Mum and I were off to through France for a week taking in Paris, Chamonix in the Alps and finally onto Nice in the French Riviera. We started in Paris and had three nights at Le Regent in Montmartre where Liani, Heath, Luke and I had stayed on an earlier trip. The city of Paris is beautiful, there is something so charming and romantic about the city of lights. On the first day we decided to take in the open top bus tour to give Mum an overall view of the city. Although I had been there before, I saw lots more of different parts of the city on the bus tour. After this we rode the tram back to Montmartre and climbed the many steps up to Sacre Coer. There was a mass taking place ... read more

Today was our "long" cycle. We were cycling 54miles to get to our next city, Azay De Rideau. Despite its distance, it ended up being the most enjoyable ride yet. Another beautiful sunny day, by midday the sun was burning our backs. Luckily large parts of our trail were through forest. Our group of 13 split up into two groups and we cycled in a group of 7 (the slower of the groups). We stopped for coffee in a pub full of locals in one of the villages along the way. Then lunch was at a campsite along a relaxing little river. I really cant do justice to how beautiful all these towns and villages we passed are. They decorate all their public areas with colorful flowers, and the people are so lovely! Very, very different ... read more

Monday 7th August Carcassonne to Nr Istres Had intended stopping in Arles, but looked too busy and everyday looking on a brief view so we stopped only to top up with provisions at the hypermarket and then sped on. Found a remote Dutch run site in a pretty location by a huge lake. The Dutch woman running the site was very friendly gave us a free coffee whilst filling in the paperwork. The site was so busy that she could offer us only two nights. The campsite is 95% Dutch occupied and very laid back. The wind (presumably the Mistral ?) was blowing incredibly strongly and incessantly without a single cloud in the sky. The camp is isolated with no shops nearby. It is surrounded by open maquis which was incredibly dry. Tuesday 8th Nr Istres ... read more

Made for walking Trying to plan a walk in the countryside was a daunting task when I first went on a holiday to France some years ago, as the landscape is criss-crossed by a myriad of hunting tracks, ancient foot and wagon routes and forest access paths. There was a network of Grand Randonees - long-distance, linear footpaths distinctively signed by red-and-white stripes - but these were of little help if you wanted to explore a local area on foot. In recent years, however, the French have really taken to rambling and today you can visit a Tourist Information centre in almost any area and leave with armfuls of free leaflets detailing walks around the vicinity. What’s more, these are usually really well way-marked, come in a variety of lengths and often include items of local ... read more

It was a relocation day where we cycle to the next city we will be staying at, and our belongings get shuttled there by van (yay! No carrying backpacks!) It was a gorgous day and we cycled along the river Cher for most of it. About an hour out of Montrichard we came to Chateau Chenonceau. I'd heard all about the chateaus of the Loire Valley, but it still surprised me how stunning they are. This one had a garden that could compete, maybe even beat, Versaille. It said on the sign in french that there was a student discout for students under 26years old. Mark, a mature student, tried to get a discount anyways with his international student card. But with the language barrier and all, the ticket guy sold him an adult ticket ... read more

so i had to move to a new apartment again. i packed all my thing, and it took two trips half way across the city (changing trains once each way), but i'm all settled. And the view. Its like a postcard. I can see the Eiffel Tower every time I'm in the kitchen, and if i'm in the second bedroom I can see that, plus the sacre coeur. and thats just the start. The paris skyline is way prettier than Edmontons...but i'm biased. I'm in love with the Eiffel Tower. Photos really don't do it justice! Yesterday was the first Sunday of August, which to you may mean nothing, but in Paris, it means every museum is free for the entire day. It also means there is a four hour wait in every linem at every ... read more

No sleep on the plane left us somewhat frazzled but yet we still managed. After freshening up at the hotel we were off. First off we walked to the Arche de Triomphe and climbed up to the top, wow, our legs felt like jelly! We then took the RER (the underground train) to the Eiffel Tower. Soaking our feet in the reflective pools then waiting in line to take elevator to the very top, breathtaking! After good nights sleep we are off to the airport and to Rome.... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Annecy August 7th 2006

Another gorgeous day and spectacular riding. Nearly every place we climbed you could look back to see Lake Annecy. We did a climb before lunch (great climb). We explored Annecy for lunch and then took off for the Forclaz. The climb is 11k (6-7 miles) long. It was pretty good until 3 k from the summit. It was pretty steep there. The bad part we went up the easier side. The tour uses the other side which we went down. The steepest parts were 13-14%. It is 1157 meters at the summit. Tomorrow is the Col de Galibier. It is over 2400 meters at the summit. ... read more
