Hvar comma Hvar comma Croatia fullstop We were sad that we had to finally leave Dubrovnik this morning. We travelled up the coast which was strangely not anywhere near as impressive as we had thought. One of the highlights was stopping at the bus station in Polce because we felt toilet. We were greeted by a large lesbian woman in overalls who seemed to have taken on the role of toilet policeman and charged us 2.50 kuna (67c) each for using the toilet. We did however get a souvenir toilet admission pass, perhaps we can use it again and again? We tried our luck catching the car ferry from Drvenik and as luck would have it, managed to get straight on and got to the tail tip of Hvar island in only about 30 minutes. The ... read more

We got up early and booked a Walls & Wars tour of the city which involved a 2km walk around the top of the Dubrovnik Walls. Great views, really super stuff. Our guide Michael was a young Croatian Goth type dude who kept saying 'Is it OK?' at the end of every explanation. Oh, our apartment has great views here too, everything does, you really cant go wrong.. except for the 200 steps to our apartment from the street. Legs of pure rubber!!! ... read more

Up with the squirrels and off to Gatwick! A maze of tubes and trains masterfully conquered by our intrepid travellers and then off over France and Austria, down the Adriatic coast for a touchdown at Dubrovnik. Initial concerns at the lack of a map, and the total lack of assistance by the Sixt rental outlet to even show us where our car was hiding (eventually we caught it after taking our trundell bags down the main highway) led to total disaster, mayhem and trauma, (on my part) trying to come to grips with a manual transmission in a right-hand drive Skoda in Dubrovnik rush hour. Needless to say, we got hopelessly lost, and I got hopelessly hopeless. After 3 hours, we managed to travel the required 44 kms to our new home, Apartments Stankovich. Fortunately our ... read more

On Saturday 18th August we caught the ferry across from Split to the Island of Brac, the closest island to Split and a journey of one hour. We arrived in the main island town of Supetar and then caught a bus around to the village of Sutivan, where we had booked an apartment for two weeks. It was unbelievably hot when we finally got to Sutivan with limited directions on how to find our apartment, however we managed to find it even if we walked twice as far as was necessary. The village of Sutivan was small with only a couple of restaurants, two small supermarkets and a bakery and whilst there were some tourists staying there it also had a local feel which is what we were after. The beach, like most Croatian beaches was ... read more

The tiny flame flickered furiously as it bent to resist external control. Its un-rhythmic dance served to tease its master as the glow swooped and swayed, paying homage to the wind. Rising swiftly upward then all but ceasing to exist, the fire defiantly demanded its audience take heed. In response, two burly hands encircled the performer to which it slowed in tentative obedience. The master was in control now. His breath drew the flame into complete submission, enticed into a thin strand of light, which crackled at its success. And then, without warning, the fire was extinguished and the master exhaled in a billow of smoke. I woke the next morning covered in ash. Peering out the tiny window I could see the silent flakes fall, like black snow onto a world which feared their origin. ... read more

Our full day in Split started by paying a visit to some Roman ruins nearby at the former settlement of Salona. It was very hot out there with little shade, but it was quite interesting seeing the remains of the amphitheatre and some other buildings. After catching the bus back to Split we explore the basement level of the former Diocletian palace. Whilst the above ground levels have long since been demolished and replaced with more recent buildings, the basement level still exists beneath the old town. It was fun walking around all the underground rooms. The above ground area of the Split old town is also quite charming, with plenty of marble floored pedestrian walkways and squares. We even found some people masquarading as Roman soldiers guarding one of the entrances. After our walk around ... read more

Awesome Croatia Next day it is absolutely scorching and we head to Dubrovnik, Croatia, for the day. After waiting at the border for over an hour, we finally arrive! This place is absolutely amazing, the coast is absolutely beautiful and the town of Dubrovnik ‘the jewel of the Adriatic’ itself is all within Ancient City Walls. I definetley would like to head back to this town for some summer relaxation. The town itself is really cool, we wonder around and walk up on the city walls for a fantastic view, and have the yummiest lunch ever! I had oven-baked squid with roasted potatoes and it was divine! They have their very own Haviana shop, and I did happen to purchase my very own pair of Croatian Haviana’s, there cool! We also manage to fit in awesome ... read more

We had been planning to travel to the island of Hvar by ferry from Dubrovnik, however when we asked about the ferry we found out it only went two days a week and the day we wished to travel was not one of them. This meant another long bus trip instead, direct to Split! This bus trip took about 4.5 hours and involved travelling up some long, winding and narrow sections of road. At one stage we had to stop whilst another vehicle coming the other way down the hill had to reverse so we could get past. Coming off the bus at Split we were greeted once again with hoards of people trying to sell us accommodation. This time, without it being so hot, we first checked the ferry timetable to see what we would ... read more

We left Mostar with no place booked ahead as we boarded the bus to Dubronik. This was due to a combination of our general condition and also the lack of internet places we could find in Mostar. We did however find a pharmacy (or Apoteka) in Mostar so we were starting to feel a bit better. Despite this bus trip being longer, it was not so bad as the last one. We met a couple of Australians on this bus who had relatives both in Bosnia and Croatia and they told us about some of the things we could look forward to in Croatia. When we got off the bus we finally gave in and accepted an apartment from one of the many accommodation spruikers who bombard you when you get off the bus with signs ... read more
