The final stop of our 6-day mini adventure was Lille, in NE France, close to the Belgian border. I remember learning about Lille at primary school - I have this vivid memory of looking for it on a school map of France (weird or what?) and I remember learning that the car industry was big in the area. Amazing what kind of information your brain retains, as what use could Lille be to a 10-year-old in Greece? I certainly hadn't imagined then that 20 years later I'd be visiting in person, and I was rather excited to be going. About time the spot on the map became a real, live city. We left Aachen around 2 pm for Brussels, from where we were due to catch the 17:01 Eurostar to Lille. We only had 1.5 hours ... read more

Well life in Paris continues on quite splendidly. I had a “midterm” last week along with a paper and other work that seem to be piling up on me. From time to time this becomes too overwhelming and I don’t know what to do so I go see movies. I saw “Harry Potter” again on opening night here, which was quite a thrill! The theater was huge and on the Champs Elysées. The Champs Elysées is all decorated right now and every tree is strung with lights and so that in and of its self was great. And then the movie was even better with French subtitles! It was funny to watch and hear the French people respond to the French characters who are in this movie. They all clapped and whooped and hollered when it ... read more

Great day today...the sun was out, the temp warmed up a little and I was out of the hotel by 9am. Went to the Musee d' Orsay today. This is a great museum with a lot of impressionism painting and awesome sculptures all laid out in a beautiful building which used to be a train station. One of the amazing things is that most all the paitings are within arms length. We're talking Monets, Manet's, Renoir's, Van Gogh's, Cezanne's, Degas....etc...all within a foot away and nothing to stop someone from just ripping them from the wall. Sure, you'd spend some time in jail, but if you really had a wild hair and wanted to, this would be the place to go on a rampage. And they let you take all the pictures you want without using ... read more

Well well well... Where to start on Paris? Im just going to put it out there. Paris was the most filthiest, rudest and downright disgustingest place I have ever been to in my life. Lauren and I are in total agreeance of this. People spit everywhere, pee on the streets, accost you for money or are just plain rude to you. It seems over here to say 'pardon' once you've already shouldercharged someone is perfectly acceptable. I honestly am still in shock that Jennifer Hawkins had said that Paris is her favourite place to go - maybe she just never leaves her 5 star hotel? All I can say is no wonder Paris didn't get the 2012 Olympics. Best decision the IOC ever made!! Well since we had such a shit time in Paris I will ... read more

Caught the subway and went to the Louve today. When they say you need a full day for this one, they mean it. The Louve is this huge...I mean really huge Museum. It covers blocks and blocks of Paris real estate. With 4 levels to get lost on, there's really no way to even sprint through the place in one day. The building itself is a work of art and wonder.... Mostly, I wondered where the hell I was. The painting of the Mona Lisa is most popular as you see small directions pointing to her location through the various buildings. She's bigger than a bread box but not by much. Considered the most popular painting in the world, the entire painting is no larger than 1 foot and a half wide by about 2 and ... read more

Funniest bits/memories • The beginning - Our first accommodation, in the car park! And coming in after nights out, trying, hopelessly, to be quiet. • Me and Pru stealing the fat nannys food and them eventually hiding their extensive supplies in a locked suitcase. • Playing arrogance with Tim and him saving me! • Nearly getting sacked in my first week. • Me and Chaz very first learning to board on that sodding green run. And throwing our boards off the side in the end. And walking. • Joe continuing our lessons with making us so little ducks all the way down the slopes. • Moving to our new chalet place - Sharing a room with Sophie, and having Pru and Chaz upstairs. • Joe destroying our microwave there. • Climbing through the window of our ... read more

After getting over the fact we had to pay £14.50 (Thats nearly $40 for you aussies) for a 30 minute train to Stansted Airport we boarded our Ryan Air flight to Tours in France. Upon arrival we realised that we had indeed got more than we bargained for. It seems french people really do speak french. And we need to get one thing clear for the frenchies- WE ARE NOT AMERICAN Bonjour, Parle vous anglais? Our new catchphrase. Perhaps the most important words we could ever learn. However with a little bit of perseverance, a lot of blank looks, and arm movements that look a lot like a chicken we tended to get what we wanted, where we wanted and also have a few laughs. After getting over the language barrier, we have learnt a lot ... read more

Having returned from a long (in kilometres) but short (in time) trip from southern France to Mauritania I thought I'd better sit down and describe it! I am a 'regular' on the Thorn Tree, Lonely Planet's forum (apologies to travelblog!!) and needed 'somewhere' to escape to after a long year of work. Somewhere cheap & warmer than southern France is at Christmas!!! I started making arrangements for another independant jaunt then decided, for a change seeing as it was over Christmas, to see if 'someone' out there wanted to join me on my trip south. Lo & behold I found a poster on the Thorn Tree who might be interested, and sent this: Saw your TT posting - Lonely Planet forum. I'm in France, I live near Carcassonne and am getting the bus from here to ... read more

Fullständigt propfullt med folk varje ... read more
