YYYAAAYYYY!!! It's time for Ned to go on Vacation with a capital "V"! hastagvacation! Super excited, I feel like I haven't done a get down and dirty, hang with the locals on their mud floors, eat street meat, fresh fruit, end up with 'ahem' bathroom issues due to previously mentioned events; feel better and do it all over again! My last visit to the Central/South America continent (which is without question my fav) was in Dec 2010 when I did Chile, Argentina, and Easter Island. That was the trip that started this blog, truth be told, and I am beyond delighted to be here again, about to set foot on Spanish soil. My language skills may not be any better, but I will have a heap of fun trying!! Of course preparations for this trip were ... read more

Wczoraj dotarlem do Antigua. Dwa wulkany Agua i Fuego gorujace nad miastem dodaja niesamowitego uroku. Kiedys byla to stolica calej centroamerykanskiej kolonii hiszpanskiej. Az do roku 1773 kiedy to silne trzesienie ziemi - a w zasadzie cala seria trzesien ziemi - zniszczyla to miasto. Wtedy tez zapadla decyzja o opuszczeniu miasta i przeniesieniu stolicy do Guatemala City. Nie wszyscy sie jednak temu podporzadkowali i ci co zostali probowali odbudowywac miasto. Do dzisiaj miasto jest w bardzo duzym stopniu odbudowane, a jedynymi wiekszymi pozostalosciami po trzes... read more

We have just spent nearly two weeks in Antigua, where amongst other things we have been learning Spanish at the Spanish Academy Sevilla (SAS) School. Teaching Spanish in Antigua is big business, there are so many schools it is hard to know which one to pick. Of the eighty or so schools we narrowed our list down to 4 that were recommended in our rough guide; most of them offered pretty much the same things, one-to-one lessons, a personal syllabus, daily activities and accommodation. After an afternoon wandering the cobbled streets of Antigua visiting the schools we decided on SAS. It had good reviews and just felt right, classes were held in a purpose built courtyard and the staff all seemed very friendly. It turned out to be the right decision, our lessons were effective and ... read more

This morning we got ready and headed over to the main hotel to eat breakfast before we split up into two groups for our tour of Antigua. The tour was really interesting, we learned some pretty interesting facts about Antigua and got to see tons of cool sites including the main cathedral, an ex-nunnery –which is said to be haunted, and even went to a chocolate factory. At the chocolate factory we learned the facts about how they make chocolate and even got to taste test some! All of us bought some chocolate products as souvenirs before heading out again; it was a really hard choice to decide what to buy because they had all sorts of products ‘choclified’. We broke for lunch and Brandy, Megan, and I headed to Mono Loco to grab a quick ... read more

Today I let myself sleep in for a little bit longer and woke up at 5:30am to pack up all of my things; I got myself ready –skipping the possibly frigid but probably scalding hot shower and hung out in the living room/dining room asking Mama if she needed any help, and as usual she said no. I was getting my camera ready to take pictures of the house and some of outside when Mama gave me the sweetest gift ever; a traditional baby carrier and a gorgeous scarf. I felt so loved and was sad already that I had to say goodbye that I started to full on cry; I tried to hold it together but it just didn’t work. Once I pulled myself together Mama made breakfast and I took pictures. Alejandro and Isabel ... read more

After diving at the Belize Barrier Reef Bonnie and I went to Guatemala. Guatemala turned out to be one of the greatest countries I saw. Better than I had anticipated, to be honest. The trip started with getting drenched in the rain on the boat to Belize City. Also our bags got quite wet, what was a bit a problem as they didnt dry for 2-3 days...:-( We arrived in Flores, Lago Peten province, in the evening. I was completely exhausted and had a bad headache. But we had a wonderful dinner at a restaurant at the lakeshore. The next morning at 4 we got up again and went with a group to Tikal to watch the sunrise. Unfortunately just before sunrise there were clouds moving in. So we did not see the sun rise, but ... read more

Into second week in Antigua and have moved out of the tiny hotel room into a more spacious apartimento consisting of large room, bed one end, chairs, table tv! Wee kitchen and bathroom. This is major improvement. Am in small community and Olga in big house provides all meals, good news especially as I get to sit, eat and socialise with the others. And in socialising, last week shuttled (shuffled) and hiked up mountain to eco lodge complete with restaurant, bar, hammocks, sweat lodge, tree house everything for the discerning traveller in Guatemala. Steep path down from the top to the lodge and then back up but well worth it. I was actually looking across the summits of smokey vulcanos instead of observing them up through the clouds. Ride down on pickup, bumpety bump but fun ... read more

Also eine sehr gemütliche Umgebung.

Finally the long awaited moment in my travels had arrived. A friend from back home was coming over to visit and spend the following three weeks traveling through Guatemala, Belize and Mexico with me. Although I had managed to survive almost nine months without getting properly sick, I chose the day before Tian arrived to get a cold. After an early night, some moping around the hostel and a visit to the pharmacy to get the strongest over the counter meds that they were willing to give me (aka prescription meds back home) I manned up, jumped in the car with my driver for the night Reaoul and headed off to Guatemala city to collect Tian and her backpack that was almost as big as she is. During my time traveling I quickly discovered that there ... read more

After hearing stories about Guatemala City and the lack of things to do there I decided to head straight to Antigua in Guatemala rather than staying a night in the capital. A few hours after we crossed the border (and I had my first attempted border scam - unluckily for them this wasn't my first border crossing!) and arrived in Guatemala City. In order to get out to Antigua we needed to catch a taxi from the bus terminal to a public bus stop. The taxi driver at the bus stop told us that it was super dangerous for us to go to the public terminal and if he dropped us off that someone would come up behind us with a gun and rob us - clearly he was trying to play on our fears and ... read more
