I suppose most of the capitals of Europe are like Prague, history meets you at ever turn. Most, however, do not contain so much history within a comfortable walking distance. Several weeks ago we were walking through a part of the Little Quarter and saw several buildings. On one was a brass plate. The only word we could make out was Malta. A flag hung over the doorway giving it the appearance of an embassy. Later, while reading a guidebook, I discovered that several centuries ago this section of Prague was owned by the Knights of Malta. They were a powerful force. This area is now called the Maltese Square. The Japanese embassy is now housed in one of the palaces in this area. I especially like the iron work in the main gate to one ... read more

Bach’s Requiem The Church of St. Nicholas sits in the middle of the Little Quarter. With its large dome it is quite a landmark. Construction on St. Nicholas began in 1703 and the finishing touches were made in 1769. As we walked past we saw that Bach’s Requiem was scheduled to be performed at 7:00 this evening. “Do you want to go?” Nancy asked. “Why not?” I replied. We walked up the steps and bought two tickets. It was 6:00 at that time and we had not eaten our evening meal yet. Nancy-Bill had given me the money and I bought the tickets. Just as I finished handing over the money and got the tickets in my hand, someone opened the church door. I belatedly realized we were going to be sitting for an hour in ... read more

One of our goals today was to see the Church of St. Michael. We have seen pictures of the church, but had not actually seen the church. This small 18th century wooden church was moved to Prague from a village in the Ukraine. I was fascinated with the roofing shingles. They are small wooden shingles that are about two inches across, about five inches long and perhaps half an inch thick. To me they make a beautiful pattern on the church. The church is in Kinsky Garden which is right beside Petrin Park. In fact it is hard to know when you leave one and enter the other. Both are on the big hill, or should I call it a small mountain that rises on the west side of the Vltava river above the Little Quarter of ... read more

The walk up the east side of the hill in Pekrin Park is a long walk. There are places where the path is very steep, but there are interesting places along the way. On top of the hill are an observatory, a mirror maze, concessions shops, food shops, gardens, part of the old wall and other interesting places.... read more

We left Vojan Park and walked past the western end of the Charles Bridge and then through the neighborhood beside Certovka, the Devil’s Canal. Legend has it that the name dates back to Medieval days when a very ill tempered woman lived by this small off-shoot of the Vltava river. The Devil’s Canal is the western boundary of Kampa Island. In times past it was used as a mill race and at least one old water wheel is still there. We crossed one of the walkers bridges onto Kampa Island. This is where the Prague marathon ended two weeks ago. Walking for several hours brings on hunger and by this time we were looking for a restaurant. There is no shortage of restaurants. Rather it was simply a matter of deciding at which one to stop ... read more

We got off the subway at the Malastranka station. Coming out of the station we decided to walk through an area we had not visited before. The street was lined with businesses and restaurants, but not many people many people were walking there. We came to a wall and walked along it. Nancy-I saw a large sign saying WC and indicating that the door into the wall was a path to a 'comfort station'. Since I like to know the location of each of these in any city where I am apt to be wandering the streets, I decided to go in and find it for future reference. As we passed this open entrance in the wall much to our surprise we saw a beautiful park. The park dates back to the 17th century. At that ... read more

Jason is two today. He is the much beloved son of two of the people we live with in the dorm here. His dad is studying here and his mom is doing the 1,000 things any mom does plus helping ever so much to make the music in our worship and chapel services marvelous. This family shares their two boys with all of us which is wonderful since most of us are far away from children, grandchildren, younger brothers and sisters, etc. The whole community smiles when they see Jason. He is learning to talk but he has no trouble communicating even when he has no words. He smiles and laughs and wins all hearts. It is amazing to watch him in chapel or church. He sits quietly and sings from the hymnal or printed page ... read more

Brandon, one of the really neat kids here. He has a little brother named Jason. He came running up to me the other day, pulled down his lower lip and said, "I have a loose tooth." Then off he ran to show others. Yesterday as Nancy and I were walking up the 48 infamous steps to our building he came running down the steps. As he approached us he yelled, "Watch out! BEEP! BEEP! Brandon is a friendly, extroverted child who loves to talk to everyone ... even we adults. ... read more

Prague had the most beautiful architecture we've seen. The whole city was gothic and mysterious looking. We spent hours in the old section of the town and the Jewish quarter just looking at random buildings. We can't figure out the name of our favorite building but check out the picture and anyone who has been to Prague feel free to tell us! We also visited the Prague Castle and took a walking tour which was supposed to last for one hour but we had a very enthusiastic new guide so it ended up being closer to two hours! Our favorite part of it was St. Vitus' Cathedral which was built over three centuries and had beautiful stained glass. From the castle we walked across St. Charles bridge, a 600 year old bridge that has 32 statues ... read more
