After a lie in and a late breakfast we headed off to a museum Scott has been wanting to visit since we got here but have failed to find. We discovered why it was so hard to find today - because it's in the middle of a 5 star hotel and it's more of a national park than a museum! The Caso Santo Domingo is rated the number one thing to do in Antigua on TripAdvisor and it was an experience... In the first open part of the ruins there were destroyed tombs but in a glass case for all to see were a pair of human remains from 400 years ago. And human remains seemed to be a running theme throughout the tour which was rather unexpected and eerie to say the least. We descending ... read more

The 25th of July is not an average day in Antigua apparently. Today the entire town celebrated Saint James, all day, non - stop, everywhere. Music flooded the streets and thousands paraded through with different costumes and dances. Sitting in Central Park watching the locals enjoying the celebrations but also the peddlers trying to make some money and extremely young children shining shoes and selling cigarettes shows how polarised our societies are. We escaped the fiesta for a couple of hours on the coffee tour high up in the mountains. Did you know coffee starts off as a red fruit? Well we know everything about coffee now! And we have realised that coffee back home is not real coffee! While up there one of the volcanoes puffed out some smoke which you can sort of see ... read more

Buenos dias! What a beautiful place Antigua is. We started out bright and early this morning and had a traditional (interesting) breakfast (see picture) with coffee and we must say, the coffee back home is like dirty water compared to Guatemalan coffee, yum! Every corner we turn there is a landmark to be seen and we turned a lot of corners more than once thanks to Annie's map skills! It is quite similar to New Orleans only busier and more colourful. It was nice to sit and people watch in Central Park although the midday heat gradually sent us back to the hotel for a break from the blazing sun which has burnt Annie's shoulders. As you can see from the pictures we went to a chocolate museum where the tour was very different from what ... read more

E fractured her ankle. There was nothing dramatic or spectacular about it. We were on the edge of Guate, hitchhiking out, walking along the highway to find a better spot when I saw her suddenly double over and begin to cry. She said she heard a crack and my immediate thoughts turned towards her hip whilst my heart began racing; it wasn't until a minute or two later when she explained it was her ankle that I breathed a miniature sigh of relief. She had stepped on a stone and twisted her ankle. Quite severely though, clearly, as she is now laid up in Zona 3, Guate, with Couchsurfing host Alejandro. I am sat at a hostel in Antigua. We were leaving Guate for Honduras, hoping to reach the Carribean island of Utilla within a couple ... read more

Have you ever stood in the breeze up a hill and stared at the sky, those moments of Devine peace when you exhale pain and inhale forgiveness. Just 20 minutes out of Antigua town I stand, gazing at the full moon, Fuego volcano erupting in the back ground, Venus and Jupiter alining in the sky above us. The calm, the energy, it blew me away. Those once in a lifetime experiences are why I travel, there where I find my release. Never have I seen the earths core blowing out of an active volcano, I mean how many people actually experience these things. It makes you wonder suddenly, how varst and insane Mother Earth truly is. How beautiful, how unexplainable. Our inner emotions, our daily struggle peril in insignificance when the sky, the moon, the stars, ... read more

I am not going to lie, I predicted the last two weeks of this trip were not going to be our favorite stops and it is proving to be true with the exception of San Diego and Cabo San Lucas. Today’s port was super industrial although they had an attractive area at the pier for shopping. Many arts and crafts vendors were in residence and although I found their goods attractive, didn’t buy a thing. We have no room to bring anything else home so we will not be buying anything else from here on in. Saw some iguanas near the shore and other than that not much to do unless you travel 50 miles to see Antigua. The temperature today was in the nineties so we were happy to spend most of our time on ... read more

Antigua is the old capital of Guatemala. It is a pretty city around an hour away from Guatemala City with the vibe of southern Spain. It has cobbled little lanes and is surrounded by volcanoes- mainly being overlooked by volcan de Agua on the south side of the city. It is really tourist central for Guatemala but has definitely been one of my favourite cities of the trip so far. Antigua is one of those cites that you could wonder around for weeks and still managed to find something to do. It has a lots of old , ruined churches which have not been restored and more modern churches, cathedrals and buildings, some of which have been turned into hotels and restaurants. Along with this I found the Cerro du Cruz which is a cross on ... read more

Located inside of Filadelfia Coffee Estate - which is a large coffee planation as well as a factory with available tours, test tastings and a delicious restaurant to eat at- is another kind of adventure for those whom don't fear heights. The Canopy Tour's provide two options for that bucket list zip lining experience through the forest and/or between Canyons. You can sign up for the Forest Express which allows you to take upon seven different zip lines that gradually become longer and higher. The last one on this course option drops down a 40 foot line across the tree line - it was amazing! Or if you are more adventurous and want to experience a much longer and higher zip line thrill then the Canyon Express is perfect for you! This particular package that they ... read more

Holy week in Antigua, Guatemala is one of the most beautiful religious celebrations known in America. Not only has it's creation of luxurious carpets made up of colorful sawdust, flowers, and fruits become tradition for Antigua civilization during Semana Santa, "Easter Week", but it's religious grandiose homage to Jesus and his crusificition via Guatemalan artisans man made 'andas' (floats), statues and elegant robes proves that lent in Antigua, Guatemala leads to a true spiritual and cultural opportunity for one. In Guatemala, processions (or as they would say, procesiones) occur during Holy Week and Lent. During my stay in Antigua, Guatemala I was privileged enough to personally view Antigua's Catholic celebration commemorating Passion, Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Have I ever been one with strong faith and core beliefs when it comes to religion? No, not ... read more

We got to Antigua knowing full well that we were getting there in time for Semana Santa, 'Holy Week' or the week of Easter. Being a very catholic part of the country it was a very important week and there were many things going on. We booked our hostel late and would have to leave Thursday, before all the big festivities since everyone (maybe their dog, and cats, and rats, and spiders too) would be coming to celebrate in the big city and there was no room in the inn. With little time in town we knew we should get a move on using the first day to orient ourselves. That night we had a chance to witness a procession, which is like a parade where the fraternity that is in charge of a certain saint ... read more
