We have been travelling now for several weeks in France. It is a country with such diversity and we are sometimes surprised by the differences after as little as two hours in the car. I hope these photos do some of it justice. Our journey in France began in Menton on the French Riviera where we learnt if you are not careful on the roads you can end up back in Italy 3 times in one day! Then we headed to the Luberon in Provence. And the lavender was just starting to bloom! Our next stop was in Peycelsi one of the Bastide towns in the SW. Close to Carcassonne. Then on to Beynac in the Dordogne where we spent time with my nephew and his wife. I love the Dordogne, great food, if you like ... read more

The Lemon Festival goes on for three weeks in February and early March, and every Sunday afternoon there is a parade or “corso” to use the local name. On the Thursday of the final week there is also a night-time parade. What sort of parades are they? … in recent years a number of the sponsors who create static displays like those shown in my previous article have also commissioned floats using the same principles of construction. Each float weighs between three and four tonnes, because of their steel and mesh frameworks, riders, and the sheer weight of the citrus fruit. I was able to attend a 2008 afternoon parade, which also featured clowns, mediaeval re-enactors, dancing girls and marching bands from around the world: it lasted about an hour and forty minutes. For an excellent ... read more

Boasting 300 sunny days per year, Menton is a small town of about 30,000 on the French Riviera right at the Italian border. Surrounded by 1200m (3800+ ft) foothills, it is shielded from snow and the frigid winds blowing off the Alps. Consequently, it has a micro-climate making it the warmest town in all France, where lemons and later other citrus fruits have been grown since the 1400s. For more information go to http://www.thegoodlifefrance.com/menton-lemon-festival-2/. Beginning in the 1930s as a tiny imitation of the much larger Carnaval de Nice, the Lemon Festival has grown into the second most important event on the French Riviera, with over a quarter million visitors annually. There is a new theme every year: for example “The Sea”, “Transportation”, “Islands” “India”, and many others. For three weeks duri... read more

Even though we started off the day at the col and the forecast called for rain developing in the morning, I opted to start with a 4km climb up to the Circuit de l'Authion, a 9 km loop that was said to offer magnificent 360 degree views. True enough, once I reached the start of the loop I could see the Mediterranean, but the road then descended and the clouds had already started to form, so I cut short my investigation and proceeded down what is purported to be one the top driving roads in the world. Unfortunately, there were spots when the pavement was not very cycle-friendly - particularly before Molinet - but where conditions were better, the descent was a fun way to start the day. Once at Sospel I elected to take the ... read more

Thanks in large part to a generous donation to the University of Chicago Paris abroad program, a group of two dozen students (twelve from the University of Chicago and the rest from Sciences Po in Paris) were graciously invited to accompany Professor Lisa Wedeen in her lecture to the south of France, for an overnight stay in Menton- a beautiful town nestled in the sands of the Mediterranean, by the edge of Italy. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the students and program director of Sciences Po in Menton. From the many experiences I have had while abroad in Paris, I must say spending time in Menton was the most wonderful adventure of all. The view from Sciences Po was completely breathtaking. Not only were the facilities new, the reception room where we were hosted ... read more

Geo: 43.7788, 7.50567 GUN 16 günlerden PAZAR Zorlu Eze tırmanışını geride bırakarak, ovalara inmeye karar verdik. Menton'a döndük. Bugün, zengi... read more
