After feeling to relaxed and comfortable on Vis, we were sad to leave our little bit of paradise. With backpacks firmly in place, we set off on the early Tuesday ferry to Hvar. Lonely Planet describes Hvar as 'fast becoming the choice for the swanky international jetsetting crowd' Our first impressions of Hvar, was a little more wanky than swanky. But then again, it might have been the heat, the heavy backpacks, the sudden appearance of chain stores like 'Lush', the ridiculous bus timetable, the cost of the left luggage facility and the hoards of tourists in Hvar town that was making me a bit less than chipper. Due to the bus timetable (bus leaves 10 minutes BEFORE the ferry arrives - next bus... 4 hours later) we spent the day looking around Hvar Town and ... read more

Well it has been a while since the last update and it feels like we have been busy but we are maybe just going a bit dozy in the meditteranean air cos I dont think we have done a lot. Swimming and eating seems to occupy lots of our days!!! The main adventure this week was a car trip to the town of Hvar, Stari Grad and Jelsa - Stipe lent us his car (an old beast Opel with no air-con or power steering)! So we set off early tuesday morning for the 70km trip that we thought would take about an hour.......2 hours of hair-raising journey on the narrowest road with absolutely no barriers as it winds 2000m up to the top of the island and then meanders along hairpin bends that plunge the ... read more

It seems everyone has something to say about Croatia so we waved goodbye the British summer and spent a few weeks backpacking around the Dalmation coast. After leaving the busy port area of Split we caught a bus and headed along the coast. Passing along the way, the most beautiful inlets of inky blue water. Outside the (barely) air conditioned bus, the temperature was rising and the sky was deep blue. We passed stunning little towns such as Trogir and Primosten and we were soon both wishing we were touring the country in our own car - we would have loved to have stopped and explored them all. Croatia was certainly getting the thumbs up so far. We arrived at the small town of Sibenik, not expecting much as it was only serving as a stop-over ... read more

• 7-8 Hvar Rise and shine, it is time to find a smaller non connected chunk of land off the coast of Croatia. Oh yeah, its 730am, my “landlady” woke me up because she needed to keys to the place back… I would have discussed my dissatisfaction, but I do not believe she knew many other words in English other than “key”. I stuck it out anyway regardless of her taking the keys and headed towards the docks around 900am. I have not been on the internet or spoken with Camille in many days, so I stopped in a shop and spoke with her, and wrote a couple emails expressing my “aliveness”. Step two ride the hour long ferry to Hvar and find somewhere to stay. The ferry wasn’t bad, with the exception to the lady ... read more

Many many photo pages on this one. Dan joined his family in Split where they sailed off together to Korcula, Dubrovnik, Mljet, Hvar, Trojir and many small islands inbetween, to land back into Split one week later. Lying on the back of a boat is the ideal way to get from place to place on the Dalmatian Coast. Attempted to upload a video - I dont think its working if you can find it. will try again ... read more

We were sad to leave Budapest, but Hvar was a great change from the craziness of traveling over the past few weeks. We flew from Budapest to Split, Croatia on Tuesday morning, then took a ferry to the island of Hvar. Walking into the Split airport (with one backpack filled with wine, as well as one obviously marked "fragile" duffel bag, we walked through customs as if we had nothing to declare. Awesome. As we walked off of the ferry, we were bombarded with people heckling us, asking if we needed a place to stay. Fortunately, we had already booked a room with a lovely Croatian woman named Ivanka Ivanovic (of course). She picked us up at the harbor, and immediately became our Croatian mother, telling us where to go, eat, shop, swim, etc. She ... read more

Hi all, Just a brief note to say that we have been doing the Islands off Croatia. Hvar and now in Korcula before heading to Dubrovnik today by ferry. Both islands and their towns are very special places. Of the two, I think I would have stayed longer in Korcula as it is a little, just a little mind you, less touristy than Hvar. Stunning scenery, history and food which is a little more ethnic Croatian than the Italian-German fare that Hvar seemed to thrive on. They had a rock concert in Hvar and then Korcula with local Croat band which is very popular over here. Sounded more like a cover band with songs from Pogues, The who etc etc, but the words changed to Croatian - very interesting. Apparently sea sponge tampons are all the ... read more
