Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Nice July 27th 2006

The sleeper train wasn't so sleepy, i was freezing through the most of it. Little Lauras feet even had the goose bumps! Nice is an exciting town with a different looking street everywhere you turn. We spent the day walking around finding our selves amongst tiny streets that tower over you in all sorts of different colours. Stunning! We decided that it would be a good idea to look at the museum of modern art, which is situated at the end of this long garden in the centre of the city. We saw Cristo (the guy that wraps things up), Warhol, Ives Klein and lots of other stunning pieces of art that satisfyed our eyes. At the top of the museum is a balcony where you can see the whole of Nice, beautiful indeed. We walked ... read more

Geo: 43.341, 6.7898Ate breaky at hotel. Decent croissant, but I've yet to have an incredible one like those in Paris. It was my first time using sheets in a week last night. It gets very humid in the basement but does get cold late at night.Walked down Promenade des Anglais towards the Chateau. Nice views at the top, but over-rated (and hot!) Back down to Vieux Ville. Saw a restaurant that had hoses embedded in their patio umbrellas. Every so often they spray a mist on the patrons. Nice idea for a hot place like this. Just found out that Placebo was in town last night. Gaaahhh! If I would´ve known ... of course, who knows if I could´ve gotten a ticket. Snacked on a tarte blette. Not bad, but was disappointed as I thought it ... read more

Europe » France » Languedoc-Roussillon » Carcassonne July 26th 2006

Our timing couldn't have been worse for cycling in the south of France. Record heat, up to 35 C today, I am told. Today was a day off and we went to Carsaconne in the morning by train. By the time we left at noon, we were melting and the crowds were just beginning to arrive. I had a 2 hour nap this afternoon and then a massage by the massage therapist for the Kiwi team that trains here. Monday, we went into the foothills of the Pyrennes. The initial ride into the foothills was still relatively cool. The greenery, the lovely roads, the company all made for a delightful start of the day. Then Ruth, Mary Anne and 2 others headed down along a river while yours truly decided to challenge a 10-11% grade. It ... read more

Europe » France » Languedoc-Roussillon » Perpignan July 26th 2006

we arrived in perpignan late last night on another train packed with backpackers. i cannot stress how much i dislike the spanish trains, there are not enough of them, they break down (like the one last night), they are just rubbish. however when they do work. its wonderful. watching the rocky mountains suddenly flourish into greenland from castellon to barcelona was just such a stunning sight. today we have planned our route for the following days and cleaned all our clothes. perpignan is a cute town with interesting shops and sites, i like it. Emily was lovely for letting us stay last night. much appreciation. she has the cutest cat called cookie. we bought her a bag of sweets from this amazing sweet store in town. the girl that owned it looked exactly like Melody. Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Nice July 26th 2006

Geo: 43.341, 6.7898Had a crappy hostel breakfast and off to the train station. Went through a market - mostly a local thing for day to day needs, but also a cool food section. Bought a cheap croissant - crap! Like a glorified bun. Should've went for the pricier one. They had rotisserie chickens going ... looked amazing! Sausages too ... they kept potatoes and onions cooking at the bottom to catch all the juices. Smelled heavenly. Got to Marseille - wanted to ditch my backpack and walk around but couldn't find a place for it. Still walked a bit, but not as much as I wanted to. Looks neat - maybe will stop here next year. Here´s a shot of the steps from the train station: And what did I see on these steps ... ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris July 25th 2006

To be perfectly honest, Paris is not one of my more favorite places. Last time I was there, it was so dirty. But I must say, Paris has done some work. It was very clean and we had a great time seeing all there is to see in the City of Lights. What can I say about Paris? For those that have been, you know. You know how difficult it can be to get around on one of the most confusing metros I've ever been on. You know how difficult people can be if you dont 'parlay France'. You know how scortching hot it gets in the summertime. And most of all, if you've been there, you know how ridiculously crowded it gets during the tourist season. Our accomidations were well outside of the city center ... read more

Europe » France » Centre » Dormans July 25th 2006

Dormans can be reached, if you leave the overcrowded center of Reims using the D980 direction Paris. There you will find the peace you seek and a wounderful view over the valley of the Marne. A small camping site near the river gives a cheap ability to stay. Dormans has a small nice old church, a French-German war cemetry and the french memorial of the "wonder of the marne" from 1914. The memorial widely visible on a hill southern to the village is a honorous building. Constructed like a Church it reminds of the past cruelty of the war. For only 1 € you can climb up the steps of the memorial and have the greatest view over a valley I've ever seen! ... read more

Europe » France » Brittany July 25th 2006

We spent 3 days at St.Brieuc, Marion's maternal grandparents' place, right on the coast of Brittany. Getting there was quite simple using Frances tolled highways part of the time. Driving along the North-western regions along the coast with a bit of atlantic breeze proved to be a blessing. It was about 10 degrees cooler then the rest of France, which was going through a heatwave. Apparently France takes the heatwave so seriously that all working people are required by law to donate all their earnings from one work day of the year towards the costs of easing and remedying heatwave conditions, which causes the death of 10s of victims every year, usually older people living in bad conditions, etc. Marion's sister Pascal, her husband Patrick and their daughter Briana were also at Marion's grandparents', so we ... read more
