Hi everyone, It has been a while since we posted, sorry about that. Since we visited the wall, we went ahead and spent two more days in Berlin. It was quite cold, but absolutely a beautiful city. It's amazing how much history, both olden-days' and 20th century has happened in just a few streets. Lots of things we didn't even know until we got there - for example, there's one univ from which 30% of nobel prize winners had studied before WWII! Anand, who was initially looking forward to Vienna the most, also took one look around and agreed that it was an incredible place :). We also stayed with our cousin's family, which was perfect as it was really a home away from home, and we were able to catch up with them as well. ... read more

Vienna, Austria home to, among many other things, Mozart and chocolate. Infact on the plane here from Rome as well as the usual fare, coffee and water etc, they actually give you chocolate and its called Mozart Chocolate! Can a little piece of confectionary really be able to sum up an entire city so easily? The answer is maybe, actually. Everywhere you go in Vienna there is Mozart, its like the man is running for President or something. Chocolate on the other hand doesn't seem to be so omnipresent. The day we arrived here we were greeted with an Austria that looked exactly how you would expect it to look: Old with beautiful buildings and very overcast and drizzly. However the second day was what you would call, in the European sense, hot. Then back to ... read more

Hey guys, Well Austria didn't dissappoint for its fair shair of mountains music and picture perfect lakes. We went and saw the Veinna Boys Choir, as well as the Vienna Imperial Orchestra - An interesting selection of classical music, opera and ballet dancing. Other delights we enjoyed included some Hot Chocolate and Cake from Cafe Demmel's and some very good Schnitzel. Aside from this very fine food, Ben did have some stomach problems for a while due to some bad apple juice, but after a couple of hours the problems subsided..... With Vienna being similar in it's characteristics to Prague, we headed to Salzburg for some country air. We spent a few days tackling the local sights, as well as enjoying the Sound of Music movie and tour... Very cheesy, with a slice of cheese on ... read more

Melissa came to visit me...that makes two visitors! We spent ten days together, three of which in Vienna. I had to go for my exchange program's semiannual conference. It was great to see her and show her my new hometown. Vienna is way older than Berlin (it was a Roman colony) and far more charming and coherent. (Most cities are far more charming and coherent than the big B, though.) I showed her the four or five things I always do in Wien (Cafe Hawelka, Augustiner Church, Trzezewski? restaurant, Secession museum, KunstHausWien museum) and we went to the Albertina (finally open) for a Schiele retrospective. I got to present to the rest of the exchange program, and I think I did a good job. It was a partially successful attempt at making my subject edible to ... read more

This morning I woke up on the train at 6 AM. There were five other people in the room (about 7'x7'). One guy was German, two I think were African, and the other two were Americans. I got up and spent about a little over an hour watching the German countryside pass by. The train seemed to be going about 70 mph. Oh, and mom, the high-speed trains here do go 180 mph (300+ kph). Then I spent about 45 mins. talking to an American girl from the D.C. area. She was on Spring break and also staying over here an extra week. I switched trains in Munich to go to Vienna. In that car were three Germans (or Austrians, I'm not sure which) that were both smoking. So, I walked around the train a bit ... read more

So here we are in Austria. Home of Arnold 'what's-his-name?' and the pioneer of Red Bull. We landed at the airport midday on Friday, January 6th. After watching Method Man and his posse transfer to their flight for Berlin, we filed out of baggage claim and found Chris just walking in to pick us up. Chris is Holden's very good friend from high school in Seattle - Mercer Island to be precise. Chris and his wife, Katja, have lived in Vienna for just over year, where she works for the UN at the Internationational Atomic Energy Association(IAEA) and Chris is going to business school. From the outset of our trip we have intended to visit them. Holden was at their wedding in Bavaria in 2004, but the four of us briefly met in Seattle the past ... read more

Vienna is a great city. They have many statues and decorative buildings (clumped together), lots of people and a lively atmosphere. It kind of reminded me of the Disneyland of Europe. They have a lot of newer buildings made to look old (or they were at least in such good condition that they had to of been remolded. That was one of the big differences between Vienna and the countries that used to be communist. Though there were a lot more. First Non Communist Country in awhile: Vienna is the only City I have been to so far that did not experience Communism. After the war Austria became part of Western Europe and the Czech Republic part of Eastern Europe, even though Austria is directly below the Czech Republic. Vienna is very westernized. For example they ... read more

Today we got up very early because we wanted to have breakfast. i didn't really get a lot of sleep because it took me forever to get to sleep. For Breakfast, I had some yogurt, coffee, of course, and some bread, a slice with jam and one with butter! It was really good. i also had some kakao, which is cocoa and it tasted a lot like Swiss Miss and it really wasn't that chocolaty. I then went back to our room and quickly put on some clothes, as we had to be out of the room by 9am so that they could clean it. We went back to tube station, got some money out at the ATM and bought a 24 hour tube pass. Our first stop was to Karlplatz in downtown Vienna, but when ... read more
