Before arriving in Civitavecchia, we had another special event. This one was the Cruise Specialists world cruiser farewell dinner. Several of our “rounders” were leaving in Rome, so we wanted one last get together for all of us who had journeyed around the globe. We joined Captain Scala at his table for the last supper. About five hundred passengers left the ship and another 550 new cruisers boarded in Civitavecchia. We had a very short turnaround time so we decided not to go into Rome but rather just to spend time in the port city. Civitavecchia was the first beach town in Italy. A rail line was built to take Romans out of the sweltering city to the cooling waters of the Mediterranean. The port and surrounding areas were heavily bombed in WWII prior to the ... read more

Finally. I'm actually blogging about what I did today, instead of what I did a week and a half ago. I wanted to get a feel for the city today, so I decided to walk to the port via the old town and the cathedral and then see the 3 castles that guard the port. Also I wanted to have a look at the jardin du pharo (the Pharoe's Garden). Before heading back to the hostel via the new town. The old town was run down and not very interesting. The port was OK the closer you got to the centre-ville. Away from there it was all under construction, or so it seemed. One of the castles had scaffholding all around it, another was just a squat concrete block on a hill, and I couldn't see ... read more

There is almost nothing to actually blog about today. I got on a train at 9 in Florence. After a couple of changes I got to Nice. In Nice I had an hour and a bit to burn. I witnessed my first bit of crime so far on my trip. A bag snatch at the station. I got into Marseille at 8pm. It took me half an hour to find my hostel even though it is right opposite the station. No matter. I went for a wonder around the shopping arcade of the station (how fun) but didn't go into the town proper. This was mainly because I'd heard that you should be very careful after dark in the city and also because I was very tired. France is country number 10. The principality of Monaco ... read more

Nasılsa merkeze yaklaştık ve aracı park yerine bıraktım... read more

My morning started with a cup of espresso. My room is equipped with a Nespresso machine and it is loveliness in a small cup. I stepped out on the balcony and sipped my coffee while listening and watching Marseille wake up. I do think that many Marseillais had a late night last night. I was thinking about how loud and chaotic the Vieux Port was at night. It took watching the morning news to see that there was a huge soccer win for the Marseille team (against Montpellier) and those were the sounds of some very happy and rowdy soccer fans!! So no gunshots … just fireworks … phew! I do have to say that I am just enjoying being in France and being surrounded by anything and everything that is French. It took me over ... read more

This morning I made my way out of Lyon and arrived in Marseille. I will be spending the next five days here. This is not only to allow me to visit the actual city of Marseille but I do plan on visiting some of the neighbouring towns as well. The weather in leaving Lyon was grey and slightly windy and it was not any better as I arrived in Marseille. It was quite chilly and the rain was coming down. No worries … it was bound to happen at one point in this trip. The saving grace was that my hotel the Newhotel Vieux Port is directly across from the Vieux-Port metro station and just a few steps from the actual Vieux Port. My room looks out on this neighbouring church and if you step out ... read more

Sunday, October 31st Today could be summed up in one word - RAIN! It was drizzling when we woke and only rained harder as the day went on. We arrive in Toulon France at 8:00 AM and Nalynn and I had booked a tour of Marseilles, France. The bus picked us up at the dock about 8:30 for a 45 minute drive through the Provence area of France to the city of Marseilles. The City of Marseilles was beautiful, but it was recovering from a garbage strike from the last three weeks. The French are protesting new legislation that raises the retirement age from 60 to 62. I really feel sorry for them! There we went to the Palace at Marseilles, which was beautiful. We also went to the Notre Dame Cathedral at Gault which was ... read more

Ok, so I know it has been a while since I have blogged (already?!? Not a good start) and so much has happened since the last so I will split it up a bit. This blog, as the title suggests, is about my trip to Marseille… I had a few days off before my classes actually started so decided to run away to the south of France to catch a bit of the Mediterranean summer. And what a good idea it turned out to be!!! I caught the TGV which is the super fast long distance train system in France. Marseille is about 800km from Paris and it only took 3 hours! Plus it was rather cheap, only 80euros return. I just adore travelling by train as well… You know that saying “It’s not the destination, ... read more

Last night after the music got going, I went back to the hostel. I was greeted by Paulin at the bar who wanted me to met the director of the hostel Christope, They explained that they were looking for painters to do murals, and they would give me a free room and three meals a day... for as long as I needed to do the paintings, and maybe give lessons in drawing to make extra money... i said that after my tour of Italy I would come back and do the work... Christophe said that there were lodes of hostels he could talk to in France and Italy, and all over the world... I think this could be an interesting way of traveling in the future. Living life at destiny's whim is funny, as long as ... read more

I haven't had a chance to go on to internet in the last two days so let me fill you in on what's be going on. My first night in the hostal, having a good shower before going to bed and sleeping in a real bed, felt like I was sleeping deeply at the bottom of the sea. I woke at 7.30 and jumped out of my bunk-bed and realised my back was feeling great, I had a long cool shower and went for breakfast which is payed for in the price of the youth hostel. Every one is very nice here and says good morning with a smile, I found my self grinning at everyone they were all so pretty and well dress, Swiss blonds and geeky Americans, cute Koreans, and pompus British, what fun! ... read more
