i got back in from vienna last night. on the whole, it was a very good trip. the train ride to austria was kind of rough. i requested a sleeper car on the way there, which is awkward, but i really wanted to sleep on the 14 hour ride over night. i guess the guy at termini misunderstood me, though, b/c i most certainly did not get a sleeper car. instead, i was in some little boxed in area with five other people. there was hardly any legroom at all, it was cold, and all around miserable. somehow i managed to get a few hours sleep, thankfully, but i was very happy to get off that train in vienna the next day. when i got to vienna i was a little nervous, to say the least, ... read more

Wow, I loved this city. I had my doubts about going; I honestly didn't have an initial attraction to the city and didn't understand why Chase was insistent about visiting Vienna. I thought I might as well go - how often would I be able to go to Vienna with someone who speaks excellent German? The whole time I was there, I was amazed at how wonderful everything was. First of all, it was worlds cheaper than Paris. We actually stayed in a hotel, and it was less expensive than all the hostels in Paris. The hotel even had a full kitchen. And the restaurants were affordable, too (another big change from Paris). The food was amazing - and not just the Austrian food. We also had Italian and Indian, and I was convinced to eat ... read more

okay, so i just returned for a little sojourn around the general vicinity. it was a lot of fun and stuff. kristin, mike and myself started in vienna. kristen left soon after, mike and i continued on to salzburg, then slovenia, then zagreb and split, mike split to prague from split, i continued on to dubrovnik (croatia), then to sarajevo (bosnia), belgrade (serbia and montenegro), budapest hungary, and back to good ol' prague. it was a lot of fun, lots of beautiful sights and people along the way. i think i'll do three separate installments of pics. starting here with vienna and salzburg. vienna was amazing, very clean, lots of big parks and monuments, everyone was very friendly and happy to talk to us. a huge contrast to prague, which was a nice way to start ... read more

I planned about a week and half or two weeks ago to spend my long weekend in Austria. I booked train reservations and hostels and gave anyone the option to join me. Originally a trip to Venice was scheduled this weekend but that got cancelled, so Sam decided to join me for the Vienna leg of the journey. Then on Wednesday Tricia and Megan bought tickets. Last minute, right? No. Ryan didn't buy his until Thursday afternoon. So, Thursday evening Megan and I run to Totis for train snacks and run to meet everyone at the Quinns. The 5 of us headed out to Termini and got on our train for Vienna. Tricia and Megan ended up in the same car and Samantha, Ryan and I each in different couchettes. I was with a nice older ... read more

We make reservations for a couchetta (bed on the train, after figuring out 10 minutes on the ticket office), just remember we were on a low budget travel so we reserve for the cheapest ones meaning 6 people sleeping on a 3x2 meter cabin what a shocking experience, fortunately by logic we took the superior beds, just to put another element on the story it was summer and a very hot summer, so six people on that cabin felt like hell, the first thing was move you're backpack to your bed, at least on the top were more room, on the cabin we met a very nice english couple, but c'mon the temperature was crazy, suddenly the first shock the driver pass for check the tickets growning some thing in german, only the german couple that ... read more

Well hello there! Sorry once again for the slight delay. Jane glad you are hooked up at last, just in time for our Vienna segment. We left Budapest and their random piles of rubbish behind us and took a scenic journey to Vienna. The first night we just ended up chillin' in the hostel bar which was cosy. It was a really friendly place though and we ended up meeting a couple of people, firstly Bob and American guy from Iowa- who weirdly has just walked into our hostel in Salzburg as im writing this! We were then joined by a couple of guys one from Canada and the other from Japan. Finally two girls from Birmingham joined us-it was weird because at around this point Dan's neck got considerably better?! We had a full day ... read more

Gruss Grot everyone, Sorry its been some time since my last entry...I have no excuse except that internet is expensive...lame, I know. So anyways, I last spoke about London, which to recap was absolutely fantastic. I saw the play at the Globe Theater, and the next day was spent with Marcelo (the guy i was staying with) where we toured Chelsea and met up with some of his friends who just so happened to be playing a jazz gig that night! There were 2 bands that played and they both were really cool, as were the people themselves. I felt comfortable with them right away, which they said was mutual and we had a great night which is always a nice way to finish off a city. And finished it was because the next morning I ... read more
