A pretty good way to sum up today. Met my group this morning. Sunday is the big market day and all of the local vendors were set up selling all kinds of things. We took a boat ride across the lake and WOW. The mountains the clear lake the whole thing was unbelievable. We rode today about 35 miles. The riding is awesome. There are 8 people in our group with two guides. Tomorrow we will do our first Tour climb... read more

And suddenly, it was 18000 years ago. I found myself standing in a large open cavern with the most vivid and amazing cave paintings I have ever seen. When I had heard and read about Lascaux I imagined that it would be much like the other prehistoric paintings I had seen - I could not have been more wrong. The Lascaux caves are located in South-central France, not far from Toulouse. They hold a collection of paintings that date back to around 18000 years ago (sorry to those of you who still think the planet is only 7000 years old.) Lascaux is unique for a number of reasons - 2 of which are directly related to the quality of the paintings after so many years: 1) The cave was sealed over by receding ice sheets at ... read more

It's true that you never forget how to ride a bike, but I believe it's the starting and stopping that gets really rusty. Then you remember how sore you are getting back on that bike seat. Oh both of us were longing for one of those gel seat covers. Amie took some painkillers before going to bed that night. We cycled as a massive group of 14 for the first few miles so that our tour leader could see how we adapted to our bikes. I think it was for pure entertainment, watching us wobble our way through bumpy paths and up hills. But I was happy to stay in a group due to my poor map-reading skills. It took a while to get used to balancing and pedaling and not running into anything...forget trying to ... read more

After an exhausting flight we have finally arrived in Paris. The cab ride to our Hotel was an adventure! The driver had one foot on the gas pedal and the other on the brake and we were off! The hotel we got in Paris, the Hotel Foch, is right on Embassy row. It's 6 floors high but only two rooms wide, the one person elevator has a maximum capacity of 225 kilos! But it is cozy. Well it's 6:20 now, going to freshen up then go for a walk, I noticed we past the Arch de Triumph only a few blocks from our hotel, then find somewhere to eat then find that Tower that is supposed to be famous or something, heard it is something to see at night. Ciao for now.... read more

Just lost a MASSIVE group email, with details of my past two months and I´ll be buggered if I'm going to write it again! I could cry. Anyway, no time to sulk ... In short, I´ve been through Ukraine, Budapest, England, Amsterdam, France and have now found myelf in Spain. Anyone have any grand suggestions about what I should do here or have any friends here for me to say hello to? I'm waiting on my Estonian passport to come through, so will just continue to travel until it does. I´m thinking about northern Africa, too. Briefly, Ukraine finished with a trip to the Carpathian mountains with a Ukrainian lad, his Russian mate and their would-be botanist Canadian friend. They were intent on meditating at the most inconvenient times, Uncle Pete was mistaken for Steve Irwin ... read more

We arrived at 6:45am in Paris, had to switch train stations and hopped onto another train to a small town called Montrichard. So small, that the lady at the ticket window had never heard of it - but big enought that it did have a bank machine :) Our plan was to check-in and take a nap as soon as we got there, as we didn't have to meet our cycling tour group until 6pm. When we got to Monrichard and were wandering around looking for our hotel, Angele all of a sudden got this really excited look on her exhausted face (we had been travelling for about 17hrs at this point) She was pointing to a beautiful building with lux furniture in the lobby area and said "Wow, thats our hotel? Its really nice." When ... read more

I got up early for the 4 hour train trip to Annecy today. It was amazing to see the very crowded train station. The trip took almost 5 hours. I crashed pretty hard when I arrived here. Oddly enough, I did not sleep much that night. Must be the nerves. First day of riding is tomorrow. The town is pretty crowded had to get a room about ten minutes away. I found out later they were having a big festival this weekend. They had a huge fireworks display down on the lake. I found this out the next day. That must have been what all that noise was. ... read more

I decided to do the tourist thing today. I popped in my ipod and walked to the Eiffel Tower. It was quite the hike, but well worth it. The amount of people around it was staggering. I hopped on a tourist bus and rode around to the major tourist sites in Paris. It was pretty cool to see all the stuff you only see in magazines or the movies. I have got to give it up for the cyclists of Paris. These people were riding some old school bikes and riding in traffic that would scare me if I were driving. I went back down to the Champs Elysee to see the Eiffel tower and other landmarks lit up at night. It was a good way to end my stay in Paris... read more
