Croatia Once again we had the fantastic opportunity of going to Croatia on our summer holidays, this time with Emma and Stephen. Differently from last year the weather was really nice throughout our stay and we have enjoyed every minute of it. Feel free to check out our photos. ... read more

It seems like the last week was destined to be one of unusual occurances.......mostly due to our being a bit over-relaxed in holiday mode I guess. These events started last Saturday when Luke went off to the shop in Sucuraj to buy a new pack of cards (carrying the old ones to make sure he got the right variety). Five minutes later a very drenched (read drowned rat) Luke walks in the door clutching a 20 Kuna note in one hand and a very wet pack of cards in the other declaring 'they don't have any cards'!! What happened we asked.........seems the inevitable happened and he slipped on the edge of the Harbour wall and took a dive. Poor kid...a little bruised but basically OK and lucky he did not crack his head on the way ... read more

Tonight is, sadly, my last night in Croatia. I'm taking an 8 hour bus ride to Zadar tomorrow to fly to London, where I'll be for a few days before heading home. This trip has gone way too fast! An update on the last few days before I reflect on the last few weeks: I was in Hvar before this, which is an island right off of Split. It was very beautiful and a lot of fun, but pretty resorty. 2 days was enough there, although I would definitely go back with friends. The weather has been soooo hot for the last week or so, I think every night in Split and Hvar I literally could not cool down unless I was in the water, it made it pretty difficult to sleep. Luckily there seems to ... read more

............................................ You all may have noticed that the volume of blog entries in the past few days has dropped down to nil... Travelblog crashed and was down for a couple of days, and a lot of data has been lost on their part. So until I do some fixing, most, if not all of my previous blog entries will be inaccessible, and a lot of the pictures will have to be reloaded... Not good times. ............................................ In any case, we left Dubrovnik, and headed to the airport to pick up our rental car. Getting in and speeding out of the airport parking lot felt amazing. We were no longer backpackers at the whim of train and bus schedules, we were free! Dave took over the driving responsibilties, and I used my compass, travel guides, and maps ... read more

Waking up the next day after my awesome night out in Split was bloody awful. Severely dehydrated, not having enough sleep and hungry but with absolutely no appetite, I still managed to drag myself out of bed for a wander around Split - in the 40 degree heat. The hostel owner who was so grumpy the night before must've felt sympathy for my self-inflicted plight and told me that I could leave my bags at the hostel for as long as I wanted and even recommended where I should go before I caught the bus down to Dubrovnik. Split's main attraction is Diocletian's Palace. Built as a strong, rectangular fortress, the palace measures 215m by 181m. I went up the landmark bell tower, which is a bit scary as there are places without railings on the ... read more

Well I am currently on Brac Island, in the Adriatic sea. Things are going well for Alex and I after many adventures. It has only been a few days since my last posting but it feels like it has been a long time. The bus from Kotor to Dubrovnik was awful. It was completely full and we ended up having to sit on the floor for half the trip. The bus got in nearly 4 hours late. We ended up taking a nap and deciding to stay an extra day in Dubrovnik to slow things down a bit. Dubrovnik is a cool city but way too touristy. It is still very beautiful though. The walls are incredible. The thing we liked the best though was swimming outside the gates, and jumping off the rocks outside the ... read more

We got into Dubrovnik much later than expected, sweaty, and tired. We tried our hardest to stay up for a bit and check it out, but after an hour of light touring, we were exhausted and went back to our Villa to nap, which ended up being several hours. We also discovered that it was really hot in Dubrovnik, even at night. The next day, we toured the city en force, along with hordes of other tourists. In fact, the place was tourist central. Unlike Kotor, it didn't seem like there was a single non-tourist related business set up. There were even people in medieval costumes parading up and down the city streets. As Dubrovnik was damaged in 1991 by the Yugoslavian army, it has been restored and the old walled city is in excellent condition. ... read more

Greetings from Split, Croatia. Just got in today after a very long day, actually 2 days of traveling. I left yesterday from Florence to go to Ljublijana (loob-li-ana) Slovenia. I went from Florence to Venice, where I had a few hours to kill after standing in the never ending, hot, line to make my reservation. I got some lunch at this restaurant that the girl working at the hostel I stayed at in Venice recommended. It was really cool, cafeteria style, big salads, and self-serve carafes of wine for 1.5 euro!! An idea that should catch on in the states! While I was sitting there, I realized that it seemed like everyone around me was carrying the same book. Now, I have been in a bubble in relation to news and pop culture, but I did ... read more

I was supposed to catch a ferry from Venice to Pula, but baulked when I saw the 74€ price tag. Instead, I took a train to the border town of Trieste with my Eurail pass, and then caught a bus to Pula for the princely sum of 12.50€ (my train pass doesn't work in Croatia). Italy doesn't actually border Croatia, so the bus had to go through Slovenia, famous for being mountainous, and it's easy to see why. I can't actually say that I've been to Slovenia though, as per my own rules, I never actually got off the bus and set foot in Slovenia, so I have not officially been there ;-) You could tell once you hit Croatia though, with red earth, old clay houses and scorching sun creating a classic Mediterranean landscape. In all honesty, I wasn't too keen on visiting Dubrovnik. Shame on me. How mistaken I was. The Old Town of Dubrovnik was an absolute eye opener and somewhere that we would both recommend visiting. We stayed in two different guest houses as we ended up staying another night longer than intended. Both were run by the most lovely people ever and the rooms were spotlessly clean. One even had air conditioning which was an absolute bonus as Croatia was feeling the effects of the heatwave that was causing deaths in some parts of Europe. The first elderly couple spoke minimal English and had us laughing non-stop. The old guy kept on chattering away to us in Croatian, repeating the same phrases over and over in the hope that we would understand him if he just ... read more
