We changed direction and moved from the southern part of the Baltic and headed to Finland, one of the countries bordering the Baltic on the North. The actual sail from Tallinn, Estonia was not the most pleasant with the wind speed and direction not matching up with the forecast – the “fun” parts of the sailing life. It was not unsafe, Tsamaya can handle the wind and waves, but it was NOT a comfortable ride with the wind hitting us about 40°off the bow and high waves that had a very short period. We left Tallinn at 7:20AM on June 29thwith only 7-10 knots of wind but by 10:30 they were up to 25 knots and made it up to 34-35 knots by 1PM. We made it to the marina which was nicely situated on an ... read more

Well, school is out for summer! I am glad to have a few weeks to relish the beauty of summer in Scandinavia before a grand tour of the US that starts on Sunday. A former co-teacher from Denver arrived the weekend before my school ended. As it was her first visit to Scandinavia, we decided to maximize her two weeks and check out a few destinations to give her a taste of the region. We took advantage of the timing of this event called Distortion. Not sure really if it falls under the category of a festival or what, but during the week, the party takes over certain streets in Copenhagen for an evening. Jenny and I stopped in on, well really danced the night away at, the final night of the event. It was great ... read more

So we arrived in the capital city of Finland; Helsinki! This was the first day of tour where the weather wasn't on our side... we walked through in the pouring rain, but we weren't as devastated as some of our European friends who were less used to rain that ourselves. Mixed feelings in the morning, not everyday you can say you're hungover in Finland, but it's not every day you're able to say you watched the opening game of the World Cup (until 1 in the morning due to time difference) on a ferry from Saint Petersburg to Helsinki! The worst part of the morning for myself was firstly trying to stay awake, but secondly mis-hearing that the taster I was about to eat was a sardine... and a sardine + a hangover = disgusting. Our ... read more

Helsinki, Finland--Thursday, May 29, 2014 This morning we watched out our window as the ship made its way past forests, towns, seaside resorts and into the port of Helsinki and docked at a pier. We had expected it to dock where we had previously seen cruise ships berthed, that was way closer to downtown. Unfortunately, where we now were, was quite a ways from the center of town, and we hadn’t booked a tour since we counted on just walking off the ship and browsing along the wharf as we had done before or possibly catching public transportation and taking in the large Suomenlinna Maritime Fortress. Sigh! However, after the cold, wet and long day we had the day before, and the fact that it is raining hard again today, we welcomed a downish day and ... read more

Hello everybody! I know it has been a while, but i will write up a large entry today. I have been doing quite a lot lately. I mostly have been spending time with friends and family, but then there are a few special occasions that have occurred. Like the Finnish prom or Wanhojen Tanssit. It is a long time Finnish tradition where all of the 2nd grade high schoolers move up into the graduating class. Then after the dance we went to a very famous Finnish restaurant and ate some good food. My finnish is getting very good. I can pretty much speak it fluently with anybody I see. I switched families the other day and I have to say that this house is very nice! I really have enjoyed my stay there already. What was ... read more

This morning we started at the Uspenski Eastern Orthodox Cathedral that we walked around below yesterday morning on our way to the harbour. From up on the rocky outcrop that the cathedral sits on we could see across to the other big, white cathedral. From not knowing where it was now we can see it from everywhere! After photographing the cathedral in disappointingly dull conditions we wandered down to the Market Square where we purchased some reindeer antler souvenirs and a birch wood 'puzzle' trivet that has been jigsawed into four pieces so that it can be used as one trivet or four coasters. Very nifty indeed. From down near the harbour we walked back to Mannerheimintie to catch the tram to Kansallimuseo, the Finnish National Museum. Before gaining its independence in 1918 Finland had a ... read more

This morning we wanted to make the 10.20am ferry to Suomenlinna the sea fortress museum that can only be reached by water. After breakfast we walked down to the ferry terminal at Market Square where we purchased a two day public transport ticket each. After our experience in Stockholm we're a bit over city passes so we decided to just wing it with a two day public transport ticket and pay the entry fee for any museums that we visit. Unlike in Stockholm we had no trouble at all taking the ferry to where we wanted to go. The sea fortress was established on islands off the coast of Helsinki in 1748 when Finland was part of the Kingdom of Sweden. Ramparts on the western side of Kusstaankiekka date from the period of Russian rule in ... read more

With our Lapland adventure drawing to a close we re-packed our bags after breakfast before putting all of our gear on for one last foray out onto the lake on the cross-country skis. We headed downstairs to put on some ski boots and then off outside to collect the skis and poles. Once we had clicked our boots into the bindings we shooshed off to see how Sophia's igloo was standing up to the weather. It was still there ... I wonder how much longer it will last? There were only patches of cloud today which meant that the sunlight from below the horizon was reflecting off the patchy clouds resulting in spectacular pink cloud formations. We took heaps of photos without really knowing whether or not the compact cameras could do justice to the show ... read more

Well everyone i did it. I ice skated. It was so very fun. I really like it actually, every time i went around the rink i got faster and faster, but then i would fall on my butt. I also yesterday in helsinki went to a lucia party which is a swedish-finn tradition. It was pretty cool actually. The church looked really nice and there were a ton of people. I switched host families also. It was actually quite nice to switch. The family has a three story house and i get one floor to my self basically. They are all very nice. I am speaking only finnish in the house and I finally have internet access. Everything is wonderful. Bye... read more

Breakfast with a view again this morning - it really is beautiful looking out through Elizabeth's Christmas angels over the snow-covered rooftops and the quaint little church on the hill nearby. It's just a shame that it has to be below zero to have snow!! At least it is not quiet as cold this morning - only minus two. We chatted with our lovely hostess Elizabeth for a while and then returned to our apartment to finish packing and head off. Yay, our last time down the four flights of stairs. The stairs haven't been a problem although a bit more challenging this morning with our bags but, easier taking them back down than hauling them up the stairs two days ago! We caught the bus to Kunsträdgården and then the train to T-Centralen thinking that ... read more
