(Friday a.m. note) Can you believe that Olivia left home a little after 8 and her son was born by 11? Now that is a very fast delivery! At breakfast this morning she and the baby were the topic of much happy discussion. It seems everyone was praying for a fast and safe delivery. Good news like this makes everyone so happy. This afternoon Johanna came into the library. “I have two tickets to for the premier of a new ballet tonight that I can’t use. Can you use them, or do you have to work until eight tonight?” We decided we could use them. Johanna is from Hungary and a student here. She said she often buys standing tickets for the opera and ballet. A standing ticket means you do not have a seat. ... read more

One of the men on the work team from Wheaton, Illinois asked Nancy and me if the library has any materials on Baptist work in Denmark. One of his great uncles was part of the original group of people responsible for the founding of the Danish Baptist Association. His grandfather was a missionary/pastor to Danish immigrants to the midwestern part of the United States. He wanted to see if there is any information concerning the world of his great uncle. Both of us told him we didn’t know, but would find out for him. Nancy and I did check and found a few items. Nancy made a list of books and when we saw him at lunch I gave him the list of books. This afternoon he came to the library. Together we began checking. Some ... read more

I have learned that we can blame the Russians for the cold air we are having and the Italians for the moisture that is falling as snow. Cold air has streamed into Central Europe the last few days from Russia and a low pressure system is pumping moist air up from the south. The result, the two air masses are colliding over Central Europe and the moisture is falling as snow. And today, indeed, it did snow and snow and snow. The weatherman says colder air is headed this way and the lows for the rest of the week will be in the teens. There are wild pigs in the Sarka Valley. By wild pigs I do not mean domestic pigs that are free and wild in the woods, I mean the wild boar that have ... read more

We ate breakfast with the men who arrived Friday evening. There actually turn out to be 7 of them. Two must have slept later than we did yesterday. One is from California. Today they will start the project of raising the floor in the registration/security building eight inches. The primary reason for raising the floor is so the workers in registration will be able to see people approach the building. As it is now, when they are seated working on the computer they cannot see the area near the building. The road leading to the seminary drops away quickly from the registration building. This makes it lots of fun when it is icy and we have to walk to the bus stop. Today we worked in the library all day, processing books. We will do the ... read more

At breakfast this morning there were 5 young men obviously good friends eating together. They flew in last evening from Chicago and will stay all week to build a new floor in the reception area. Neither of us can imagine what that means. The reception area looks very complete to us now. So it will be interesting to see the change and what it accomplishes and how it adds to the area. They said it was partly for security purposes. So, we will watch with interest. They were all quite awake but their bodies were still on Chicago time. I heard one man say he awoke at 12 last night and couldn’t get back to sleep. Probably his stomach thought it was supper time. We know how that feels. They will come to church in a ... read more

We have been here for a month. So, one month of the 5 and 3/4’s that we are staying has already passed. We have certainly experienced a lot. We have done a lot of work. We have made some good new friends and we hope to make a lot more. It has been fun. The day is dawning without any snow falling. Odd... The sun was shining into the cafeteria. We get to eat undisturbed very often in the morning. Not that others disturb us, we enjoy eating and talking, but there is NO one in the cafeteria when we get there most days. That is doubly true on Saturday and Sunday when the students are still fast asleep while we are eating. The cafeteria opens at 7:30 and we have been awake since 6:20 or ... read more

Every Wednesday evening at six a seminary van makes a grocery store run. Anyone at the seminary can hitch a ride. I and 7 others went to the grocery store this evening. It is the same store I talked about in earlier posts. I had a fairly long list and found everything except peanut butter and brown rice. I was a bit surprised at how many shoppers were in the store on a Wednesday evening. The place was quite crowded. “You didn’t look low enough,” Cheryl said, “the peanut butter is stuck on the very bottom shelf, below the jelly.” “Well,” I replied, “I found the jelly and saw that chocolate paste they sell here and in China to put on your bread. I’ll look lower next time. I guess it was at Tesco that ... read more

This evening there was a Valentine party for everyone here at the seminary. For the last weeks people have opened their door to find a small package lying on the floor, or a note, a postcard, or a short letter taped to their door ... or ... someone has knocked on the door and when it is opened have handed a present or card saying, “This is from your secret neighbor.” Everyone was given a secret neighbor to whom to give small presents and/or encouraging messages. It was lots of fun. At the Valentine party each person was introduced to their secret neighbor. Before the secret neighbor was revealed each person was asked, “Who do you think your secret neighbor is?” Surprisingly several people guessed correctly and several people knew. I found it interesting how many ... read more

Sunday February 14th, 2005 In a small community, such as we are living in, you get to know and like people quickly. Here are people from widely scattered countries and diverse cultures and yet the community is quite close knit and caring. Just down the hall from us a young family from Armenia have their apartment. They have been here about a month, he studying and she caring for their two children. Their daughter is about six and has been learning English, French and Russian at the school she attends in Armenia. Their son is about three and as he has not attended school yet has no idea what we strange looking people are saying. Today is their last day here. This evening they will go to the Prague airport to return to their home in ... read more

We kept the library open again this Saturday. It was the last day of the Intensive schedule and many of the students who are part time students will return home with tons of homework and a lot of reading to do. They were busy today returning library materials, making copies of things they will need for home study and getting in the last few moments of precious library study time. We are very delighted with the caliber of student who is attracted to this seminary. They are certainly the ‘cream of the crop’ of students from Eastern Europe and a few other countries. Most of them are not merely bi-lingual but multi-lingual. It is hard for an American living in such a mono-lingual country to imagine folks who speak 3, 4, 5 different languages and speak ... read more
