I believe that going to a French Flea Market on a Sunday morning, is a must try for traveller’s, especially food enthusiasts. This experience is where you can really feel that you are French. You can find so many awesome, cheap and good deals in a Flea Market. The good thing here is that you can bargain the price of your desired item. I really enjoy going to markets/ bazaars in the Philippines. But this experience is a must try since the French Market is really different because they sell different types cheese, cold cuts, fruits, vegetables, truffle and other French Commodities. It’s also a good thing if you get to buy fresh ingredients and cook it at your apartment or hotel so that it will be cheaper for you and you will get to eat ... read more

So it’s out of Spain and back into France, the French Riviera to be exact. So it’s the first day in the French Riviera and the whole Contiki crew are heading into Nice for the day. Unfortunately I had to get a shot for my future travels to South America and I figured if I had to lose a day this would be the best time to do it, so I stayed back and decided to head into the local town of Antibes. Turns out a couple of other lads slept in and they were keen to head in to town for the day as well. Not to mention that Nick had done a little homework on this little town and discovered that there was an absinthe bar here. Awesome! So armed with our map we ... read more

The Cote Azur was really beautiful. As I mentioned in my last entry, I was based in Nice. Nice is one of the larger cities in France, around 300,000 people. From Nice there are many beautiful cities and towns which are easily accessible; it was hard to pick, but in the end I visited Antibes and Monaco. Antibes is west from Nice, not quite as far as Cannes. I took a bus ride there for 1 euro, it was economical, but intensely hot and stuffy. The ride took about two hours and after a late night of partying at Waynes bar, I was not feeling very comfortable. I opted for the train to return - only 20 minutes, air conditioned and 3.50 euros. Nice upgrade. I choose Antibes for several reasons: the Picasso museum, the sandy ... read more

Wednesday 16th – Thursday 17th March 2011 The weather was still bad, so we decided to keep moving and drove to Le Muy. The campsite was only on its second day of opening for the season and we were the only guests. On arrival, the weather precluded much exploring but it brightened slightly on the second day, allowing the boys to do some trampolining and perfect their somersaults (not in mid-air I hasten to add). Meanwhile, Max and I were able to trade in some of our English books in the site’s book exchange – very useful. We ended the day with a family basketball game on the purpose-built pitch – got to get our exercise somehow. Friday 18th March 2011 When paying our bill at the campsite, the very friendly (Dutch) owners recommended a visit ... read more

Farewelled the Cinque Terra today. Location was great, accommodation good, breakfast very basic - we were spoilt in Rome and Siena! Headed up the coast and saw patches of snow. Surprising to see snow so close to the coast. The road along the Cinque Terra was very narrow but very picturesque. Finally joined the autostrade and then off we went. The road was very good but still narrow - so not ready for 130 kph yet. Passed some really interesting places but we decided to reach our destination ASAP - the daylight is short. Using the tom-tom has been great. Long drives for the kids but they coped well, and we have been listening to Roald Dahl stories on a CD set - that has been great. There is only so much Italian/French radio one can ... read more

Bonjour!

Day 18 (Monday, September 14, 2009) After checking out of the hotel in Arles, we left the city and began the long two hour drive towards the Riviera. Along the way, we ended up having to pay three separate tolls, which totaled to a whopping 18 Euro (about $27.50 USD). Luckily, we didn’t have to purchase gas that day, so it didn’t take a huge dent out of our daily budget. We drove directly to our hotel, which was located in the town of Antibes. I had chosen to stay at a place called Hotel de l’Etoile based on the positive recommendations it had received on Tripadvisor.com, plus the fact that it had parking and Wi-Fi. Although we arrived shortly before noon, they had a room available for us, which was great considering that we ... read more

So it's probably about time for my next travelpost. It's been a funny time since I did the Turkey trip. The work situation hasn't been great with only a couple of days of work each two weeks, the money from the Turkey trip is on the verge of running out. After the money came through for the Turkey trip I sat down and did myself a little budget and figured that at 250 euros a week I should have about 8 weekw worth of living expenses, not taking into account any small jobs I get. According to my calculations that money should have lasted me up till the 17th of August... I wonder what happened. Anyway I can't say I haven't made the most of my time over here. At the start of the summer there ... read more
