Three Days in Sete France We took three days to drive south to see our friends Ross and Maureen. They had rented an apartment in Sete. Sete is a fishing village of about 30,000 people on the Mediterranean. It is the second largest fishing village in France (Marseille is largest). Located in the Languedoc-Roussillon area, it is often referred to as the Venice of France. The area along the port has an old Atlantic City feel with side by side cafes, tourist stores, bars, restaurants, hotels. We were there during the second week of October and many of the seasonal places were closed and little or no evidence of tourists. The city gives off a no nonsense working town impression, almost industrial with few embellishments and frills. What would you do in Sete? A wonderful 11 ... read more

Still More Dordogne Food Reports Le Relais des Cinq Chateaux 24220 Vézac en Périgord Tel : 33-553-303-072 Fax : 33-553-303-008 e-mail : 5chateaux@perigord.com This was another revisit for us from our previous trip. Cinq Chateaux is a favourite of ours but never seems to get a lot of respect. I suspect it is partly because of the location in a modern motel/hotel place although some have reported terrible meals before Eric Vasseur took it over a couple of years ago. We arrived at 1:30 on a weekday and they were already frantic with a large group of French tourists who, we found out later, were from Paris. They were having a fun time and the wine seemed to be flowing. We relaxed and had a Kir Royale while we studied the menu. The menu is a ... read more

Bonjour Mon Ami and how are you all today? At last an addition to the blog! Sorry for delay-impossible finding anywhere! So now where was I? Florence was interesting as we stayed in the youth hostel and visitied the local rugby club to watch the Wales match and got lost on the way home! Met the local Italian IRB referee assessor and had a great afternoon with Kevin the only welsh man watching - and they were all routing for Fiji! anyway then we decided to give Venice a miss-too much travelling or a few hours in the place so we headed for Pisa. found a lovely family hotel near the station - saw the leaning tower but decided not to go up- 15 Euros and very hot there so decided the appeal is in seeing ... read more

Hey All! So it is the end of my third week working as an jeune fille au pair in the south of France. I am living and working in a tiny village called Aniane. Its a beautiful village, with very old brick homes and roads. The 'town center' is really cute, and is actually pretty similar to what I was expecting. The village houses about 2000 people only...so it is really small! Well the trip got off to a rough start. My flight was delayed about 2.5 hours, due to 'right engine trouble'. Now, that's all we were told, but that's enough for me to want to get off the plane. However, we all waited patiently while the mechanics sorted out whatever the problem was. But then we were further delayed as a passenger had to ... read more

Well we have left Vigo for our next planned date- Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. It was sad to leave our good friends in Vigo but we were looking foward to what lied ahead. We travelled throuth Andorra, a small country built up and full of shops in its capital; but with beutiful scenery only 20 mins away from its central district. We indulged ourselves in Europes largest spar complex (30 Euros for 3 hours in a large pool, says Ben) and found a lovely camping spot smack bang in the middle of the Pyenees in a little village called Soldeu. We took a cable care to the top on one of the Mount Gallo which had gorgeous scenery. Sadly bens ankle meant he coudlnt hire a downhill mountain bike, but maybe thats for the best. We ... read more

Montpellier. The Wobblies are based there and so too did we for 2 nights either side of the game against Fiji. The win was solid but exposed a few deficiencies. The highlight was Montpellier itself. A biggish city with real charm and the most psychodellic of trams. We also caught up with our mate Rod who was over with a few of his Londoner comprades. All nine of us had a wonderful night out after the match in a restaurant tucked into the corner of a quaint plaza somewhere in the back streets of Montpellier. The food in the restaurant was another story. In my experience, a menu's BBQ plate would indicate the kransky would at least be waved enticingly close to something hot before being placed on a plate and served to a customer. The ... read more

Bonjour! Whew - well, let me start things by apologizing for not writting sooner. It has been well over a week now and you all deserve an update. what better way to fill you in then by a quick recap of our gallavanting around France (and belguim). After a long day of relatively peaceful traveling (no babies crying, no obnoxious seat mates, no bad turbulance, etc), we spent a few short hours in Dublin and thanked ourselves for deciding to move on. Bypassed Brussels for Bruge, a quaintm but small tourist village that on the surface looks as though it has been perfectly preserved from the 1600's or so, on furhter inspection thanks to Lonely Planet reveals that much of the architechture is from the 19th and 20th century built in the style of the 16th ... read more

Well after a 36 hour trip we finally arrived in Paris two days ago. Stayed in a dodgy hotel and got our rental car. We drove to Troyes on Sunday and took in the amazing sights of the 600+ year old buildings. Did 600km yesterday - which is great fun on the 4-8 lane french highways where even the cops honk at you to get out of the way if you are too slow! Freddy the 1.6 litre Ford Focus has been chewing up highway at breataking speeds (we travel at 100 and the french usually sit just above the limit of 130). We are in Nimes for the next couple of days and will be heading to Marseille after that. Well that's all the time we have on this session in the internet cafe - ... read more

After the Dordogne region we headed towards the French riviera, via Millau. Up until now Europe has been pretty much the same everywhere we have gone, flat or rolling, green and not too different to New Zealand. Once we hit Millau things changed. Finally some hills! We went to Millau for the bridge but found one of the best campsites we have had, complete with squirrel collecting nuts, some amazing limestone cliffs, hundreds of Vultures in the hills. Altogether a pretty nice place. Heading on we went through somepretty windy country roads, on which the locals were more than happy to pass you on blind corners and large trucks were more than happy to take up your lane on tight corners. We got through this, slowly with only one swerve onto the cerb, luckly there was ... read more

The Tandem Rally and into the Netherlands We are doing fine. We finished the tandem rally last week finding some really good weather. We had only one day with rain which we managed to avoid by being in the cafe at the time. We met some lovely people but were amazed at the difference in their contraptions, their ages and the different ways in which they travelled to Osnabruck. We had driven up from Belfort in France where we had stayed at a very out of the way campsite, a club site in a high wood. It was a mean track leading up to the top which was a bit of a struggle on the tandem. But then we drove up through Germany. We had intended to look at some of the towns on route ... read more
