After not going to bed until 3:30am and being woken up at 8 by people leaving I wasn’t happy. I turned over and snoozed until my alarm went at 9:30am ok ok time to get up. After slugging out of bed it was off the market for a fresh fruit breakfast then off to the hop on hop off tour to see a little of what I had missed yesterday when the rain was coming down. I had planned to hop off at the furthest point and take pictures on my way back but I got tired of the traffic and the accent of the women narrating cus, ones is enough. It was also a bright sunny day so what the heck. I got off at the third stop and walked towards Temppeliaukio (the church in ... read more

After a goodbye from Mom and Dad I was off through US customs, but first security!!! I forgot how ruthless they where, with more more people manning the security machines and gadgets than there where people going through I listened to the signs and got caught. Going through the medal detectors they tell you can take your wallet with you, that is unless you have a credit card bottle opener wedged in with all the notes oups!!! I got BEEPED!!! First I took out my wallet just having realized what I had done, I told the security guy where it was so he took it out had a peak put it aside, and continued with a full body scan with the mobile metal detector. After which I was given and ultimatum, step into the machine for ... read more

Today I sat waiting to set up a bank account surrounded by other people. The bank teller came over to say a couple things and I felt like the least intelligent person in the room. I did not understand one word that came out of her mouth. I think I am going to start studying an hour of Finnish every night or I will just continue to look like the confused/lost tourist. The last thing I want to be like are the immigrants in Canada that refuse to adapt to our culture. You know the ones where you dial to order a pizza from, and it goes something like this: "Hi I would like to order a large pizza." "ya ya." "Can I get a pepperoni pizza?" "So you want a hawaiin pizza with pop." "No ... read more

Helsinki is similiar to Canada at first glance. Weather, road size, trees, islands, water; but look closer and what you see are strange signs, a language so opposite where a u is actuallt the sound of double Os and a y is a u and a j is a y. Confusing when you try and learn it. Grocery shopping was an experience. I went to buy salami and I bought deer salami. Everytime I try to buy regular water I end up with carbonated water. Juice is also tricky I've tried to find regular juice and so far I've drank the most odd things. Jolly rancher flavoured juice sounds good right? But honestly it tastes like you are drinking a bottle of jolly ranchers=way too sweet. Sometimes I just want Ice tea. Try finding lemon juice ... read more

Day 17, Sunday Monday and Tuesday, 7th –9th August, 2011 Helsinki Let’s go shopping!!! A girly afternoon of exploring the centre of Helsinki with another cousin Mia. Lots of other tourists were on the same quest, I heard lots of English, and other languages being spoken around me. We walked past the beautiful Art Deco frontage of the railway station, the entrance flanked by two statue figures with chiselled Nordic features. We wondered along the cobble-stoned (Luckily I didn’t wear high heels for walking in town- I would have done myself an injury) footpaths to Mannerheim street and Alexander street to look in at the many boutiques; lots of little shops featuring handcrafts by various Finnish artists and artisans, inventive and beautiful. We stopped in at Globe Hope, a business which creates goods from recycled materials, ... read more

Day 16, Friday, 5th August, 2011 Naantali - Helsinki Yesterday, I woke late. Tiredness must be catching up. The night before we went for a sauna and a swim in the sea, before falling into an exhausted sleep. A quick trip to Heli’s patch of forest nearby before getting on the train back to Helsinki in the early afternoon. The walk in the forest was really lovely, there were still many blueberries left on the bushes, some cranberries beginning to ripen, and chantrelles still emerging, golden parcels of goodness, through the leaflitter on the forest floor. We also found some raspberries, sweet and tasty. No need to go hungry in the summer here. I’m noticing that the seasons move very quickly here, the summer swiftly giving way to the darkening of autumn.. The evening darkens earlier ... read more

Helsinki Trecem vama fara sa ne intrebe nimeni nimic .... Incepem sa cautam cazarea undeva in centru. Ne cazam e ok dar, totusi avem cateva surprize: parcarea e 2 euro/h (dar o rezolvam noi pe gratis in sistem romanesc), plus gazda (care e chiar buna , se zice..) doarme cu noi in apartament in alta camera cu sotul si copilul (surpriza pe care nu o stiam) Lasam bagajele, si o luam spre centru (cum zic unii pe "corzo"), ... read more

Day one Thursday 21st July, 2011-07-22 Helsinki to near Jyvaskyla I arrived ABSOLUTELY exhausted from being in a seat for twelve hours. The plane was about 20 minutes ahead of schedule which the captain was very keen to inform the passengers. The time was 6:10 am Helsinki time and the weather was a warm 20 degrees Celsius. Beautiful except for the fact that my butt was numb, I’d managed about three hours sleep since leaving home at 7:00 the previous morning, and my body clock was screaming it’s two thirty in the afternoon and I want out of here. Apparently there is a limit of how much plane travel I can handle. Disembarking went without a hitch, but who in their right mind thought that a fully loaded handbag, a seven kilo carryon bag and a ... read more

Continuing from last blog: Fri 15 Jul: From Tallinn it was a pleasant 2-hour ferry crossing to Helsinki, on the MS Star, Tallink Line. The time passed quickly for me as I was near the end of an amazing book borrowed from my friend Imelda: Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, almost 1000 pages of fantastic story telling set largely in Bombay. Now Mac is reading it. I'd recommend it. But again I digress!!! We decided to try and find the Radisson Blu Plaza on foot and it took about an hour, which was OK as although it was a little drizzly it gave us a good opportunity to get a first impression of Helsinki. I'd sum it up as big, wide streets with huge, imposing buildings varying in style, many art nouveau. It's very clean and ... read more
