Geo: 41.591, 9.27949So. This is It. The day we've been waiting for, the reason we came to Corsica at all. Day 1 of the 100th edition of the Tour de France. We wake up nice & early (well, no earlier than we've been waking up – about 6:30), take a shower in the World's Tiniest Hotel Room Shower, and head downstairs for a lovely breakfast on the terrace. Some of the other guests there are TdF motorcycle photographers, so we figure, if they're still there, we're all good.Pack up, check out, ask the nice lady (with help from an iPhone app, Jibbigo) if we can park there til about 1:00, and off we go. We had a great spot picked out, where we'd see the guys start up a little hill, but then Dejo decided he'd ... read more

Geo: 41.591, 9.27949Wednesday, June 26The flight from Denver to JFK was uneventful, though the small child in front of us did screech for the first hour. It was the kind of screech that you make when you're first discovering your voice and just like the sound of that screech you just made. But for an hour? Oof.We had about 3 hours to kill, by the time we got off the plane and transferred over to Terminal 4, so we opted to purchase entry to the Delta Sky Club. Free drinks, snacks, wi-fi, and a fairly quiet place to kick back. It would be more worth the $25 apiece (which I thought only 1 of us would need to pay, but…) if you were there longer, but even for a few hours, it was nice. There were ... read more

The GR20 is renowned as the toughest long distance trek in Europe, covering the interior of Corsica for 200kms. I did the guided 2-week trek of the Northern and Southern sections with Utracks. The northern section is deemed the more technical and interesting, with the iron ladders and chains at the Circle of Solitude as a major highlight. However the Southern section is not to be underestimated with stunning alpine forest scenery, steeper ascents and descents, and longer days than the Northern section. By the end of the trek, I was physically spent. I am no climber, but I had a hell of a lot of fun with the rock scrambling. You also need to have complete confidence in yourself and your boots, as sometimes you are balancing on 45-50 degree rock ledges or traversing thin ... read more

Europe » France » Corsica » Ajaccio April 23rd 2013

Tuesday 23rd April, 2013, Ajaccio, Corsica, France Ajaccio's biggest claim to fame is not a landmark or a building but a bloke called Napoleon Bonaparte. He was born here and it is impossible to escape his presence. Streets, squares, buildings, restaurants (and more) are named after him all over the city. Ajaccio is located at the end of a headland and used to be protected by a fort and ramparts along the sea and harbour. The walls can't be seen today as they were demolished in the 19th century on Napoleon's orders. The city was founded by the Genoese in 1492. After disembarking the ship we headed straight for the Tourist Information Office. Here we picked up a walking guide to the city and a list of the attractions and their opening hours. Most of the ... read more

Sorry about yesterday. We got caught up chasing the minnows at the beach. They sure do like the water. Needless to say everyone slept really well last night. Today we went in a different direction. We climbed a mountain. Up the road a little bit and very high up is a town called Montemagiorre. It sits on a mountain called Montegrosse. I can't figure out why the town is there but it is a tribute to human ingenuity to say nothing of engineering. Our ears were popping on the way up the road and I now understand about narrow roads. Anyway tomorrow we catch the ferry for Nice and on to Torino or Turin in Italy. Should be fun and maybe the roads won't be as crazy!!!... read more

Europe » France » Corsica » L'Ile-Rousse October 4th 2012

Yesterday we were in L'lle Rousse which is a pretty tourist town on the coast. There is not too much to see there but with 2 babies along it was enough. The beach was not as nice as ours and too cool to swim so we just walked along the boardwalk and ate sandwiches on the beach. It was a beautiful day and we even took in a boccie tournament (more exciting for some than others) Today we hope to spend on our beach (with bathing suits this time) and relax in the sun. We didn't find the pink rocks that seem to be so famous and the wind was incredible. Anyway today we are going to our beach here at Calvi; We'll be thinking of you all and wishing you were here. The paratroopers are ... read more

Yesterday was called because of rain so today was a doubleheader. We started out with a short road trip in our mighty steed up the very steep hill to the Citadel perched high above the harbour at Calvi. Truly stunning view of the entire harbour and a beach that is simply magnificent. I don't know about anyone else but the climb from the parking lot to the top of the citadel nearly killed me!! It is amazing how people actually built it and still live up there. Really healthy!! Anyway after that we went to the beach and introduced the boys to the joys of the ocean. Now this is where the fun really began. First William didn't want to go then he did. And once he went in he didn't want to get out. Etienne ... read more

Hello from Calvi, After an insane trip over where everything that could go wrong does, we have made it to paradise (except it is pouring rain) The house is fantastic and the pool looks great. Hopefully we can try it out later. After circling over Calvi for an hour and a half before we could land we arrived into a very big storm so there are no pictures from the town yet. We are hoping to get out this afternoon for some site seeing if it stops raining... read more

It's dotted with names that are a glimpse of its Genoese history but it's not Italian. The locals speak French, although for many it's a second language, and they are governed by the tricolours, but come Bastille Day you won't see too many hands on hearts when the band strikes up La Marsellaise. Grill a Corsican on his nationality and he'll probably say just that, he's Corsican. Over the centuries, the island has been something of a colonial football between the Italians and the French, not to mention the Greeks, Brits and of course the Moops (for Seinfeld fans only) who have also had their shot at staking a claim, all fighting to corral a little more strategic acreage for the homeland. France may have been the mother country now for a couple of hundred years ... read more

Jonah and the Whale... Well what a change. Cagliari’s back-streets have been explored, bilges played in, 12v circuits examined and re-examined but we can’t get over the fact that something is different! Richard and Sally arrived on 31 Aug and ever since the Mediterranean has been plunged into depths of winter. The mistral blew through for the last 4 days and strong winds continue to sweep round the south-eastern tip of Sardinia. The new crew Richard “The Blocker” Wallace (not because of his defensive play in the NFL but instead for his role in applying human-loctite to the pipes of the forward heads) is able to strip and reassemble the loo like a US Marine Corps Gunny Sergeant stripping down his M-16. Aunt Sally has made the numerous cups of tea that ... read more
