A cumplir un Sueno

Since the age of 5 years old when I bought the Pirate showbag at the Sydney Easter Show I've always wanted to disappear over the horizon under sail. At the time I wanted to go in search of buried treasure, which I would then sell to buy more red frogs (actually I could never decide between red frogs and racing cars which is probably why I never committed till now).

The plan has changed slightly but the idea's still the same, I'll be first trying to get paid work on a private yacht from the south of France. If I can't get any paid work before the end of the European Summer I will be looking to hitch a ride with a recreational cruiser heading this way or that way looking for an extra crew member. As long as the itinerary doesn't involve a scenic cruise of the Somali Coast of course.

So sit back and stay tuned while I enjoy the ride...

Ciao

Africa » Egypt January 11th 2011

Sometimes things just fall into place... Dogwalking in Dahab The idea to come to Dahab all started, looking at freediving video on Youtube. I had been looking for somewhere to escape after the summer season and expand on the 4 day free diving course I did in Palma. The idea stayed dormant after the end of the season as other holiday plans take shape and the idea of flying all the way to Dahab for a week didn’t seem like it would really do the place justice. After my brief stint as a Swan sailor… very brief! The thought of coming down to Egypt started to regain its previous appeal. The initial idea was to venture across the whole of north Africa from Morroco, through Algeria, Tunisa and then finish off with a good month in ... read more

Europe December 5th 2010

End Sept 2010 So we have come to the end of another season. Not many similarities between this season and last. Last season 5 months in the south of France working for a grand total of about 2 months, meeting a few nice people but generally feeling like the whole yachting community is full of tossers, and then finding a genuinely friendly French person on the Riviera is like trying to find a beer for under 5 euros in Antibes! To this season where I knocked back 3 job offers before starting on Aglaia, spending 5 months working on a great boat with a mix of Yard time Charter Trips and time in Palma to get to know the place, and as the icing on the cake meeting some really great people and having a great ... read more

Oceans and Seas July 17th 2010

After spending another summer chamoiing water marks off I think its time to remind myself of why I started on this little excursion. Although I have to admit this season has been a lot more hands on and educational than last year. The plan in short is to buy a boat in the US (almost half the price of similar boats in Australia) take 9 months to sail it back to Sydney. Maybe sell the boat, maybe keep going The trip The trip is going to look a little bit like this Departing Florida Nov 2011 Arriving in Australian Waters in time for Hamilton Island Race week in the Whitsundays at the end of August 2012! Departure November Florida Florida Anitgua 1320 Miles 11 days Antigua Panama 1162 Miles 10 days Departure Panama Feb Panama Marquesas ... read more

Europe » Spain » Balearic Islands » Majorca May 6th 2010

Well, I’ve been here for a month now and what have I got to show for it? Job - zilch Apartment - check Spanish girl to marry (so they don’t throw me out of the country) - zilch tan - getting there! Like I was saying in my last post sometimes I feel like my life is a series of funny events, meant for the enjoyment of others. Like an American sitcom or teen movie where anything that can go wrong, does. So I’ll start this post from when I arrived in Palma a month ago yesterday. The day after I arrived I had an interview with a captain I had been referred to from one of the crew agents. We had a pretty relaxed chat over a cup of coffee, he was looking for a ... read more

Europe March 25th 2010

Well, here I am again on a train crossing Europe, writing another travelblog. Sorry to all those reading this on your computer screens at work. I hope that person in the cubicle next door isn’t having tuna again for lunch, phew stinks! Maybe you can come visit me in those four weeks holidays you have a year… Sorry I wanted to attach a video of the trip to Istanbul last year which I finally worked out how to get on my pc. I had a minimal attempt at editing the video so its still a bit rough around the edges. I finally got it saved with music and everything and you know how big it was, 5gigs. Not sure the wifi connection here at the hostel could handle that much data. Now in my haste to ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Antibes August 17th 2009

So it's probably about time for my next travelpost. It's been a funny time since I did the Turkey trip. The work situation hasn't been great with only a couple of days of work each two weeks, the money from the Turkey trip is on the verge of running out. After the money came through for the Turkey trip I sat down and did myself a little budget and figured that at 250 euros a week I should have about 8 weekw worth of living expenses, not taking into account any small jobs I get. According to my calculations that money should have lasted me up till the 17th of August... I wonder what happened. Anyway I can't say I haven't made the most of my time over here. At the start of the summer there ... read more

Hello all, Welcome to the first blog post of who knows how many, remember to subscribe at the end so you get sent an email if I update my posts. Well I finally find myself with an untimed internet connection and an English keyboard, so I thought I might as well update you on what's going on. I wanted to add some of the video to this entry but I don't want to chance trying to upload the software for the camera onto my boss's PC. The last time I did that I was sitting in an upstairs office in an Austrlia bar in Lille only to ind out I'd just crashed the PC which runs the bar's cash register down stairs. I had a bit of a shock arricing in Milan from Dubai. In typical ... read more
