Huh.. No sehän kuulostaa ihan paratiisilta!

Saturday, September 4, 2010 We caught the train the next morning at 7am. It was a Finnish train so all was clean and modern/up-to-date. We quickly left the city and went into forests of birch and pine of some sort and other evergreen trees. We didn't see as much farm land as we expected instead a lot of lumber cutting operations. (This is true of the cruise from St. Pete to Moscow also. The birch were cut into logs that were about 6 feet long and then loaded on trains, trucks and we saw them on barges on the same river system we traveled on the cruise.) The trip by train was about 5 hours long. More time than was necessary was taken by passport control---a stop on the Finnish side and ... read more

Wednesday, September 1, 2010 What a difference a day makes! Went from a capital city (Reykjavik, Iceland) that is smaller in public buildings than most small towns in US that are county seats to a CITY with narrow trams, HUGE railroad station like in Vienna and Frankfurt, buildings more than 5 stories etc., and many people rushing everywhere. Iceland with a total population of 300 thousand for whole country and its mostly pastoral setting was left far behind. (To see the blog for Iceland, the first part of our trip, go to: http://www.travelblog.org/Europe/Iceland/blog-590551.html Walking from the train station to the hotel (Scandic Marski)---local bus from airport dropped us off there---we cam... read more

30th August 2010 Boat arrives in Helsinki, Finland The boat docked at 8.30am but we didn’t have to disembark till 10am, so at 9.30 we jumped on a tram and 5 minutes later we were in the tourist info. centre in the train station. We bought a 72 hour bus / tram / subway ticket for 24 euros each, but Sid was free. All the hostels in Helsinki were booked out for the next few months, so the only place I could get was an old lodge. We got the bus out to ‘the lodge’ which was 30 mins outside the city, but absolutely fabulous with gardens full of giant oak trees and lots of games dotted around like darts, croquet, boules and an indoor swimming pool and sauna. Our room had a balcony onto a ... read more

So finally the big day arrived and yesterday we were able to finally achieve one of our main objectives of our trip, attending Phil's and Sarita's wedding in Espoo, Finland. After 5 weeks of travel through Bali, Thailand, India and Finland we made it and were very excited about it all. All the trip planning, travel, sharing of rooms and beds, tailoring of clothes and stresses were put behinds. Hopefully it would all pay off. So how did it go you ask? Brilliant, on every level. We left Helsinki at 3.30pm for the 30 minute drive up to Espoo. We had a large (and very flash mini-bus thanks to Kirsty) for a large portion of the family from Australia. We were all in our glad rags for the big day. This was actually part 2 of ... read more

Today we travelled to the Island Fortress of Suomenlinna, which is in the mouth of the main port of Helsinki. It only takes about 15 minutes by ferry to reach the main jetty. It is not only a very popular day destination for tourists, but also for Finns who love to go there for picnics and swimming. Suomenlinna is actually 4 very small rock islands interconnected by small bridges. It is a combination of historical buildings, cafes and resturants, private homes, buildings available for hire for conferences and weddings and a naval acadeny. All of these activities in such a confined area lends the island to a very unique atmosphere. As you travel around the island you can tourists snapping away with their cameras, local inhabitants going about their daily business, school groups on excursions and ... read more

Seeing as I've massively over-compensated for my late ferry check-in by turning up 2 hours to early for my Stockholm ferry, named the Silja Serenade, I shall take the opportunity to catch up here. Yesterday I set out on a northbound excursion through some quiet parkland. I just kept walking along the coast and stumbled upon the Sibelius Memorial, a big bundle of floating organ pipes on a rock next to a melting head. It reminded me of my Harmonium and it's lovely decorative pipes. I hope Reg is in good health and making rapid progress with his pianolas... Anyway, I continued on my way stopping briefly on a splendid rocky outcrop to be buffeted by the Finnish winds (perhaps bellowing from the great harmonium in the sky). What a pleasant walk, I thought to myself ... read more

It´s a bit changeable outside today, occasional downpours and the odd spot of sun so I thought I´d write something before I head out. Yesterday I had a lovely stroll down to the marina and along the sea until I found a rocky outcrop (you might remember these featuring in my blog from last summer). For once I didn´t have my ukulele and just stared out to sea in a contemplative manner. Every so often my nerves were jangled by a ripping noise and shrieks of fear as just along from me people were jumping off a crane attached to elastic to get their thrills. Each to their own but it did disturb what would have been a nice peaceful moment. I walked up to Observatory Hill which affords a great panoramic vista ideal for me ... read more

After nearly 5 weeks in Asia we have arrived in Scandinavia ready for the wedding. Alex is absolutely rapt that people have stopped following him around and pinching his cheeks (the Fins are pretty tall so probably don't see him). Our flight from Dehli to Helsinki was excellent. Because the average male here is 185cm and the average female is 170cm (yes I am the avearge height of a Finnish women) so we had plenty of leg room on the plane. It was a very comfortable flight. A CF of 8 to Finnair and those tall Finnish people. It was about Sunday lunchtime when we landed and most of the people were catching connecting flights to other destinations. As a result there were not many of us who went through immigration and out of the airport. ... read more
