Wir sind am Samstagabend, 28. Juli Richtung Burgund abgefahren.

Carcassone, Bas-Langedoc, 28 & 29 July The locals I met in Marseilles made a lot of fun of Carcassone, saying is was not the real France. The place is so tourist-orientated that this perception is not too surprising. However I did notice locals stocking up at the Saturday morning produce market, proving that people to actually live here. La Cité - is one of Europes largest city fortifications. It looks like something out of Disneyland with turrets, witches-hat roofs and a dry moat. There is also a castle within the walls. The small, winding streets are chock full of restaurants and kitschy souvenir shops selling everything from jewellry to clothes to medieval costumes and armour, in fact anything possible to separate tourists from their money. At night the illuminated La Cité appears quite magical. Ville Basse ... read more

This blog has suddenly become a joint blog with my good old mate Dan. We are friends from way back. We jointly decided that there would be nothing better in the world to do than bike through the Sahara in the northern summer. So here we are getting closer. We´ll have turns about at writing up the blog, and I´m sure that Dan can spell better than me. Five days in Paris soon turned into three days in Lyon, again through couchsurfing. I finally met up with Dan, and we're now travelling together through wild southern France and into boiling hot Spain. We got off to a disastrous start for our combined travel. We were supposed to meet at a certain metro station but Dan's plane, from London, was delayed for over an hour, ... read more

Here's the view from Tim's parents' house in Fuilla, in the very south of France (practically in Spain). We spent a lot of time on this terrace, mainly eating tasty food and drinking Muscat de Rivesaltes. This is an aperitif wine, so obviously it's very uncouth to be drinking it by the bottle, but the beauty of staying in a house in a tiny village is that there were no French people to see and disapprove! It was very sunny and lovely here, in contrast to the floods and gloominess back in Angleterre. ... read more

Hi all, Sorry this is a bit tardy. We had a great time in (or rather all around) Soubes. We took day trips to the beach. We drove up in to the mountains to try our hand at canoeing, see limestone caverns, and visit a Templar walled city. We visited many historic towns and cities - each one different and with its own fascinating story. We drove to the Camargue nature reserve to see the legendary flamingos and white horses. We often had very long days, and there was not much time in the evening to catch up on other chores! We were lucky to be able to rent Sonjia Montgomery's house (www.houserentalfrance.com.au) in the charming village of Soubes. We invited some friends from Melbourne to share it with us. Luckily one of our friends ... read more

Today is the Fourth of July and in France, it means nothing! But, because we are American, Dean Dawson arranged for all of us to go to an olive farm and olive oil processing plant for a little picnic of wine, olives, cheese, bread, and olive spreads. We were taught the process of how to make olives into olive oil and we were able to sample some of their oils and olive speads (like a tapanade). We also had some wine samples, which was not my cup of tea, so to speak, because I am definately not a wine drinker, but I tried some anyways. The view was incredible! There were rows and rows of olive trees and there were pebbles along the path and a beatiful view of a town in the distance. The ... read more

So today was an interesting day in Montpellier for the sole reason that I got lost...twice. Loren and I boarded the wrong tram and ended up going for a little tour of Montpellier. We now know where the end of the line is. We were nearly late for class (we had left at noon for a 1pm class and what should ahve taken 15 minutes took us 55 minutes because we had to haul ass to school to be on time). My calves were burning by the time we made it up the stairs and into our seats. Luckily, Professor Seigal was rnning late by a minute, so we were fine. After class, Katie and I decided to take our books to the Place de Comdie for lunch, studying and people watching. After a lunch ... read more
