Hello my fellow travellers! So, mine and Andreas time in France has come to an end, this morning we said our goodbyes to François and thanked him for his kind hospitality. However, since our flight wasn't until the afternoon, we decided to visit one final city on the French Riviera before moving on to Germany. The choice fell on Antibes which is in close proximity to Nice and it was a good choice. Antibes is a very charming small town and it's slow pace was a nice respite to an otherwise fairly crowded French Riviera. We started our exploration of Antibes with a hike up to the nearby Fort Carré. It's a sweaty but good hike and the fort is well worth the effort, it's very well preserved and interesting to visit. Unfortunately we couldn't go ... read more

Two of Antibes’ best known attractions owe their existence to Marshall Vauban (1633-1707), one of the most important men in military history. A soldier’s soldier, humanitarian, social thinker, and engineer extraordinaire, he joined the army in his mid-twenties, rose swiftly, and became Maréchal de France in 1703. He devised a star-shaped fortress with moats, and without “blind spots” where attackers could hide, a style that was copied by military architects everywhere for two centuries. He built 33 forts and fortified towns in both the North and South, modernized weaponry and tactics, and personally directed 53 sieges during that era of protracted warfare. Of significance to Antibes were the upgrading and extension of its fortifications, construction of the breakwater, improvements which made the existing fort virtually impregnable, and the creation of the military and comme... read more

There is a dearth of open spaces along the French Riviera, but nevertheless there are a few places where the bustle of modern life does not overwhelm the beauty and history of the past. Such a place is Old Antibes, the “heart” of a thoroughly modern city of about 100,000 half-way between ritzy-glitzy Cannes and huge, sprawling Nice. I was fortunate to spend three weeks there one February, with unfailingly sunny days and Celsius temperatures in the teens (the 50s and low 60sF). To a Canadian escaping our seemingly interminable winters in various places ever since 1986 it was paradise. Overall, Antibes provided one of the most relaxed, interesting and enjoyable escapes that I have ever experienced anywhere. It was founded by the Greeks in the fifth century BC, annexed by Rome in 43 BC, and ... read more

Woolly says – I could get used to this jet set lifestyle on the French Rivera, we spent yesterday sunning on the beach, my tan is coming on well and I felt that I fitted in well with the cosmopolitan place we were in. Well if you discount the hundreds of Brit’s around not to mention the Italian’s, French, Austrian and a variety of others it was pretty cosmopolitan. Camping de la Plague was good, old but clean facilities, right on the beach and we would happily stayed another night if the bar had closed at a reasonable time! It was a shame, they had a live group on who were really good, we sat in the tent bopping away with Woolly doing his best Elvis impressions and we were happy campers. By 2am we had ... read more

Our time in France was coming to and end. All that was left to do was scoot along the coast, taking in lofty views of the Mediterranean from the corniches that stretch from Nice along to Eze, Menton and past Monaco. It was interesting to see a little of the culture of the French Riviera; palatial houses, sports cars and a bit too much bling on men and women. We spent our last night in Sospel, a tiny town in the mountains and just near the border of Italy. The drive over the border was stunning - through snow covered mountains, shrouded in mist and past gushing rivers. Our first night in Italy was spent on the border of the Maritime Alps at the farming village of Peveragno. We went for walks in between showers, then ... read more
