Wednesday, January 14,2009 Today I ventured on to the launcha for the first time. I thought I would head to Panajachel...but because the waters were so rough, I opted for going to San Marcos which was just a five minute boat ride away. The climb down to the dock was about 200 steps...all of various sizes...and not easy. There is a railing made of bamboo only part of the way down, so I walked down very carefully . I waited about 20 minutes for the launcha and when it arrived...I climbed on and wrenched my knee. I knew my right knee was not feeling great as I began the decent down to the water. San Marcos center is a maze of tiny little streets lined with little hotels and restaurants and lots of holistic therapy places ... read more

Hey people, Here are some pics of Nicaragua and Honduras for you. I´ll let you see for yourself... Life at Spirit Camp ´09 is going great. We´re about a month in now and I´ve been doing more study than I ever did at uni! We´re learning tarot, astrology and a whole bunch of other stuff based on the Qabalistic Tree of Life. There´s a one month and a three month course that you can do here. I did the Moon course (the one month course) last year and am doing the Sun course now. The last part of the Moon course is a week in silence and us Sunnies join in on that one. This time round it happened to land on my birthday! How amazing it is to spend your birthday in silence. No talking, ... read more

Monday, January 12th...(continued) The road up from San Marcos to my location at Pasaj-cap was mostly unearthed dirt and rock...making driving very difficult (and walking it not so great either)...but alas, the sign .....Pasaj-cap appeared and my sense of relief was visibly obvious! Once thru the gates, we were greeted by several of the worker's who helped bring all my luggage and groceries down to my apt. I could not have been more thrilled! It's perfect! Look at this view!!! ... read more

Monday, January 12, 2009 I was picked up by my driver, Freddy Luna, which I arranged thru Pierre, the Parisian man whom I am renting my apt from on Lake Atitlan.... at about 9:45 this morning. We headed to Guatemala City to a large inexpensive grocery store to stock up with provisions for my month stay. I bought more groceries than I probably needed, but all the fruits and veggies looked soooo delicious! We got back in the car at exactly noon, and headed for the lake. I had heard that the lake was a two and a half to three hour drive from GC, but that depends where you are going on the lake! It took us five hours exactly to my door. The drive was spectacular. Breathtaking and Heartbreaking, all at once. Freddy took ... read more

My adventure began, Saturday, January 10th at approximately 12:15 pm. Flying BOS to DFW and on to GUA, arriving fairly close to schedule, off by maybe one half hour due to some supposed late passenger arrival on the flight from DFW. Guatemala City from the air is an equisite dance of amber and teal green lights covering the entire city and it's surrounding areas. Not a single white light to be seen. Getting thru customs was a breeze and baggage claim not so much, but just to have all my bags arrive was worth the wait! I packed as light as I possibly could for this trip, and I am glad I did. I had one 26 inch suitcase, a toiletry bag, chock full (where did I think I was going?? This is not the glamour ... read more

Ok, so we´ve really fallen behind with this so we will have to cut the crap and just get to the point!!! San Marcos was lovely, very quiet and relaxing, we went for a drink in this bar by the lake at about 4pm and then a storm came so we got stuck there for a couple of hours, needless to say we were fairly well on by the time we left and weren´t too bothered about the rain! Nearly got lost on the way back to the room, we´re blaming the lack of light and not the alcohol on that!!! The following morning after I had talked Paul out of staying in San Marcos for a month to do a meditation and detox course we left for another village (or island as Pol seems to ... read more

On Sunday while still in San Pedro we decided to climb a Volcano on Sunday morning at 6am. We got out of bed at 5.30 and met the tour guide who was a Guatamalena dude with zero English and we with zero spainish other than "Olla". We headed off on our 6 hour hike. We stupidly thought it would be just a stroll in the hills but it was extreme hill walking. When we bought the ticket the previous day we were told that we would need sercurity in the mountains in the form of police to ward off bandits who lay in wait for unsupecting tourists in the highest parts of the mountain tops. We started off our climb which was firstly through the hills of the town before we got into the mountains. While ... read more

Lake Atitlan and San Marcos Hannh and I got away for the weekend. It took about 2 hours to get to the lake. What a beautiful place! When I got into my room ($6/night with a shared bath; the most expensive place is around $40/night), I noticed the light didn´t work. When I looked at the ceiling light, there was no light bulb. So, down to the desk I went to ask for a light bulb. Keep in mind that very few people here speak English, and, of course, neither did the woman at the desk. I told her there was no light in my room, and she giggled. I quickly realized that I had said in Spanish, "There is no light in my food." Well, "cuarto" (room) and "comida" (food) are close, aren´t they? Needless ... read more

We found another one of Guatemalas not so secret treasures, Lago Atitlan. As we arrived in our minívan we came over the hill to look down upon a large beautiful lake surrounded by volcanoes and much vegetation. Panajachel is the largest town around the lake and this is where we were dropped off. Although this was nice enough we had read about another place called San Marcos, a town on the other side of the lake where we had decided to base ourselves. We soon discovered there were 3 prices on boats around here and because we were neither locals nor long termers we forked over our tourist cash. San Marcos is a lovely little village with a small wooden jetty sticking out from the reeds growing on the lake shore. We had read that this ... read more
