In a pretty ridiculous coincidence, the one day we happened to go through Vienna just happened to be Mozarts 250th birthday. Which made the previous night quite unique. So today was our free day in Vienna, and it started off with the usual tour around the historical sites from our guide Helen. Once that was done we wandered down the main streets of Vienna, picking up various gifts - some mozart related - including a free mozart balloon. we then headed back to the giant palace thing where last nights dinner was held, and as there was an outdoors ice skating rink outside the front, we spent a while skating around. after that we met up with the rest of the group, and most of us went with the tour guide to a shnaps museum, where we ... read more

Australia day, and travelling to Austria. The day on the bus was highlighted by our first touch of snow for the trip, at one of our service stops. We arrived at the hotel at about 5pm to discover a massive pyramid - that was our hotel. Impressed enough by the exterior and massive lounge-bar in reception, me and Ben headed up to the rooms. Since we'd had a great string of hotel rooms, we let andy and justin choose their room first. they were quite happy with the one they walked into. So we headed on to the second room, to discover we got the mansion. a sofa, 2 armchairs, a little side desk, all in a separate room from a massive bedroom with ensuite, the bathroom itself containing 2 sinks and a bath - other ... read more

We had a relaxing day (pattern emerging here) of just walking around Vienna taking in the sights. We visited the Kunst Haus Wiens where they had a permanent Huntertwasser exhibition showcasing his art and some architectural models. This guy is big in Vienna - like a national hero to the environmentally-friendly of Vienna. The front of the Kunst Haus building is similar to the Kawakawa toilets he commissioned in his adopted New Zealand, so, you folks back home have not really missed anything and saved yourselves 9 euros. They must have the most expensive posters I have ever come across in a gift shop - 43 euros each! We went to see 'Die Fliedermaus' at the Vienna State Opera for our final night and had a most enjoyable and interesting night. The 'interesting' bit came from ... read more

We had our first proper sleep last night in weeks. The last month has been a blur of tying up loose ends at work, organising our move back to NZ, catching up with people and preparing for this trip. We have been anticipating leaving London for at least the last 6 months but it was still a struggle when the time came to say goodbye. Goodbye Burr Close! Goodbye Tower Bridge! Goodbye Lewisham! Goodbye Rambo the cat! Pat, Evelyn and the boys dashed us off to the airport for our flight to Vienna yesterday. We arrived in Vienna to a winter wonderland; everything is covered under a layer of snow. Walking around the beautiful buildings and parks in the swirling snow is surreal - like being in a snowglobe. It is freezing of course and we ... read more

Why didn't I move to Vienna? Oh, that's right. I don't speak German and couldn't do my job there if I tried. It's a beautiful city. Or at least I think it is when it's not buried in snow. :-) I left Paris late on the Orient Express. We were supposed to leave at 5:15pm and instead we left at 6pm. It was probably because of the huge snowstorm taking Europe by storm (no pun intended). I was booked into an all female, six person compartment. Fortunately, there were only two of us. There were supposed to be an additional four people get on, I think, in Strasbourg, France. When we boarded, all six berths were already set up as beds. The problem with this is that the berths aren't far enough apart to actually be ... read more

When I wrote my last update in London, just like everyone else in that city, I was rushing through as fast as I could, and I didn't slow down to proofread (or even save my draft properly!!) So apologies for the inappropriate grammer, poor prose, and lack of creativity. I was too busy cramming in the energy of London to worry about you guys at home! So, to clarify... when I referred to a week in the merde in France, I was only referencing the dog poop (and maybe some of the men who were shite.) The poop wasn't nearly as bad as I expected, and the men were twice as bad as I could have ever imagined (you don't need to hear all of the sordid details, but I was unexpectedly french kissed by a ... read more

I feel like, for my trip to Vienna, a different type of blog entry is in order. My time in Vienna was more of a continual wandering and observations rather than a particular story and most of what I have to say on the city is more in terms of the general effect of my experience there rather than the specific story of everywhere that I went and how. This is partly due to the fact that Vienna is an extremely expensive city and that to do just about anything requires quite a bit more money than I was willing to or able to spend. Consequently, I spent most of my time just wandering around the city. It is actually quite a wonderful city for doing so however. Vienna is just amazingly beautiful. During the days ... read more
