Bonjour! Back in France again. This time... the French Riviera!!! Oh baby! I was finally able to add pics to previous posts!! woohoo! :) Unfortunately I havnt taken many pics yet today so I only have this one of a cathedral we found just walking down the street. Not sure of the name of it or its history but its gorgeous! Right, so took the train today from Antibes where we are staying into Nice. Gosh I looove this place! Weather is wicked (we have had excellent weather all this trip so far, thank goodness!) and the shopping is wonderful!!! Right now I'm addicted to these genie pants that everyone is wearing over here. I've already bought 3 so no more! Also got a nice dress, top and a pretty scarf. Didn't get here until a ... read more

Our next stop was a camp site in Roquebrune Sur Argens near Frejus where Mitch from the PO ( a mate of petes from work) was staying for 3 weeks. Found the site ok and got set up, then went to the pool to see the NO SHORTS sign again oh no!!! But luckily they don't seem to care here thank god. Saw Chris and family sat about 2 people away from us after about 2 hours of sun bathing so went to surprise him. Found a really nice little beach cove the next day but didn't realise there were jelly fish everywhere so couldn't cool down. On our last full day we had a text from our Kiwi cling ons to say they were in Frejus looking for a camp site, we let them pitch ... read more

We waved goodbye to our English friends being shuttled off in taxis to catch the Eurostar home. We ended up sharing a taxi with the Canadian couple also going to the train station. We were all heading to Tours where they would be picking up a car and us looking for the nights accommodation. We found a one star hotel but could not check in until 2:30pm, 4 hrs to kill. So we wandered the city. They have a beautiful gothic cathedral but at this point I couldn't tell you which was which, there are so many in Europe! We then wandered to the center of town and decided it would be ok to spoil ourselves one last time with fine french food. We decided to go for crepes. I had a goat cheese crepe of ... read more

While my original intent was to sleep the entire way from Newark to Paris, I had the pleasure of sitting next to a charming, and friendly, Frenchman. I asked him what I should do with my layover in Paris. He insisted that I NOT stay in the airport. So, I asked him if he knew the easiest route to the most interesting sites (I had read that the French love to give directions). Well, that sure worked. He went into the overhead for a pen from his bag and we called for paper from the flight attendant. He took the time to draw me a fairly detailed map of the area between the Louvre and the Arc de Triumphe (including the main streets, parks, and river). He went on to draw me a map of Paris, ... read more

Sadly, many bugs had past during many a coughing fit while pedaling about. I think the two that top my list are the above butterfly and a lizard. Their passing was not on the same day. But I did have a butterfly collide with my nose and well, noses come with nostrils. I was slighty horrified by the event as I sputtered for a bit. On another day, we were cycling in a row, I was last with Amie right infront of me. She and I saw the lizard's attempt to cross the roadway, it missed a car then hesitated as Amie zoomed by. It didn't run fast enough to make it before I came along, I couldn't predict where it was trying to go...and with an inevitable 'squish'...I looked behind and saw nothing scampering away. ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » La Grave August 11th 2006

Eight members of out group got up early and took the lift up to the top of le meije this morning. Le meije is the a mountain that tops out at 10,000 feet. The top of the mountain is covered by a glacier. WOW!!! The views from the top were amazing. If you are ever in La Grave spend the 22 euro to go to the top and go inside the ice cave. The cave was full of ice carvings. It is still hard to believe that in August there is that much ice somewhere. A huge difference from North Carolina. That was a great way to end our trip. We left our guides in La Grave and a bus took us to Grenoble. Most of our group hopped on trains to leave. I am spending ... read more

Our next stop was Cagnes Sur Mer near Nice. Found a camp site about 4 km from the beach but never actually made it there. We discovered a problem with the camp site though, men are not allowed to where shorts in the pool (only speedo,s). As you can probably guess this didn,t go down well. Met a couple from New Zealand (nathan + Sarah) who were having issues with the speedo thing too. It nearly made us leave the camp site but Kez and Sarah thought they might be able to get the lads in Speedos and if not maybe a bikini.................it didnt work though not even after a few vodkas Will update some more soon xx... read more

I think I'm finally used to these darnded bike seats. It helped to switch bikes with Amie a few days ago. Apparently my legs are longer out of the two of us. Today the path was quiet but hilly (or undulating if you prefer). Our first coffee stop was overlooking the Loire River. Just down from here was a set of pirate ships. Okay, maybe not ships that sail up and down the Loire pirating all tourists that venture near the waters edge, but these were old wooden ships with masts. A person with a wooden leg and a parrot would've completed the picture well :) On we cycled to a chateau in Usse where we took pictures from afar. Then off went Susan into the field of dying sunflowers hunting around for one living one. ... read more

So, back to Paris. My favourite city. (at that point anyway) Twice in a one year period. It's a bless'ed life I lead. Anyway, what I forgot to mention in my previous blog was that I got on to the train to Paris without any idea where I'd be staying that night. This was the first time I had undertaken such a thing, and was pretty stressed out about it. Fortunately, the Melbourne girl I sat next to was in exactly the same situation as I was. She too had no place to stay, and if possible, was in any even more disorganised state than I was. We managed to sort ourselves out pretty quickly once we arrived at the Gare du Nord, and headed off to our hostel in the Latin Quarter. I spent the ... read more
