Spring is springing in the Sarka Valley. After supper we took a walk up the valley. Plants and leaves are exploding everywhere. I really like the delicate greens of spring. They are here for such a short time. I was somewhat surprised to see the marsh grass does not know it is spring yet. There is no green showing in the marsh grass that covers the wet land at our end of the valley. Now if the mosquitoes and ticks do not discover it is spring I would be happy. There are deer in the valley. In fact there are deer all over the Czech Republic. On the way home from Cesky Krumlov we saw numerous deer in the fields and we all know about the deer-tick relationship to Lyme Disease. Now that spring is here ... read more

So this entry is sort of a grab-bag of stories from the last two weeks. It turns out that internet access in Europe isn't quite as cheap as in other places of the world. I am currently sitting in a cafe, using Pugner's laptop with a wireless connection. Technology is nice sometimes. Doctor Dinner in Istanbul So how do you freel about the whole pharamacutical industry bribing doctors with gifts and expensive dinners and what not, in hopes of the doctors perscribing more of their drugs? Pretty sleezy, eh? Totally opposed? Me too. Until. Always an until. The world is never as black and white as we would like. I was offered a chance to go to one of these dinners by a Turkish doctor that befriended me in Istanbul. The food was delish. And the ... read more

Today was an absolutely beautiful Prague spring day. We washed some clothes and then headed down town with no set plans. I wanted to take a picture of the statue that is called “The Disappearing Man”. It is a memorial to all those who were imprisoned, persecuted or killed by the Communists during the era of their ruling Czechoslovakia. A few years after the Velvet Revolution, when the Communists were throw out of power the Czechs and Slovaks agreed to separate the two countries. The Czechs call this the Velvet Divorce. On the tram going down town I realized that the sun was becoming quite strong just as I had thought in the room when we had had the following conversation. “I need my hat if we are going downtown on such a sunny day. Where ... read more

Entries on our Krakow trip are being entered after March 30th. Click on previous entry to read about the event filled trip from Prague to Krakow and back. We made it back safely, but it was a wild adventure, especially getting to Krakow. We will tell you all about it in future as we have time to write. We arrived by train, that's right by train, not by car, this morning at 7:30. The car is still in Krakow, but it needed lots of help in getting there. ... read more

There was an expression where we grew up that “God looks after fools, drunks, and little children.” After today I believe we should add “and travelers.” We got up at our normal time and ate breakfast at seven. Kasha ate with us and we agreed that we would meet her outside our building at eight, load our luggage, which consisted of one backpack, and off we would drive to Krakow. Leaving at eight meant we should arrive in Krakow not later than four in the afternoon. Traffic in the Prague area was terrible. We crept along at about ten kilometers an hour until we moved out into the countryside. Nancy- I know in the USA that traffic in LA is the worst in the nation and in our DC area is the 3rd. If Prague were ... read more

This will be our last post for a week or so. Tomorrow we ride with Kasha to Krakow. We doubt that we will be able or have time to add to this travelblog until we return. We will arrive here in Prague in the wee hours of the morning on Wednesday, May 30th. Ruggiero is a very quiet, very intelligent young man from Southern Italy and holds a degree in philosophy and a masters degree. He came here for further study and will leave in just a few days. Once back home he will start a new job as the pastor of a Baptist church in the southern part of Italy. His English skills have improved tremendously since he arrived. I figure that show that how much more intelligent he is than I. I have been ... read more

This evening when I left the library I saw a beautiful sight, the moon was rising over Building A, The Castle, in a cloudless, unbelievably blue sky. The snow is gone in our area and melting all over the Czech Republic. Unfortunately there is flooding in a number of areas as rivers are rising to flood stage. I hope there is not a repeat of three years ago when Prague was flooded, the subway closed and the city separated by the river. I wonder how many gallons of water were pumped out of the subway system. It must have been millions upon millions of gallons. The German movie, produced last year, on Martin Luther was shown to the CAT students this evening. Everyone was invited. The film was shot entirely in Europe and I must say ... read more

We talked with a very interesting pastor from Maldova at breakfast this morning. He attended the conference of the European Baptist Union and also the EBU dedication service last night. Maldova is an agricultural country of rolling hills and valleys about the size of Maryland. He said there are no mountains in his home country. The Baptists in Maldova have a sister relationship with one of the states in the deep south in the U.S. but formerly they were partnered with our home state of Maryland. He had visited Maryland in the past and had fond memories of the cooperation with churches there. We were joined by two other men, both from Russia. They said that under Communism Baptists were always suspected of being American spies. He did not say so, but I expect man yAmericans ... read more

The weather didn’t cooperate with my plans today. Yesterday was a beautiful, warm day and I was looking forward to a similar day today. However, when I got up it was very gray, chilly and raining. My good plan of going downtown didn’t seem so good now. Dejan has been hoping for rain to wash away the sand that was used on the snowy sidewalks. If the sand is not washed away by rain, it will be his job, as part of his work scholarship, to sweep up the sand. It is a very gentle rain this morning and I am not sure much of the sand is going to be washed off the sidewalks today. After breakfast we cleaned up the room. As we were cleaning the room we also had three loads of clothes ... read more

If you haven’t noticed, Nancy is clever. We both were approaching the shaggy dog stage again. Nancy had noticed that Cheryl’s hair is very nicely cut. So she asked her, “Where do you get your haircut?” Cheryl told her and gave her the business card for Hair Studio Divine. “Ask for Gabriela, she speaks English and I like her.” Yesterday Mirka called Gabriela from the library and made an appointment for both of us to get our haircut today. We caught the 7:58 bus from Jeneralka to Dejvicka. Cheryl’s directions were, “Walk to the KFC and take a right up the hill. The salon is a short walk from there.” KFC is a great landmark, after all we recognize Colonel Sanders and the letters KFC. I can’t see us ever eating there, but it is great ... read more
