So, I just finished cleaning seagull excrement from my hair. Apparently it’s good luck. Still not convinced about that one, but I’ll get back to that later. Today we decided to leave Estonia on a speedboat for the 90 minute journey to the capital of Finland, Helsinki. I can’t really say I had many expectations prior to going. In fact, it was just kind of one of those side-trips you feel that you should take because of curiosity, because it’s so close, and because you never know if you’ll have the chance again. Suffice to say, I planned for this outing about as poorly as ever. I booked the tickets’ arrival/departure info backwards. I remembered our passports as we were walking out the door, forgetting we were leaving the country (only to be reminded we were ... read more

Three days to go until our plane to takes off. We will be departing at 8.30 in the morning on June 21st and flying to Istanbul via Riga. Preparations are almost finished now: purchased a minilaptop we will use for writing this blog + all other necessary travel gear. Clothes are washed and piled ready to be packed. Today we saw in the newspaper that temperature in coastal Turkey was +40 C, but luckily somewhat cooler in Istanbul. Even though, can't complain about the heath since here is Helsinki we have grey, cold and rainy weather - kind of like autumn storm or so today. Ok, next time writing, we will most likely have left Finland!... read more

Sunday, August 21, 2011-Trip Notes Why don't they they let you get wifi for free like in the states? I've been to very few places who'll allow a fee connection. I guess I'll wIt until I hit the info center. I set my alarm for 5:00 AM, but rolled over and got up at about 5:20 AM. I needed a shower, so I spent a little extra time on that. I packed up, got out, and was off by 6:30 AM. Fumbled around trying to find Route 140, Old Helsinki Road. Found it, stopped for breakfast, and was on my way. Pretty good. I usually get very lost finding my way out of a city. Route 140 was just too easy. All of the traffic was on highway. Add to that the fact that it was ... read more

I’ve traveled the width of Finland from west to east into Russia and now back east to west. One thing I’ve learned is that Finland is a snooze outside of Helsinki. The entire country is forest and farmland. Farmhouses are painted the requisite rust red, a holdover from when that was the only color available. Woods. Lakes. More woods, right up to the Helsinki city limits. Our hotel, the Scandic Continental (not the Inter-Continental) is quite luxurious. I more or less love the heated marble bathroom floor, the elegant hallways, the comfy lobby, the first class restaurant, Olivo, off the main lobby, serving Mediterranean cuisine, unique for Helsinki. Yes, they have a sauna and swimming pool on the top floor. The sauna is free until 2:30pm, after which it is 100FIM. They offer body scrubs and ... read more

- kautta.

This afternoon wasn't the best! It's not that cold here atm, but not so warm either, little bit under the zero. Anyway, I had to go to library to bring back some books which I needed with my final project and some other books. Before I left, I was looking for the car keys, I couldn't find the right keys anywhere. We have two car keys and one of them is broken. (I only found the broken one) I went to car whit these keys, cause I didn't have anything else. At first I tried to open the car, of course it didn't happen, the lock was frozen. I made pretty mad phone call to dad, and asked does he have the keys which are working, yea, he has them! During the phone call I was ... read more

Day 2 having started a little later than expected, as I was awoken by a constant cough from someone near at 3:30am. Jet lag set in, you know the one it’s the middle of the night and your wide-awake!!!! Finely around 5 I got back to sleep then back up to my alarm at 9 which was short lived as the other jet lag set in and I fell back to sleep till 10:30am. A little annoyed I had missed breakfast I got and got out as soon as possible. Last night I had done some research as to where things where around me and I’ve found that almost everything is. The Old market, and the rest of down town is only a mere 5-10 min walk. Having rushed with everything ready to go, when I ... read more

September 25th Woke up late again as I didn’t get to sleep till 4am. I hadn’t yet iced the knee so I was hearting a little but I wanted to go to the design museum so off I went. Passing the market I grabbed a plate of ‘reindeer surprise’ the reindeer was like eating a hockey puck but the sausage and meatball wasn’t too bad, along with the hollandaise like sauce and the potatoes and onions I was happy. I then continued to walk towards the big park (name?) decided to go through a posh residential neighborhood, where a 2000 foot condo can put you back 1.2millon euro. Old fixed up building after another, the area is beautiful and the shops reflect it $$$$$. By the time I had arrived at the park my old swelling ... read more

September 24th Ouch!!!! Last night jet lag hit me like a tone of bricks. Yes that last espresso probably didn’t help but hey it was worth spending time Mina and Eemeli. I ended up actually falling a sleep at 5:30am and woke up at 11:15am. Not too bad, but it did mean that a good part of the day was all ready gone. I quickly got ready and ‘the big walk’ was on first heading north out of the clutches of the downtown core, over the bridge ad towards the market in Hakanieme. Unlike the one in the market square, this one was packed with locals, the prices where Euro or so cheaper, and the stacks of Chanterelle and black trumpet’s where a good two feet higher. Dam if the hostel had a better kitchen I ... read more
