Sorry for the obscure title, but it kept popping into my head as i wandered around Brugge, smelling all the waffles. Its from Shrek if anyone was wondering. Brugge was an interesting town, full of lots of different smells...not all good let me assure you. There was a big town square and as we were in Belgium I thought it pertinent to go to a chocolate museum. Found out about the history of chocolate and all that jazz, saw some wicked chocolate sculptures but i was waiting for the end. We watched a chocolatier make some chocolates and then we got to taste them..yum! The hostel we stayed at was pretty ordinary with the toilest being down a flight of stairs and through the bar....so good luck to you if had to use the bathroom when ... read more

Geo: 44.0964, 4.45083Up early to catch a train. Breakfast was included - cereal/milk, cake w/ butter and crappy watery juice. Slept on train to Arles, did nothing else. Went to Musee Reattu (art) - not very good; did not understand the French descriptions so there was no historical context for me. Also too hot to concentrate.Had a picnic by the amphitheatre - assorted herb cheeses, pate, and bread. Tasty and cheap, but too rich and got a little gross at the end. Too cheap to buy tomatoes - would've made it much more enjoyable. Still beats McDonald's any day! It was a great place for a picnic - shady with music (some "medieval" band). Like something from Robin Hood. The heat is inhumane. I'm glad I'm not wearing any pants. Literally! Nothing but a wife beater ... read more

After San Sebastian i needed a rest day, so my time to see things in Paris was a bit limited. Nonetheless i still managed to go to Versailles which was spectacular. We went on Bastille Day, after watching some parades. The sheer luxury of the place is astounding and even after all the royal palaces i have been to, this one takes the cake. The gardens were absolutely beautiful in a very tame and manicured way, i could definitely imagine Jamie and Claire wandering through them Mum. I also managed to get in a show at the famous or infamous, im not sure, Moulin Rouge. Very expensive but worth it in my books. We had really good seats and sat and drank champagne, not sparkling wine and watched some amazing things. I also took a bike ... read more

I spent the day looking for some books and decided to go check out the book store under the Louve. On my way there I took a side street that was in the shade and stumbled upon a bunch of stores with two of my favorite things: plants and pets! It was just like Istanbul where all the same store types were on the same block. I had a lot to get done this day since I was leaving early the next morning, but I took a quick stop in the pet store because I was curious what type of pets they would have in France. My heart melted as I walked in and saw about 10 - 15 different puppies to choose from. They were all SO cute . . . come on, they’re puppies! ... read more

Avg. temp: 38 I arrived to the hostel in the morning around 10am. In the reception, I met Ian and Carly. They are both from Canada. I spent the next few days with them. Ian is a very smart guy. He created a method to predict the stock market. I learnt alot from him. Carly moved to Montreal for school and her parents live in vancouver. We hung out together in the second day. We went to a small museum and had lunch in a park. Then we decided to go to a mall (similar to the Bay). Since it is VERY hot outside (38). We spent the afternoon there. We enjoy the A/C and good and cheap wine. yeah that place has a good cafeteria in there. The price is very reasonable and fresh. I ... read more

Geo: 43.341, 2.46664Less than 2 hours sleep. Returned from Jazz fest at 2:30 AM and others returned even later (kept me up). Changed trains in Hendaye. Awesome french pastries ... ham and cheese croissant, chocolatine , and a raisin bun. How many french pastries can I eat before butter oozes out of my pores???Speaking french has been challenging. What little I knew has been long forgotten. Met an old French lady on the train that speaks Spanish.I thought it would be cooler in France, but it's experiencing a heat wave with temps in the high 30's. Grabbed a meat pie walking to the old part of Carcassonne from the train station. Bought some very expensive cookies there (3€ for 4). The bad part? Not very good. Ultra touristy here, very pricey. It's like a mix of ... read more

Venice - Milan - Geneva - Lyon - Paris - Laval (Train) 23 July The French will carry their baguettes with such abandon. They will buy their one metre long stick of baked fresh bread on their way home from work. You will see it tucked under the arm of a commuter like an umbrella on a wet day; and at the ready to beat off the competition for that seat on the train. Or you might spot them precariously balanced in the backpack of a cyclist where it will smite any insects unlucky enough to be in the path of the baguette as it swathes through the air behind the rider. The stick can hold open the door allowing one to load shopping bags inside and then keep out the draught from under that door ... read more

So my first day in Paris was really spent sleeping in and recovering from my big London weekend. That said i did get up and go for a walk around my area Kellermann in Southern Paris. I soon discovered that it was not really a tourist destination. Everyone staying at my hostel was french as were the staff and i had my first experience of ill communication. I wandered into a nearby park and when asking two local boys whether i could drink the water they were really quite surprised and intrigued to meet someone who spoke english! I should also note some very sad news at this point, two days ago (as at writing) in Berlin my mp3 player was stolen out of my room along with my headphones and my only copies of all ... read more
