’s a photo of the master chef cooking up some pancakes for breakfast. Our final destination in Normandy was the Caen Peace Museum. It was an excellent museum with a good mix of films and displays. We especially enjoyed the films about the Battle of Britain, D-Day and the Normandy campaign. There was an interesting new exhibit with letters home from soldiers from both sides of the Normandy conflict. It was interesting to read the German soldiers’ letters and see their view of the landings. We were in need of a light dinner before heading back to the cottage. We walked a bit and a couple of us grabbed a few paninis, ... read more

We headed out very early this morning for our drive to Mt St. Michel, the most popular tourist destination in France we were told. We arrived early before the crowds and were able to enjoy the peace and quiet of the 10th century Abbey. We toured a few of the small museums, but the best part was touring the Abbey itself. We had some audio guides to help explain the tour. The site is quite impressive, especially while approaching by car. Unfortunately the tide was out so we were not able to experience Mt. St. Michel surrounded by water, but it was still breathtaking. We learned that it is very dangerous to walk around the castle in the sand as there is “quicksand” that continues to claim lives each year. We had a nice lunch overlooking ... read more

I have all my pictures on my computer now...that's three nights of my life I'll never get back. So far, I've only got pictures on for the time I spent in Paris, but I'm working on the rest. Mx Paris was nice for Christmas. Even my McDonald's McChicken meal was nice. Suffice it to say that not a whole lot was actually open. :-) I tried a whole lot to find a brasserie or patisserie or boulangerie or boucherie or anything ending in -erie for food, but eventually I had to give up and just have McDonald's for lunch. The stomach dictated that decision. I took the Eurostar from London to Paris and it took just under three hours to get there. Then I followed the directions that the hostel provided...and got lost. Not really lost, ... read more

How cool is Paris? My hostel was not fabulous...but I was prepared for that. Imagine a bed that in which was cut a large person shaped hole and then that´s where you slept--in the hole! And to top it off, I took the absolute coldest shower ever! There was no hot water whatsoever!!!!! Needless to say, the shower did not last long and I am feeling really disgusting today after having properly showered for the last time on Saturday morning. (Aren´t you glad you aren´t travelling with me?) Paris is a very nice city and it is very easy to get around. I travelled all over the place both using the metro and walking (ankle is feeling much better, although not 100% yet). I will post pictures in a blog when I get back and I ... read more
