Its been a wonderful week in Vienna; especially since the predicted rain did not happen. Sunny and pleasantly warm each day. So we were able to have our boat trip on the Danube after all. It was like being in a fairy land as the boat passed by ancient little towns with their red roofed buildings and castles perched high on hills. Some hightlights of Vienna: the buildings, statues, monuments etc are very grandiose. Emperor Franz Josef had the Roman city walls taken down and replaced with huge Roman-Greco style architecture. The museums are fabulous--it would require a long time to go through them all! We tried for one a day. I think my favourite was in the Hofburg Castle: the display of historical musical instruments--from ancient mouth instruments to stringed instruments to almost modern day ... read more

Visited Countries Map What a city!!! Doug here. Grab a beer and pull up a chair - I composed this one over the course of three days. I didn't realize how much I put in this one!! I'll keep them shorter in the future. All of this history around me - especially classical composers. I have been on a Mozart run and seeing as much of his preserved past as possible. Since Mozart died in poverty, there really isn't that much. Meanwhile, in addition to Mozart, Strauss and Beethoven are buried here. I have been walking alot around the city. Vienna is made up of 23 districts and I have wondered around mainly in districts 1 - 6. One just never knows what's just around the corner. I did, however, start using the tram, train, ... read more

We've had 2 wonderful and full days in Vienna. Although I was here before (in 1966!) I don't remember the scale of grandiose buildings and monuments. The city is arranged in concentric circles because the original city had a round fortified wall which Emperor Franz Joseph demolished and replaced with fabulous buildings, theatres, fountains, parks, and statues in the 19th century. Vienna is now rejuvenated as a centre of culture. I have to keep reminding myself to look up when walking to see all the ornamentation on the buildings. Domes and statues are everywhere. Yesterday we took advantage of the sunny day to walk in the gardens of Schonbrunn Palace, considered the "Versailles" of Austria. Our friend, Fritz, reminds us that, unlike the French Kings, the Austrian rulers did not bankrupt the country! In the 2 ... read more

We've safely arrived in Vienna after 2 long flights. The overseas flight went fine; then at Heathrow there was a problem with the refuelling. After sitting on the tarmac for an hour, BA decided to fly to Brussels to refuel, so in the end we arrived 3 hours late and quite hungry! Our friend, Joseph, was there to greet us and took us to the hotel his father had booked for us. It's in the centre, so we will be able to walk everywhere. I first met Fritz (Joseph's father) in 1966 in Switzerland, so it is great to reconnect with the family!) Before turning in, we had a typical Austrian meal--cabbage and potato salad and schnitzel and of course beer. Robin had a strudel for dessert. It's 4.30 in the morning as I write this, ... read more

I would like to welcome you to Vienna, the city I call home for the next year of my life as I try to improve my German, immerse myself in another history and culture, and study... marine biology. "But Austria is a landlocked country," you say, adding with a chuckle that I "should be studying in AustrALia!" I like Australia. I aspire to go there one day. And, you do have a valid point - the Austrians think coming here to study without an ocean is pretty hilarious too, but - surprise! - the UniWien has a small and dedicated department of Marine Biology. You can check it out yourself at http://www.univie.ac.at/marine-biology/ if you are interested in seeing the research that they are involved in. There are other distincly positive aspects to studying in Vienna as ... read more

On the way to Vienna from Budapest, I admit that I had a little cry at the thought of leaving David. It was all Michael Bolton's fault ... his song "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You?" came on and I couldn't help myself. Thankfully, David was asleep in another row of seats and didn't see me! We arrived in Vienna around 3:30 and went searching for a bank machine, then headed back to the hostel, Wombat's, for a little nap. I went down to the bar to tell Mel (a nice, 35-year-old Aussie woman) that I'd changed my mind about going to an opera with her (which we'd planned to do the night before in Budapest). She looked at me like I was an idiot, and I realized I was an idiot if I ... read more

'Eiskaffee' at Demel's in Vienna--after watching marching bands, we attended the 'Erntedankfest' (harvest festival) where sugar beet farmers erected large signs protesting the globalization that caused them to lose their livelihood to the Brazilians due to their lack of child labor laws. Displays of fruits and vegetables mounded and wreathed:cabbages, red and white, eggplant, carrots, onions and peppers; apples, plums, strawberries, blackberries and all sorts of berries we don't have, all in front of booths serving small meals, beer and coffee at long tables on the meadows behind the Hofburg, the imperial palace. Back in the smaller courtyard, the castle was just expelling the guests of a big society wedding. Remarkable, large brimmed hats in every color of the rainbow, Paris coutoure, men in morning coats kissing the hands of ladies shaded by the wide brims ... read more

Vienna was the second of our 2 "we don´t have a hotel yet" stops... and we probably ended up with one of the nicest hotels we´ve had so far and it was also one of the cheapest. :) Score!!! Our time in Vienna was different from our other stops because we took the days to do "kid" stuff. We started with a trip to Stephansdom (St. Stephan's Cathedral) which is the center of town and saw the Staatsoper (State Opera House), Keith had a lunch of Weiner Schnitzel and Gosser beer (I tried to have Apple Strudel there, but they said they were out!), then we headed over to the famous Sacher Cafe for a Sacher Torte (chocolate). After that the real fun began... We started our tour with a trip to the House of Music, ... read more

Boarded the train to Upper Austria, which takes about 2 hrs from Vienna. And what a great train ride that is. You pretty much ride the train on the banks of the Danube River - very lush and green. Our destination: Linz. The Ars Electronica Festival to be precice. This electronic arts festival is an institution in Linz and invited people from all over the globe to participate. Really cool and very unexpected in this otherwise sleepy town. The only cafe around is called Cafe Traxlmayer...so make sure you go there sit on the terrace and enjoy your coffee. ... read more

Saturday we took a day trip to Vienna, which was a blast! The day began with mass at the “Minorite Church” which was modeled after St. Stephen’s Cathedral and is one of the oldest and most artistic churches in Vienna. Once again I was in awe of the magnificent artwork. They had a mosaic of The Last Supper of Leonardo da Vinci made out of little tiles which was gorgeous! After mass we went to the Augustinerstr for lunch. They had amazing food and it was my first experience with venier sniztzel. We were really excited about it at first because we thought it was chicken but then we found out it wasn’t…I’m still not sure what venier snitzel (I have no idea how to spell that) is exactly but it was good so that’s all ... read more
