Today was our last day in Marseille. We have been staying in an apartment opposite a beach so this morning Mum and I went swimming in The Mediterranean Sea for the last time. It is a great beach and there is even a beach volleyball club here. In the afternoon we went to Notre Dame Marseille which is a church on top of a huge hill. In Marseille people can see the church from almost everywhere and the views are amazing. We have been catching the bus everywhere because the bus stop is in front of our apartment. I bought the tickets each time and so I asked the bus driver in French "Tois billet s'il vous plais" which means 3 tickets please. Then I said "merci" which means thank you.... read more

Today I went to the island of If. There's a prison on the island which is very famous. A book called The Count of Monte Cristo was written about a man who was a prisoner on this island. Lots of movies have been made based on the book. I haven't seen the movie but I will watch when I get back to Australia.... read more

The first leg of my journey south to Spain landed me in Marseille. There was something happening at the station when I arrived and riot police had a huge area blocked off making navigating my exit a little difficult. I just took the nearest exit out of the building that I could find, so I wasn't sure which side of the building I was on. I didn't have a map, so the street signs weren't helpful. I had looked at a map on my tablet before I left Rotterdam, but without internet access I couldn't bring it up again. It was memory or street signs. The road signs pointed to the Vieux-Port, which once I got there I could find the hostel easily from my memory of the map. However, following road signs for cars in ... read more

Zumindes... read more

Saturday, September 29, 2012 The port of Marseilles, France is no way near the city. You cannot simply walk off the ship, but must take a 20-30 minute bus ride, which the ship charged $12 per person to take. I chose to stay on the ship while Karen and the kids opted to explore the city by foot. The map they were given had three marked walking tours. Unfortunately, the Arc de Triomphe de la Porte d’Aix, their destination, was not a part of the three. So, with map in hand, off they went, making their own tour, meandering through shop-lined streets, even stopping for lunch at McDonalds, before arriving at the Arc de Triomphe. Over 3 hours later they arrived back at the meeting place. If only the rain had held off for 30 minutes ... read more

Marseilles day. A big city with a population of about a million. Glenn had been many years ago but did not feel it was safe to leave his car at the time. We hoped that things would have improved over the intervening years. Surely things would be different. You always have a certain worry about going into a big city, hanging on to your handbag or purse and hoping you will not get robbed. It is the same if its Paris, Rome , Manchester or London. A lot of people and the worry that something might go wrong. But then you have to grit your teeth and take the opportunity to go and see what comes of the day. If you worried about things like this too much you wouldn’t go anywhere. We walked to the ... read more

Waarom zaten we hier? Allerlei hotels bekeken, daar zaten ... read more

Hello Just a very quick blog around a weekend we had in Marseille. First thing is don't go in February its blooming freezing!! Anyway Marseille is a very mixed city, the old town around the Vieux Port (old port) is very picturesque and lovely to stroll around and watch the fishing boats coming in and sell their catch on the harbour side. The port is dominated by the basilica of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde. A beautiful Neo-Byzantine church is situated at the highest natural point in Marseille that looks down on the city. It reminds me slightly of Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio. Just next to the port is the Quartier Du Panier One of the city's oldest districts (and France’s), the Panier is where the ancient Phoc... read more
