Europe » France » Corsica » Calvi August 15th 2016

It's very hot in the apartment, so I spend most of the night trying to sleep outside on a couch on the terrace. If I did this back home I would have been eaten alive by a swarm of marauding mosquitoes, but apparently not so here. The taxi turns up; we're very relieved. I thought that we'd have the airport to ourselves at 5.30am, but it's crawling with people. Madrid airport must have a lot of runways. If the departure board is to be believed it seems that sixteen different flights will be leaving at exactly 7.05am. Security is intense. I try to walk through a scanner holding my boarding pass but I'm told I need to put it in a plastic tray. It looks very lonely. I worry that the rubber strips at the entrance ... read more

Our GR 20 – Corsica 19 June 2016 – 7 July 2016 We first fell in love with Corsica’s rugged landscape and beautiful coastline in 2011 when we completed a composite of the Mare a Mare Nord and Sud (Coast to Coast North and South) trails. It was then that we first heard about the infamous GR20** (GR short for Grand Randonee) hike that is considered Europe’s most beautiful and toughest long distance trail. So with more technical hiking adventures under our belt in 2013, 2014 and 2015 in France/Switzerland/Italy and New Zealand we felt ready for the GR20 challenge! Dave created our itinerary to have us doing the GR20 hike from South to North, typically many hikers start from the North end but we wanted to not walk into the sun every day and also ... read more

June trip all planned. 1 week to South of France, ferry to Corsica. 2 weeks round the island, ferry back to Toulon then slowly home. Then the French started playing silly wotsits and striking and burning tyres all round France and especially the areas we needed to be to get to Corsica. Plan A Corsica put on hold. Ferry rescheduled for September when hopefully the strikers will have got bored and gone back to work. Plan B. Let's go to Tuscany in Italy via Switzerland which will require only minimal driving through France and therefore no problem with lack of fuel. Packed and ready in good time but found it difficult to motivate myself as had developed a rapidly worsening cough and throat. Got up to leave first thing on the Wednesday, unable to swallow, cold, ... read more

Europe » France » Corsica » Algajola October 5th 2015

Europe » France » Corsica » Porto-Vecchio October 3rd 2015

Europe » France » Corsica » Bastia September 30th 2015

Don't get too excited readers, I'm afraid I've not escaped the world of 9 to 5 again for the luxury of long-term travels. I wouldn't normally blog about a one week holiday, but our recent adventures in Corsica were the closest I've felt to travelling since I returned home more than 3 years ago and have inspired me to get typing! I was also surprised by the lack of up-to-date information I could find about this destination online (at least in English), so thought I would put our experiences out there for anyone else considering visiting this amazing Mediterranean island. Despite all my plans to hit the road again when I returned from my RTW trip in the spring of 2012, I have since found myself rather more settled than I expected, stuck back in 9 ... read more

Europe » France » Corsica » Ajaccio June 8th 2015

Geo: 41.9186, 8.73688Our tour today was described as the Highlights of Ajaccio, which is in Corsica. We were coached out to what I can only describe as a car park with a view of some towers in the distance. Everyone was underwhelmed. Along the way we passed lots of fancy tombs in which all the local families were buried. This would have been an innteresting place to visit. However we drove by these to stop at Napolean's Cave, a rock under which he would sit when he got tired of being with his 11 brothers and sisters and a monument to him by the side of this which commemorated all the battles he fought whether he lost or won same. Finally we got off the coach in the town and passed by the monument to Napolean ... read more

Geo: 42.7021, 9.45075Just when we thought it couldn't get any better we arrived in Corsica!First impressions were not good as the collection of the pre booked rental car definitely didn't go according to plan but it all worked out well in the end and we finally left Bastia airport bound for Algajola about 90 minutes drive away. From the outset the scenery was beautiful and certainly rivalled Mallorca although it was green and thick with vegetation in comparison. Not suprisingly since we are actually quite close to central Italy, the scenery was reminiscent of Tuscany. We enjoyed the drive in the sunshine and as we got closer to the coast and to our destination it just got better and better. Instead of the pretty little bays in Mallorca there were wide sandy beaches and only a ... read more
