It’s 7:30 am and we’re pulling out of the driveway, we each had a coffee and jelly toast. Kirsten is happy we’re on the road again. I think that’s a county song, On the Road Again, just can’t wait to get on the road again...... We drive to Saumur and stop at the you know where... the Office of Tourism. Kirsten and Omi get all kinds of info. Our next stop is Chateau de Villandry. It’s known for its gardens and it should be. It is very well manicured, and the chateau was beautiful. Next, we visited the Chateau de Chinon, this is the place Joan of Arc found the young king in hiding and convinced him to give her an army. I can only imagine the king saying to his court .... give her whatever ... read more

Suzy the motorhome was parked for the night on the Flower Camping Ille de Offard in the middle of La Loire. Why are we on an partial island in the middle of the river? To see Saumur of course. Winding our way home we needed to find somewhere to stop off at. And Saumur hit the mark. My first visit to the Loire was in 2002 when I got my first sight of chateaux along this popular part of France. We got chateauxed out by the time we had visited five on the trot and Saumur was one left for another trip. It has taken the best part of 12 years to get round to seeing it and that of Angers where we plan to stop off tomorrow. Our journey over the last few days has ... read more

Loire Valley, France - Abby Fontevraud, Saumur, Doue-la-Fontaine and Troglodytes, Angers, 17 September 2013 Abby Fontevraud was going to be a walled city, originating from a monastery in 1101. However, it never moved beyond a monastery and its associated buildings due to the challenges of the time. It did become the royal tomb for Henry 11, Richard the Lion Heart among others. But in the late 1700s the monks left and the nuns were expelled. In 1804 the Abbey became a prison through to 1985. Before this, in 1975, it became under the control of the Ministry of Culture of the Loire Region, so times were changing. In 2000 the entire walled town was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List which of course will guarantee its preservation of its role in history. When we arrived, ... read more

We arrived in Saumur, in the Loire Valley, on Saturday 27th April, having booked 6 nights on a campsite situated on the tiny island of Offard, in the middle of the Loire River. From our pitch we had an amazing view of the waterfront opposite, the Saumur chateau (although unfortunately the chateau was obscured by a really large tree… but, still…) and the steady peaceful flow of the river. We explored the town the following day, most of the shops were closed it being a Sunday but there bars, cafes and a patisserie or two open (what more could you need?) and an antiques market being held in the main street. Wandering through the market, we marvelled at the array of items for sale: furniture, ancient record players, swords (?!), clothing, rusting farming paraphernalia… you name ... read more

Since checking into this wonderful little hotel the very attentive hosts had asked us on numerous occasions whether we wanted to take breakfast in the morning (for an extra charge). We kept telling them "no, merci", but they just smiled and said we could change our mind in the morning. We didn't. At this point in our journey I had decided we were getting maybe a little too crazy with our money. Close to $40 for breakfast seemed a little insane at this juncture. Right around the corner was the Carrefours mini-market where we were able to assemble our own moveable feast for less than $20. Loading the car was once again a puzzle worthy of its own TV reality series. No longer was I concerned about damaging items in the suitcases when I slammed the ... read more

Ahhh, where do I even begin? The weekend of June 21st-24th, 2012...or something like that. Leading up to this weekend I had zero clue what the plan of action was. Leaving was France was my first choice, but that didn't happen. Transportation around Europe is very cheap...if you book two months in advance of the departure date. However, if you wait until two DAYS before leaving it is extremely expensive, only royalty can afford these prices. Well, or young college kids who poorly planned a weekend trip and give in to the pocket busting prices. Perhaps Greece should look into similar means of revenue. So with my peasant budget I began scowling over the internet trying to find the perfect place for a weekend visit. For some reason or another, only big cities seemed to stand ... read more

We checked our guidebook and map and decided to visit the Château de Brézé as it is less than 10 miles away and therefore an easy day trip by scooter. Bit of a drag getting through Saumur to the road out as Saumur is very much a one-way system and all attempts to go directly across to the road we wanted were foiled. Eventually found the D93 and got on our way. When we arrived at the chateau we were both agreed that it was a rather boring ride with little of interest along the way, apart from hoping there were no bicycles out today as we rode part of the way, where the road was quite busy, along the cycle track. There was a coach trip just leaving as we arrived so we thought our ... read more

There are caves in both the rock under Château de Brézé and in the rock outer wall of the moat. People used to live in them. Amazing.

Really heavy rain in the night pounding on the roof and everything soaking wet when we got up, wearily, after quite a disturbed sleep. Decided that there was not a lot we could do if we stayed where we were as too wet to enjoy the country park aspect of the campsite so we packed up and left. Sunday is always a good day for driving with the truck free roads so a good decision to move on today. We took a simple route, bypassing motorways but keeping to the main road, straight up country via Poitiers. Past field after field of cows and crops. This is a good time of year to admire this agricultural area of France when half the crops are harvested and the fields are being ploughed ready for more. It all ... read more

so last weekend we were all bored of visiting museums and decided to take a day trip to Saumur its a town 21mins by train outside of Anger's and is also home to a chateau....and dancing horses but most importantly it is home to the troglodytiques, which are just a fancy french way of saying underground villages or mole people haha jk. what is special though, is that in the caves, lives a special form of wine. sparkling wine to be exact, and interested in all things vine related, we girls, thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to expand our knowledge of the wine making process. plus get out of angers for the day so up we went to saumur to a vineyard called Louis de Grenelle, its a cute little establishment off the beaten ... read more

Awoke at 8 am to dim light. The river had spawned a mist that obscured the sun and any view of the river. We had leisurely tea and croissants in the camp cafe, then up a steep climb to the Saumur chateau with amazing views of the river valley. Then onwards towards Champigny and beyond to Abbaye de Fontevraud. We passed through rolling hills of old yellow sunflowers, rows of vineyards, and wooded lanes. Up and down, up and down, but all at a relaxed pace. The Abbaye was beautiful, and you could wander the halls and get lost in them at your own pace. The kitchen was fantastical, but was sadly empty and gave no hint of it's previous life except for long cylindrical chimneys. A surprise in one corner of the estate was an ... read more
